SHIMMIN WAYNE HUTCHINSON TAKES A LOOK AT THIS WEEKS GAMES Balaklava has sent shockwaves through the Adelaide Plains, raising its hand as a real premiership threat with an impressive five goal win over Hummocks-Watchmen. The Eagles, who won their first four matches and looked destined for an easy top two finish, have now dropped their last two to be clinging to second, only by percentage. The Peckers are now very much a realistic threat as they dealt with the Eagles with minimum fuss to join their counterparts in equal second. It was a much better effort than their round five encounter with league leaders Mallala when they could only muster a measly 39 points for the entire game. Balaklava led at every change and was led by a sensational solo performance from Jonathon Brice who finished with 9 goals for the game. Also terrific was Kane Ruiz whist for the Eagles David Barnes was the stand-out. Hummocks Watchmen only have the one game before the bye against winless United in a fortnight. They’ll be desperate to get back on the board with a win and should expect to go into the break with a solid 5-2 record, a result I’m sure they would’ve taken at the start of the year. The Roosters were led by Paul Christofis who also bagged nine. There were five multiple goal kickers in their 25 goal day out. The Roosters take on the Rams next week in a game that could well decide who gets that elusive fourth spot just before the break. The Rams who once again were led by a Brendan Niklaus bag (this time he could only manage 8) have a game extra on Two Wells, taking on Hamley Bridge in the last game. This should be enough to see them in fourth place at the break. The only thing that remains to be seen is whether they will be two games clear or in by percentage only. Having said that if Hamley Bridge could repeat their heroics from round five they could also be in the mix for the four. United seems to be a long shot, even at this early stage as they will probably find themselves four games out of with only half a season to make up the ground. Round 7 - May 22, 2010

MCLEAN Round 6 report from Wayne Hutchinson A one point win has seen Mallala go one game clear at the top for the first time since last season. It was expected that the Magpies and Eagles would play out a thriller and that they certainly did. Both sides proved that they are the real deal as they played out an epic contest which never saw one team exert any dominance over the other. Whilst Mallala were very pleased with their win it would be hard to deny that they could just as easily have been on the other end. A draw would have been an appropriate result for these two teams which seem at this point in time to be head and shoulders above the rest of the competition. The Magpies named Captain Jason Earl best with Vice-Captain Brad Hardie as second. This seemed appropriate as it was the experienced players who held their nerve in the dying stages and ensured they came away with the points. Tim Cawrse was also excellent and Brad Montgomery’s five goals were telling in a tight contest. The Eagles were led by Shaun Light who is fast reasserting himself as the number one big man in the league. David Barnes was also excellent as was Nathan Barnes who chipped in with three. Hummocks-Watchmen will get their chance to even the score when they meet again in round 13. For those of you eagerly awaiting the next instalment it’s a long two months away. Elsewhere Balaklava was too strong for Virginia, coming away with a seven goal win. Young Todd McPharlin was best on ground with four goals. The Peckers are now one game clear of the Rams in third spot. Two Wells also notched up an important win over United who are now alone at the foot of the table. The 46 point win keeps the Roosters very much in finals contention. This week will reveal more in to which teams will shape the finals with the Eagles hosting the Peckers, the Roosters taking on the Bombers and the Tigers travelling to play the Rams. MILLS HAMLEY BRIDGE GRAB FIRST WIN more on Round 5 with Wayne Hutchinson Hamley Bridge has recorded their first win in nearly two years, downing United by a massive 51 points at home. The Bombers, who before Saturday hadn’t belted out the club song in well over twenty games, seemed destined to go under yet again as they found themselves trailing the winless Tigers by 28 points at quarter time. Peter Burgoyne was running rampant on his way to kicking seven for the game and perhaps nobody but the Hamley Bridge players themselves could expect what was to come; a Bombers onslaught. They had an unbelievable 16 scoring shots in the second quarter alone and had they not been so wasteful and the Tigers so accurate the game could’ve unbelievably been out of reach for United. As it was they suddenly found themselves five points adrift to a team which could sense its first win since 2008. Another six goal term by the Bombers saw the three quarter time margin expand to 31 points but there would be no more amazing comebacks in this game. Six more in the last sealed the deal, an emphatic win - a 79 point turnaround after quarter time the cherry on top. Young Stuart Gregory is having an outstanding season and was named best for the winners. Craig Allen was also exceptional as was Justin Schahinger who bagged four. The Tigers who now find themselves at the bottom of the ladder, despite being competitive in all of their games, were once again led by quality footballer Simon Schulz. In other games both Mallala and Hummocks-Watchmen recorded their fourth straight wins of the season, defeating Balaklava and Two Wells respectively. The two teams are the standouts of the competition and finally meet this Saturday in the game of the season to date. The Eagles play with flair and consistently find multiple avenues to goal. Big man Shaun Light gives their quality midfield first look and when up and running they are a highly potent and well drilled outfit. Conversely the Magpies have made winning a habit in recent times and like all good teams get the job done week in, week out with minimal fuss. They have a remarkable ability to find an extra gear when troubled and are brilliantly led by the experienced Christian Rimmer. Despite being 4-0 one can’t help but feel the sleeping giant is yet to be awoken. It seems the League has been waiting for this clash of the titans and all eyes will be on Mallala oval to see who draws first blood in what is already looking to be the battle for the 2010 flag. Just two weeks after bagging nine away to Two Wells, Niklaus went one better as the Rams belted a winless Hamley Bridge to the tune of 59 points. Despite the result, the Bombers had the early running and actually led five goals to four at quarter time. Unfortunately this was as good as it got as the Rams slammed on 18 goals to eight in the last three quarters. Troy Wilkey was named best for the third time this season and is shaping as one of the favourites for the Plains Producer Medal. Also prominent were Anthony Seccafien and Billy Nikou who also bagged four. Although they are now 0-3 and at the foot of the table it’s not all doom and gloom for the Bombers who found ways to score consistently throughout the day, kicking a season high 89 points. Elsewhere Mallala joined the Eagles on three wins, disposing of United by 52 points at home. The Magpies who are yet to lose a game this set up the win with a blistering seven goal to one opening before relaxing and going goal for goal with the Tigers for the rest of the day. Mallala seemed to play within themselves and are looking very ominous. They have won their games with minimum fuss and are yet to flex their collective muscle. Ryan Montgomerie was again terrific as was Jon Clarke and Christian Rimmer who has also started the season with a bang. Daniel Feely and John Southern led the scoring front, both bagging three. For the winless Tigers captain Simon Schulz was best on for the second week in a row and was well supported by young Heath Pym William Banton and James Rundle with his three goals. In the only other game Two Wells notched up their first win with a solid display at home against a wasteful Balaklava. Despite having only one less shot than the Roosters the Peckers went down by sixteen points, rueing their inefficiency in front of goal which saw them kick 9.16. That being said, the Roosters were very impressive and showed great heart and character to turn a seven point three quarter time deficit into a comfortable three goal win. Although it is their only win for the season they have had a tough run early and should now string together a few wins in the last half of the round. Conversely the Peckers missed a golden opportunity to join the Eagles and Magpies at the top of the table and are now locked back in battle in the middle of the table. Best for Two Wells were Ben Stubing and Ned Seccafien whilst Balaklava named leaders Dereck Fredriechs and Hayden Walker. This week Balaklava are at home to Mallala, United are away to Hamley Bridge and Hummocks Watchmen host Two Wells. Virginia has the bye. Round 4 scores - May 1, 2010

McARDLE 2 EAGLES JUGGERNAUT ROLLS ON by Wayne Hutchison The Eagles juggernaut kept on rolling on Saturday with their third win in as many starts coming in the form of a 50 point demolition job of Hamley Bridge. Hummocks Watchmen jumped the Bombers early with a five goal to one opening term and were never really challenged. As is proving to be a trademark of the Eagles this year the scoring was once again evenly shared with eight goal kickers, four of which were multiples. Big man Shaun Light was terrific as was Vice-captain Shane Braham whilst for the Bombers Luke Slok and young Stuart Gregory were among their best. Balaklava also managed to remain undefeated in the early stages of 2010 with a hard fought win over a much improved United. The Peckers trailed for much of the day but managed to overcome a five point deficit at the final change to get home by 13 points. Benjamin Catford was once again prominent for the winners and was aided by Vice-captain Grant Willmer. The Tigers who were led by Captain Simon Schulz and young Brodie Brown were perhaps unlucky to lose and will be ruing a slack second quarter in which they failed to score but both these teams were impressive and can expect plenty of success throughout the rest of the season. In the other game for the round Mallala defeated Virginia in a thriller. The two quality teams exchanged one quarter of dominance each in the middle of the game with the first and final quarters being virtually dead even. The Magpies dominated the second quarter, kicking six goals to one to open up a 33 point lead and the task to get back into the game looked beyond the Rams. To their credit however, they came out after half time, all guns blazing and added seven goals to two to close the gap to just three points at the final change. The final quarter was a dogged affair with only one goal being kicked. The Rams could only add four points enabling the Magpies to hang on by a straight kick. The experienced players led the way for Mallala with Jason Earl and Christian Rimmer the stand-outs. Also terrific were Brad Griffiths and Daniel Feely with four goals each. On the other side of the coin Graham Rigney was excellent with his three goals as was Anthony Johnston. No one side can take a clear advantage out of this game and indeed the only thing Saturday revealed is that we can expect some red hot battles from these two teams who will feature prominently in September. This week winless United host third placed Mallala and this game could be a lot closer than previous form suggests. The Magpies are a quality outfit but the Tigers are playing some good footy despite being winless and particularly at home they will take some beating. Two Wells are at home to Balaklava this week and this is a big ask for the Roosters who are yet to accumulate any premiership points. Polar opposites, the Peckers haven’t lost any points this season and deserve to go in hot favourites, even at Two Wells Oval. Bottom placed Hamley Bridge will travel to Virginia in the only other game for the round. Even though the Rams didn’t come away with the points they were quite brilliant in patches last week and should deal with the Bombers quite comfortably. Round 3 - April 24, 2010

Wakefield Tip – Hummocks Watchmen by 28 points Two Wells vs. Virginia @ Two Wells Both sides have started their respective seasons on the back foot with opening round losses and will be desperate to right the ledger on Saturday. The Roosters lead for much of the day, away to the Magpies but could only manage three goals after halftime. The Rams were also in a winning position at three quarter time against the Eagles but couldn’t go on with the job. This is shaping up to be the game of the round and it could go either way. Perhaps the home ground advantage will just be enough. Tip - Two Wells by 7 points MALLALA WINS OPENING ROUND by Wayne Hutchinson Mallala started their premiership defence on the right foot with a 15 point win over Two Wells on Saturday. The slow starting premiers trailed Two Wells by 15 points at half time before a strong second half saw them reverse the deficit. Two Wells started quickly but missed plenty of gettable opportunities early, eventually coming back to harm them in the second half. The Roosters doubled the amount of scoring shots of the Magpies in the first half but could only convert their dominance into a two goal lead. Once Mallala got running after halftime they showed signs of the form which earned them the flag last year and managed to kick seven goals to two. Best for the winners were Ryan Montgomerie and Jason Earl, with Brad Griffiths kicking four. Lee Allmond was excellent for Two Wells as was Brad Fitzgerald who kicked two. In the only other game for the round Hummocks Watchmen finished out a tight game much better than Virginia to eventually win by 21 points. It was a close for much of the day with deficits of fewer than 10 points at all three breaks. The Eagles were full of run in the final quarter and recorded a strong win over a team which will again be around the mark. David Barnes kicked three and was named best ahead of Vice-captain Shane Braham and Captain Jared Wilson. For the Rams Troy Wilkey and Mark Nykamp played good games as did Brendon Niklaus who also kicked three. Round 1 - April 10, 2010

The Magpies finished last season one game clear with 13 wins and 3 losses, progressing straight to the grand final with a win over Virginia in the second semi. The Roosters finished third after the home and away season with 10 wins and 6 losses but an impressive finals campaign saw them advance to the grand final with wins over Hummocks Watchmen in the first semi and Virginia in the preliminary. As expected Mallala proved to be too strong, pulling away after quarter time to win by a comfortable 39 points to cap off a terrific season. The Magpies deserve to go in favourites but expect a closer affair this time around. There will be a number of very talented players strutting around with Plains Producer medallist Liam Whitwell (Mallala), runner-up Lee Allmond (Two Wells) and Des Ross Trophy holder Aaron Hand (Two Wells) the pick of the bunch. Tip - Mallala by 15 points. Virginia vs. Hummocks Watchmen @ Virginia A disappointing end to an otherwise terrific season, Virginia will be looking to go one better this year. The Rams finished second with 12 wins and 4 losses but lost successive games in the finals to ultimately finish third. The Eagles meanwhile held on to fourth spot with 8 wins but bowed out in the first semi to grand finalists Two Wells. Virginia will be keen to reassert themselves as a force and put the disappointment of last September behind them and at home they should be too strong for the Eagles. Tip- Virginia by 31 points. MALLALA TOO STRONG IN GRAND FINAL Played September 19, 2009
