Westies make it 5 in a Row……….by a special correspondent
Western United won their 5th straight Far West premiership in a sensational display of fast attacking football to defeat the Blues by 68 points. Westies went into the match as favorites having only lost two games in the minor round and they defeated Blues by 15 points in the 2nd Semi Final also their finals experience is not to be underestimated.
A big crowd was on hand to witness the match played in very warm temperatures at Ceduna Oval. It was always going to be survival of the fittest and Westies benefited from the weeks break and finished the game full of run.
Blues got away to a great start kicking the first two goals of the game, Westies settled and replied and had multiple chances but couldn’t convert. It was then goal for goal and Westies managed to grab the lead for the first time in the match as kick from Milton Chandler bounced through for a goal as the siren sounded.
QUARTER TIME: Westies 5-6 lead the Blues 5-2
The second quarter opened with Blues having the ball in their forward lines early and couldn’t only manage a couple of behinds. Westies then went on a scoring burst which turned the game in their favor and won them the match. Westies kicked five unanswered goals in ten minutes in which the ball hardly touched a Blues player’s hand, some of the passages of play were outstanding and it was champagne football by Westies. Late in the quarter Blues hit back with two goals but looking at the body language of the players the damage had been done.
HALF TIME: Westies 11-7 lead the Blues 7-7
Blues really needed to come out and put scoreboard pressure on in the third to have any chance of stopping Westies but in the ‘premiership’ quarter Westies kicked five goals to two and had done enough to secure their fifth straight premiership. The pace and skill and great play from Westies was great to watch. Blues by this stage of the match looked a spent force with many players struggling.
THREE QUARTER TIME: Westies 16-13 lead the Blues 9-9
The last quarter saw Westies kick seven goals and the Blues four, with the game being played in warm conditions many players were starting to tire but it didn’t stop Westies whose domination of the match continued and they deserved the win.
Best on ground went to Westies Locky Brown who kicked four goals and set up many Westies attacks. Other best players for Westies were Rohan Scott, Jarrad Murphy, Milton Chandler kicked 6 goals and John Veerhuis 4. Blues best players were David Wright, Mark Mozol and Brendon Kloeden who kicked 3 goals.
