COBDOGLA'S SWEET REVENGE Match Report from Nick Kossatch
COBDOGLA broke their eight year premiership drought when they convincingly disposed of Paringa by 56 points at East Murray on Saturday.
The Swans failed to capitalize on their wind-assisted first quarter and the Eagle's defence was superbly marshalled by rugged centre half back Steve Renfrey. He repelled Paringa's forward entries repeatedly with sweeping handballs and telling marks and thrashed his opponent, Howard Duthie Medallist Todd Rivers.
John Vagg booted the game's first major after taking a screamer in the goal square. The Eagles' focus was intense from the start with their tackling a feature with Grantley Treloar, at fullback, doing the job on Simon Sumner but the classy forward was involved in Paringa's first when Lenny Gadaleta goaled from a free kick.
2006 Centurian goal kicker, Darrell Tibrook, booted another crucial into-the-wind goal assisted by Vagg who took on Jason Rover in a one-on-one duel for the ball in the centre of the ground.
Some impressive ball movement involving the Swan's Arrod Westley, Andrew Lloyd and Rivers culminated with Simon Hucks goaling which levelled the scores going into quarter time. Eagles coach Rod Hankin said, "Be accountable and take them on in the second quarter."
They drew first blood in the second quarter when a Paringa defensive error had Darren Starkey goaling. Paringa had big men in Jason Rover and Rivers in defence - a tactic which held Cobdogla to a three goal wind aided second term.
The Eagles did the one-percenters more and showed more risk-taking. Speedster Damian Heinicke, wearing fluorescent coloured boots, kicked a team lifting 60-metre major that gave his team a 14 point buffer. He was involved moments later in an example of 'one percenter play'. A goal square contest by Tilbrook resulted in Matthew Golding using his strength to goal from the scrimmage. Luke Hefford also began to exert his influence with his pace and vital possessions.
A Sumner goal against the trend of play, after Treloar overran the ball, pegged Paringa's deficit to 14 points at half time. They lifted in the third stanza via the outstanding rucking effort of Nathan Rover along with wingmen Scott Nagel and Simon Hucks. Sumner booted his trademark freakish goal from the boundary after a Cobdogla fullback kick-out landed out-on-the-full. The tempo of the game escalated but through the wonderful defensive efforts of Renfrey, first with a smother on Westley and secondly, his slick handball resulted with the helmeted Golding goaling from a mark Cobdogla re-affirmed their dominance late in the championship term with a 17 point lead and facing a wind-favoured last stanza.
Paringa coach Brett Backwell vented his anger with a good old fashioned spray. "I have asked us to be tough all day and not be soft. If it wasn't for Nate Rover the game would be over." He pleaded further, "Where is the playing as if it's the last game of the year? We have so much support to get us over the line if we're prepared to work. Let's show the crowd how much we want to win."
Paringa's task was made tougher when Vagg goaled his second after Swan captain John Clohesy overcommitted defensively. Sumner then showed frustration after a kicking in danger decision against him and with the game still to be decided Sumner was sent off for 10 minutes.
This proved the spur for Cobdogla as they took complete control piling on a further six goals. Renfrey, after a brief spell on the bench, was moved forward and the star marked and goaled to fittingly seal the premiership for the Eagles. Three more majors to Jim Wegener, Hefford and Starkey preluded wild celebrations minutes later for the first time since 1999.
MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT: There were many, particularly for Cobdogla. Damian Heinicke's second quarter 60-metre goal was brilliant and gave his side a 14 point lead. One also cannot forget Steve Renfrey's defensive heroics when the game was still at its' hottest during the first half.
TURNING POINT: Paringa's Simon Sumner being sent off for 10 minutes early in the last stanza after his kicking in danger indiscretion. The Eagles swooped thereafter rattling on six goals. Tilbrook's contest in the second stanza resulted in a Golding goal was a 'secondary turning point'.
BEST ON GROUND: Grantley Treloar. A brilliant fullback's game and he was simply flawless as he blanketed the dangerous Sumner. He was at him every step of the way and also used his pace to run off the Paringa wizard. Treloar's effort, no doubt, was a major contributor to the Grand Final's turning point.

TIGERS MAUL ROOSTERS IN GRAND SHOCK AT CEDUNA Monday August 28, 2006
by a Special Correspondent
The Western United Tigers won their fourth straight Far West Football League flag with a stunning upset over favourites
Koonibba in Ceduna on Saturday.
In a stunning boilover it was the Tigers who ravaged their rivals in a performance that stunned a huge crowd at the
Many expected the Koonibba Roosters to thrash the Tigers following their 119 point demolition of them in their recent
Second Semi Final clash.
But in a powerful performance it was Westies who came out on top - thumping their rivals by 63 points.
Westies, led by record breaking captain Todd Warmington, booted 20.6 (126) to Koonibba's 9.9 (63).
Warmington, who kicked two goals, was judged the best on ground in the Grand Final rounding out a year to remember
for the 20-year-old.
Last Saturday night he scored the most emphatic Mail Medal win the League had ever seen with 54 votes.
Warmington missed one game through injury and failed to poll in the best three players on just one occasion in 2006.
Rohan Scott, who tied for second place in the Medal, was among the best players for Westies in Saturday's big match
along with the evergreen Far West champion Milton Chandler.
Chandler kicked six goals for the Penong based side in a grand performance.
Warrior, Betts, Duckford and Miller were the best for the Roosters. Saunders booted three majors for the runners-up.
While the Tigers were outstanding, undisciplined play from the Roosters proved costly. A number of goals from the
Tigers were kicked after 50 metre penalties.
The Westies A Grade footy team is coached by local teacher Craig Irvine who said his team had bounced back from
their semi-final loss in great fashion.
They booked their place in the big one with a 92 point win over Blues after an eleven foal haul for Chandler.
Irvine said a number of Westies' best players were out of the team in the second-semi loss.
"I thought if we could get a good start then we'd have a great chance (of winning)."
It was a big day for the Western United Tigers. They also won the A and B Grade netball titles.
Milton Chandler's wife Tracey was the best on court in the big netball game of the day where the Tigers comfortably
beat the Blues.
The celebrations throughout the region for the Westies supporters is expected to continue for many days!
