SIMON BEGGS TO COACH KINGSTON IN 2007
Simon has played at Hatherleigh in the past five seasons and was involved in a Premiership there as coach. Before his time in the Mid South East he won the Virgo and Mail Medals at Kingston in 1999 and 2000.

BRAD RICHARDSON TO COACH THE DEMONS IN 2007

IT’s going to be hard to top Naracoorte Football Club’s 2006 A grade premiership, but the club’s newly-appointed senior coach Brad Richardson is determined to have a crack. The 32-year-old’s appointment was announced by the club at its annual general meeting on November 29.
Appointed as a non-playing coach at this stage, Richardson succeeds Dean Woosnam, who is moving to Queensland for work. Woosnam played a pivotal role in securing the Demons’ first A grade flag in the Kowree-Naracoorte Tatiara Football League – the club last having tasted success back in 1992 in the then Kowree-Naracoorte Football League.
Richardson comes to Naracoorte from nearby Padthaway, where he coached the A grade for three years. His football career began in Adelaide, where he played under 17s and under 19s for West Adelaide then began an 11-year stint with PHOS Camden in the Amateurs.
He captained the club’s A grade for two years in 2000-01 and played in its 2002 premiership team, which he says are highlights of his career to date. However the period with the Phantoms also records his biggest disappointment. He missed playing in the 2000 premiership side due to injury. A backman in his playing days, Richardson says he is very excited about the “big challenge” he has been given to coach the Demons.
He’s also looking at it extremely realistically. When asked about his aspirations for the season ahead, he simply says: “To maintain the level of success the club has enjoyed over the last couple of years.”
Richardson, or “Richo” as he is known, says the club’s young players are obviously its key and he’s looking forward to more colts getting a run with the seniors.
Pre-season training starts on December 7 at 6pm at the club. Sessions will also be held on December 14 and 21 before Christmas, before training kicks off in earnest mid-January.
Richardson, who has worked in Mini Jumbuk’s administration/accounting department since coming to the SE, is single and enjoys “sports in general”, including having a hit of golf.

He met many club players, supporters and sponsors at its Christmas family day at the Demon Inn on December 3 and says he is looking forward to seeing them all getting right behind the Demons again in 2007. Any interested players should contact Richardson on 0438502055.

In what was a tight and hard fought KNTFL Grand Final, Naracoorte won its first A Grade premiership in 14 seasons, defeating Keith
by 12 points at Bordertown. Trailing by eight points at the 22 minute mark in the final quarter, the Demons, whose Finals campaign
has begun in the Elimination Final, rallied and finished the better, kicking the last three goals of the game to clinch the flag in what
was a dream come true for Coach Dean Woosnam in his final game for the club, after four seasons in charge.
Vice Captain Nathan Smith triggered the final onslaught with possibly the best goal he will have ever kicked in his life, a miracle of a
left foot snap in front of the packed hill in the left forward pocket. The elusive Greg Phillips dramatically goaled from a free kick a minute
later to put the Demons in front by four points and after a couple more behinds, Sam Logan took a terrific mark with seconds left,
25 metres out dead in front. As he completed the grab, he raised the ball in triumph, the first time any player on either side could
be sure of victory. As Logan ran in to kick what proved to be the final goal of the game, the siren went which signalled scenes of
pandemonium from Naracoorte fans, most of whom had waited over a decade for A Grade Premiership success.
Smith, Phillips and Logan were amongst many heroes on both sides in what turned out be a classic encounter. Mitch Hartree was
awarded best on ground honours with a four goal effort, Luke Munro was tireless, while Jordan Hampton, who struggled a fraction
early did well in defence. The Demons couldn’t have won without the efforts of veteran Jeff Hunter, while little Matt Gill was also
effective in an around the packs.
Despite some injuries during the day, Keith couldn’t consider themselves unlucky at all, as they had their chances to win the
match. Nick Hunt was one their best, along with forward Carl Semmler, Jason Smith and Jason Snajdar (four goals) who was their
best key forward on the day.
In warm conditions, Keith entered the field immediately after the conclusion of the B Grade Grand Final, and because of the late
start were actually on the ground for 20 minutes before the opening bounce. Whether this had an effect on them later in the game
is debatable, but it was noticeable that Naracoorte only entered the arena, just before the start, perhaps to avoid the warm conditions.
After a scrappy beginning, Keith appeared to settle the better with Jim West proving a early handful for Hampton. The Crows lost
Andrew Willis to injury early in the piece while their Mail Medalist Hamish Tamlin copped a knock early and this appeared to restrict
him in the first half. With Dixon starting back for Naracoorte they appeared a little sluggish in the midfield, but after 12 minutes, the
Demons’ Hartree goaled after a turnover from a poor kickout by Keith. Three minutes later at the other end, West found Snajdar
who replied in fine style. For the rest of the term it was goal for goal with Makin slotting one through for the Crows, while Hartree
was on fire notching his second to tie it up at 2.3 apiece. West continued to lead out strongly and added a six pointer, while Brighton
after a quick lead and mark, caught Keith napping with a quick layoff by hand to Woosnam who tied things away for the third time.
A trivial 50 metre penalty gave Barnett a goal which saw the Demons hit the front briefly, before a bad turnover by Dixon allowed
Semmler to take advantage and at quarter time things were locked away at 4.3 apiece. In the opening ten minutes of the second
quarter, Keith took control with goals to Semmler and Snajdar, enabling them to skip out to a 14 point lead. At the 13 minute mark,
the diminutive Phillips drew a free from right in front for a much needed Naracoorte major and a few minutes later he had the chance
to add another six pointer, but missed badly after receiving a nice pass from Hunter. A silly free was given away in the back pocket
by the Demons Brighton, and Snajdar most the most of it at the other end in what was effectively a two goal turn around. Fortunately
Hartree was able to reply quickly, gaining possession of the ball after his Keith opponent was the victim of an unkind bounce on the
outer side.
Naracoorte’s Sam Logan, who had been having a dirty day to this point, started to come into the game and after an intelligent tap to
Smith which result in a behind, he had his own chance to put the Demons back in front but missed. A clearly inconvienced Tamlin
headed for the Keith rooms just before the main break to get treatment and when the half time siren sounded, Keith had the lead by
four points. The main question for Naracoorte fans was, would their 2.6 in the second quarter prove costly, as their 3.7 did in the third
quarter in the 2005 Grand Final?
The story from the respective teams rooms during the break couldn’t have been more different, with the Demons cool and calm,
while Crows coach Todd Butler was more than animated in his half time address to his players. Keith’s Jim West was a notable
absentee when the ball was bounced to start the second half, while Tim Hilton left the ground early in the term after appearing to
have damaged his knee. It didn’t immediately affect the Crows output as Tamlin goaled at the five minute mark to give Keith a 11
point advantage. Smith goaled five minutes later to give them their biggest lead of the day (17 points) and one sensed they might
be running away with the game. Phillips missed a snap on goal for Naracoorte but fortunately for them, Dixon made up for his earlier
miss in the term to goal, bringing the margin back to five points halfway through the quarter.
Todd McShane’s goal at the 20 minute mark stretched the lead again for Keith, while at the other end, Logan finally got going, kicking
his first with his fourth shot at the sticks. Just before the three quarter time siren Hunter eked out a free, the resultant possession off
loaded to Hartree who kicked his fourth, narrowing the gap to 7 points at the final break.
With the shadows lengthening, the Demons took first blood after two minutes of the final term with a goal to Logan and Phillips was
rewarded for a good tackle to put Naracoorte in front for the first time since the opening quarter. The crowd had come to life as they
sensed things were heading the Demons way, but the momentum quickly changed with Keith to dominate the next fifteen minutes.
West sprayed a shot and at the ten minute mark Snajdar coolly slotted through his fourth goal to make it a one point ball game.
West missed again to level proceedings as Keith looked as though they were going to finish the fitter and stronger. Mid way
through the term, Naracoorte coach Woosnam went from the forward pocket to defence in a bid to steady his team, but that plan
went awry when he dropped a mark and Jason Smith capitalized to give the Crows a seven point lead at the 17 minute mark.
Tamlin showed his class during this period gaining important touches as his team had a sniff of victory, but after looking out on
their feet the Demons dug deep and steeled themselves for one last effort.
Nathan Smith’s incredible snap out of nothing gave was the trigger for the final thrust by Naracoorte and calm finishing by Phillips
and Logan sealed the issue, the exuberant full forward’s final mark taken in triumphant style as shadows completely covered the
Bordertown Oval. In what was a fitting end to the 2006 season, umpires Martin, Miels and Winter officiated very well in what had
been a marvelous contest.

It had been a dramatic day for all concerned, after the siren an emotional coach Woosnam hugged and cried on everyone in sight,
including his parents who had made the trip down from Mildura for the match. It was a great triumph for “Woosie” and his Demons,
they had won their last four Home and Away matches and clinched four finals in a row to take the flag, after struggling somewhat in
the early part of the season.

Obviously devastated, the Keith hierachy to their credit were gracious in defeat, coach Butler and captain Damien Smart offering
their warm congratulations in the Demons rooms after the game. Meantime Naracoorte isn’t resting on its laurels, having advertised
for a playing coach for 2007 within hours of the final siren.

Round Nine - Saturday June 24, 2006

DEMONS BREAK UNBEATEN RUN OF LUCINDALE by countryfooty.com.au Editor - Lawrie Colliver
In what ended up being the Match of the Round, Naracoorte triumphed by four points, over a fast finishing Lucindale. With over
six first choice players out, it was Naracoorte best win of the year, handing the reigning Premier its first defeat of the season.
The key to the Demons victory was their efforts in the second term where they added 8.4 to 1.2, with wingman Jamie Dixon clearly
best on ground, kicking six goals, four of which came in the second quarter. Nathan Smith also had a fine day, along with Michael
Brighton and Rohan Smith.
Under grey skies, Lucindale won the toss and elected to kick with a slight breeze. Some of the early match-ups included, Hood on
McDowell, Hampton with Fiegert and Woosnam v Smith. After a tight opening five minutes, Fisher and Smith goaled for the ‘Roos
and it looked as though the reigning Premiers were on their way. From there, the Demons on-ball brigade moved into top gear with
Phillips, thanks to free kick, goaling to put the homeside on the board. McDowell passed to Fiegert for a quick reply, making it 3.0 to
1.1 in favour of Lucindale. Sam Logan then thrilled the good crowd, taking a hanger deep in the left forward pocket, after which he
goaled with a superb “Banana kick”. Donnelly then snaped another to tie it away at the 24 minute mark.

Quarter Time: Naracoorte 3.3 (21) to Lucindale 3.2 (20)
In the second quarter, the Demons came out full of run, with Logan kicking his second, while Dixon, who had a massive influence
in this term, kicked a terrific goal on the run.  Donnelly goaled on the left for the Demons 6th and when
Dixon added another, Naracoorte
suddenly had a 26 point lead. There was no let-up from the Demons, as Logan took a great mark in the goal square to pinch his third,
then thanks to great team play which started from half back, Munro kicked a goal, Naracoorte’s 7th unanswered, which made it 9.4 to 3.3
after the 19 minute mark. The Demon’s mid-field was on fire and despite a goal to Lucindale’s Fiegert,
Dixon
kicked a further two to give
Naracoorte a 45 point lead at half time

Half Time: Naracoorte 11.7 (73) to Lucindale 4.4 (28)
As expected, the reigning Premiers came out hard in third term, but could only manage a succession of behinds, with Phil Smith missing
a couple of golden opportunities to goal. He was having a great duel with Demons coach Woosnam, and after the Demons weathered
the early storm, they put on another three goals on the trot, including a great snap by
Dixon who kicked his fifth. This put the lead at
60 points and to Lucindale’s credit they kept at it, with McDowell kicking a much needed goal. Cains kicked his teams 6th thanks to a
soft 50 metre penalty and the 24 minute mark, Smith finally kicked his second to bring the margin back to 39 points at the last change.

Three Quarter Time: Naracoorte 14.10 (94) to Lucindale 7.13 (55)
The opening seconds of the final term saw Rohan Smith take a courageous mark, but the resultant turnover luckily didn’t prove costly
as Fiegert missed from just 30 metres out. With Lucindale still full of run, the finals like intensity was starting to show on Naracoorte,
who were starting to flag. Smith goaled at the four minute mark from the right forward pocket and after dominating the play goaled
again after 11 minutes, thanks to a mark from Fisher – the gap now just 24 points. Fisher had another chance to goal shortly after but
missed and thankfully for a tired homeside, Dixon slotted one off the ground (his 6th) in the goal square to give Naracoorte a 29 point
lead and some much needed breathing space.
At the 20 minute mark, Fisher made up for his earlier miss, kicking a quick reply and then Fiegert let a chance go begging, kicking a
behind which drew Bronx cheers from the  home crowd gathered in front of clubhouse bar. Despite the missed opportunities, Lucindale
was all over Naracoorte, with Fisher goaling from the goal square to kick his 4th and then elusive play by Cains saw another one go through.
At the 29 minute mark, McDowell took a mark and received a fifty to bring the margin to just four points, with two minutes left.
From the centre bounce, Naracoorte managed to hold the ball up and when the siren went after 31:23, it was a relieved home side who had
given Lucindale their first taste of defeat for 2006.

In the top of the table clash, Lucindale proved too good for Border Districts by 55 points, Phil Smith on fire kicking eight - henow has
