NEW COACH FOR ANGASTON - MATTHEW HERRMAN

October 17, 2012

Following the resignation of Craig Hadden as Angaston Football Club’s A-Grade coach before the end of the 2012 minor round, the Panthers last Monday night appointed Matthew Herrmann as his successor.

Matthew began his coaching career in 1997 as Assistant Coach Under 15, Gawler Central Football Club.

Since then in 2001 he was Assistant Coach Reserves at Gawler Central Football Club, 2003 Assistant Coach A-Grade, Hamley Bridge Football Club; 2005 Assistant Coach Reserves, Gawler Central Football Club; 2006 Assistant Coach Division 1 Reserves, Salisbury North Football Club; Assisted (player match-ups) A-Grade Division 1, Salisbury North Football Club; 2007 Coach Under 15, Gawler Central Football Club; Assistant Coach Division 1 Reserves, Salisbury North Football Club;

2008 Coach Under 17½, Gawler Central Football Club, B, L, & G Junior Coach of the Year; 2009 Coach Under 17½, Gawler Central Football Club, Coach Under 15 C.D.F.C Country Development Squad, Coach Under 17½ B., L. & G. Association Team; 2010 Coach Under 17½, Gawler Central Football Club; Coach Under 15 C.D.F.C Country Development Squad;

2011 Assistant Coach U18’s (Midfield line coach), Central District Football Club (SANFL); 2012 Assistant Coach U18’s and U16’s (Midfield line coach), Central District Football Club (SANFL).

In 1997 - Level 1 Coaching Course completed and 2008 - Level 2 Coaching Course completed.

It is a sort of "home coming" for Matthew as his father, Barry "Bunny" Herrmann was an A-Grade premiership player for Angaston in 1971 and Colts premiership player in 1966. Matthew’s cousins, John and Tim Herrmann also played junior and senior football for the Panthers in the 1980’s/90’s/00’s.

Another cousin, Grant played for Freeling and Willaston throughout his career.

Matthew’s older brother, Kym was footballer of the year in 1997 when playing for Gawler Central and won a Mail Medal in 2003 for Hamley Bridge.

Many Angaston supporters will remember Matthew’s grandfather and grandmother, Con and Kit Landers who lived in the old railway house opposite the Angaston Town Hall (now Taste Eden Valley) during the late 60’s/70’s.

Con’s brother, Vin Landers was a League footballer for West Torrens in the early 1960’s.

First 350 game player – Matthew Doecke

contributed – May 29, 2012

Angaston’s Matthew Doecke played his 350th A-Grade game at Nuriootpa on May 26, 2012 to become the first BLG player to play 350 A-Grade games and he was also the first to play 300, which also counts the former Barossa & Light Football Association.

Matthew’s first game was on April 25, 1992 at Eudunda aged 17 years and 182 days when Peter Morgan was coach (born October 26, 1974). His 50th game was on July 30, 1994 at Nuriootpa. His 100th was on July 5, 1997 at Angaston against Tanunda, 150th was on June 24, 2000 at Williamstown, 200th on June 28, 2003 at Williamstown, 250th on May 20, 2006 against Willaston at Angaston and 300th on May 30, 2009 at Williamstown. Amazingly his 150th, 200th and 300th games were all Williamstown.

Matthew did not miss a game from June 19, 1993 when he missed the match against Gawler Central at Gawler Central (not because of injury, but due to exams) until May 15, 2004 when he missed the match at South Gawler which means that he played 188 games in a row. He then played another 29 games straight before missing one at Tanunda in 2005 and he then played another 88 games straight since that Tanunda match in 2005 before missing the second match of the 2011 season against Freeling because he was overseas. Actually the three games that he missed as captain were all winning games. His 350th was 19 straight since the miss last season. Prior to the miss in 1993 he played 89 games straight counting A-Grade/Under 17/Under 15/14 matches (missing a match against Tanunda in 1988 in Under 14’s) and prior to that miss he played 21 games out of a possible 25. In plain English it means that he has only missed nine games since he first started playing Under 14’s in 1987 and four of them were in his first year of Under 14’s which gives him a career total of 434 games out of a possible 443 (counting his 350th). He has been captain 263 times out of a possible 266 (counting 350th), only missing three games (2004, 2005 and 2011) and winning 139, losing 124 and drawing three.

He has kicked 399 goals so far in A-Grade and has received 120 Association Linke/Schluter Medal Best & Fairest votes (18 of those were in 1996 when he came sixth).

Best goalkicking haul is 8 against Nuriootpa at Angaston in 2004. He has kicked 5 on six occasions - 1992 v. Eudunda at Angaston, 2005 v Nuriootpa at Nuriootpa and v Gawler Central at Angaston, 2009 v Barossa at Angaston and also at Williamstown and 2011 v Willaston at Willaston.

Matthew is in his 16th year as A-Grade Captain which is a record for the club since 1908

As far as A-Grade games only Craig Hadden with 300 last week is close to him. Of the current players, Brandon Kurtz with 136 is the closest.

Matthew’s achievements have been as follows:

2012 – Played his 350th A-Grade game and Captain for the 16th season and he and wife, Anita are expecting their first child in June/July.

2011 – A-Grade Captain.

2010 – A-Grade Captain and won his fifth A-Grade Best & Fairest for Angaston Football Club to equal the record with Roger Miles.

Matthew’s previous wins were 1995, 1996, 1998 and 2000. Matthew was also been runner-up twice, 2006 and 2007. Roger won in 1948, 1949, 1950, 1952 and 1953.

After an association and club record 330 A-Grade games and a ten year gap since his last win it was a great effort. His wife, Anita also won the netball best & fairest in Senior 1 that season.

Matthew also won the Sponsors’ Player of the Year award for the sixth time. His other wins were 1995, 1996, 2000, 2006, 2007. Next best is three by Nick Reimann in 1997-98-99.

2009 - Played his 300th game at Williamstown (first Angaston/B&L/BLG player to do this) on May 30 and won Most Constructive trophy.

2008 - Met his future wife, Anita Bone and became captain again after a season off.

2007 - Runner-up to the Best & Fairest. Won Sponsors’ Player of the Year for the fifth time - a record. After 11 years had a rest from the captaincy.

2006 - Runner-up to the Best & Fairest for the first time. Awarded with Life Membership (39th) of the club. Won Sponsors’ Player of the Year award.

2005 - Represented the B., L. & G. in the Inter-Assn. match versus Hills League at Balhannah.

2004 - Represented the B., L. & G. in the Inter-Assn. match versus Hills League at Angaston. Named in the forward pocket in Angaston’s Team of the Century. Kicked 8 goals against Nuriootpa at Angaston which is his best ever haul.

2003 - Entered top ten of 200 plus A-Grade games for Angaston Football Club. Captained Angaston’s first premiership since 1986. Tied with Brenton Bascombe for the Player of Finals Club Medal. Won the Most Determined trophy.

2002 - Represented B. & L. Assn. against North Eastern at Clare. A-Grade Most Dedicated Player Trophy winner.

2001 - Represented B. & L. against Gawler & District at Kapunda. Selected in B., L. & G. Team of the Year on the wing. Most Dedicated Player winner. Runner-Up to the Sponsors’ Player of the Year.

2000 - Represented B. & L. Assn. against Yorke Peninsula at Kadina. Selected on the wing in the Association Team of the Year. Won A-Grade Best & Fairest for the fourth time (one behind the record held by Roger Miles) and the Most Valuable Player Trophies. Won Sponsors’ Player of the Year.

1999 - A-Grade Most Constructive Player, won the Southcorp Best on Ground in Grand Final and Angaston’s own Sponsors’ Player of the Finals. Selected in Assn. Team of the Year on wing.

1998 - Tied in Best & Fairest with Craig Hadden. Selected in Assn. Team of the Year on wing. 1997 - Best Team Man and Runner-Up to Sponsors’ Player of the Year. Represented B., L. & G. against Riverland at Nuriootpa. Selected in Assn. Team of the Year on the wing.

1997 – Named in Association Team of the Year.

1996 - B., L. & G. Assn. Footballer of the Year and Angaston’s Best & Fairest and Sponsors’ Player of the Year. Represented B., L. & G. against Riverland at Renmark. Appointed captain of the A-Grade and still is in 2012 apart from 2007 season.

1995 - A-Grade Best & Fairest and Sponsors’ Player of the Year. Represented B., L. & G. against Great Southern at Glenelg and Murray Mallee at Norwood in Quit Championships.

1994 - A-Grade Most Constructive Trophy winner and third in Best & Fairest.

1992 - Debut against Eudunda at Eudunda along with Nick Reimann, Jason Kingsley and Michael Harvey. Kicked 10 goals in his first season. Best 1st Year Senior Player winner.

1991 - Under 17’s Best & Fairest.

1989 - Under 17’s Best Attention to Training winner.

1988 - Under 15’s Most Constructive Team Man winner.

1987 - Under 14’s Encouragement Trophy winner.

Other long-serving players

Kapunda’s Sam Ryan played his 295th A-Grade game on Saturday.

Others with an outstanding record are Craig Hadden, Angaston who played his 301st A-Grade game on Saturday.

The only Angaston player in front of Matthew in total senior games played is Grant Falkenberg with 39 A-Grade and 333 Reserves for a total of 372.

Michael Falkenberg 202 A-Grade and 106 Reserves for a total of 308 and James Linke with 273 A-Grade and 30 Reserves for a total of 303.

Richard Miles 262 plus four Reserves, Nick Reimann 254 plus 42 Reserves, Steven Moulds 227 plus 23 Reserves and David Vaughan has played 254 senior games (158 A-Grade and 96 Reserves). Craig Harvey, 215 A-Grade and 1 Reserves.

Others to do well for Angaston have been Malcolm Johnston with a definite 212 A-Grade and 36 Reserves but that is only the known Reserves figure, not exact figure. Probably not a lot more as he spent time at Central District and Pleasant Valley.

Brian Hurn 1957-1975 - Angaston played 314 games in that time not taking off any missed games. In 1974-1975 he missed 13 games and in 1961-1962 he missed nine games which takes it down to 292 at the best.

Roger Miles 1945-1961 - Angaston played 258 games in that time and he played Reserves in 1962 (only 15 games) so most he could ever get was 273 without counting missed games.

A quick scan of some of the other clubs and no-one else has any real hold over Matthew that can be found, although not all clubs have been checked.

Apart from Kapunda’s Sam Ryan others have been Greg Hambour on 65 A-Grade and 235 Reserves for 300 in total, Paul Higgins 272 A-Grade and 22 Reserves for a total of 292, Robert Jarman 255 A-Grade and 22 Reserves for a total of 277, Mark Mickan 174 A-Grade and 155 Reserves which totals 329, Norm O’Brien with 294 A-Grade and Terry Ryan 246 A-Grade and 71 Reserves for a total of 317 games.

Long serving Robertstown player and former B. & L. President, Stan Noske played for 42 years for Robertstown but most of them were in Reserves. Ten games a year would give him 420.

Greg Post, Eudunda played 400 senior games with over 250 of them in A-Grade.

Gawler Central’s Aaron King broke their club record a few years ago when he played his 201st. Peter Symes, father of Crows player Brad Symes, previously held their record with 200 A-Grade.

Peter Nitschke played for many seasons with the Nuriootpa Tigers which included a lot of Reserves matches.

Tanunda’s record was broken in 2009 when Carl Samain played his 261st senior game.

South Gawler’s Peter Bain played over 300 but mostly in Reserves.

South’s Robert Argent played over 400 but not all A-Grade. He began in the Reserves in 1951 before promotion to the seniors in 1954. Unbelievably, he would play A-Grade until 1967 and continue on as an assistant coach and Reserves stalwart right up to 1970.

Des Clark of South Gawler had a career spanning twenty years with sixteen seasons in the A-Grade and four in the Reserves.

Eddie Schwerdt played 180 games and all A-Grade. Jeff Brown played 213 games and all in A-Grade so Jeff would hold South’s modern B., L. & G. record with Robert Argent having the all-time record.

Doecke’s 300th game came one day short of the 40th Anniversary of the first 300 gamer in the SANFL. Lindsay Head, West Torrens became the first SANFL player to play 300 games on May 31, 1969 and Matthew’s was May 30, 2009.

Congratulations 300 games - Craig Hadden

18 May 2012

Congratulations to Craig Hadden who plays his 300th A-Grade game on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at Angaston against Kapunda. His first game was on July 11, 1987 against Gawler Central at Gawler Central (still an Under 17 player and aged 17 years and 14 days being born on June 27, 1970). His 50th game was on June 27, 1992 against South Gawler at Angaston. His 100th game was against Barossa District at Williamstown on June 10, 1995 and 150th was on May 2, 1998 against Willaston at Angaston. His 200th was at Freeling on May 26, 2001 and 250th at Willaston against Freeling in the Preliminary Final on September 10, 2005.

Craig was the Under 15’s Best Utility in 1984, Captain and Best & Fairest of the Under 15’s in 1985 and also came third in the Association Best & Fairest Medal. In 1986 Angaston’s top goalkicker in Under 17’s with 24 goals and in 1987 Captain and Runner-Up to Best & Fairest in Under 17’s.

He was the Most Constructive Player in the A-Grade in 1990. In 1992 he won the Best Team Player Trophy and in 1993 won the Most Constructive Player Trophy again and was Deputy Vice Captain. In 1994 he was A-Grade Best Team Player, Vice Captain and coached the Under 17’s. 1995 Most Constructive and Vice Captain. 1996 Best Team Man and in 1997 won the Most Valuable Player trophy and named in BLG Team of the Year at full back.

In 1998 Craig tied with Matthew Doecke for the A-Grade Best & Fairest and was selected in the BLG Team of the Year at full back. In 1999 he was A-Grade Deputy Vice Captain and part of the losing Grand Final team. In 2000 Craig was A-Grade Vice Captain, Runner-Up to the A-Grade Best & Fairest, selected in BLG Team of the Year at full back and represented the Barossa & Light against Yorke Peninsula at Kadina.

2001 A-Grade Vice Captain and Most Creative Player and best goalkicker for season with 35 goals. Also represented the Mid North against Southern Districts at AAMI Stadium, Adelaide in their win in the SA Country Championships. Also represented the B&L in their win against Gawler & Districts in the Inter-Assn. match at Kapunda and selected in the BLG Team of the Year in the back pocket.

2003 he was unfortunate to have a year off due to employment and moved to Sydney which cost him the ultimate – an A-Grade premiership. Returned home in 2004 and was named on the half back flank of Angaston’s Team of the Century.

2005 Most Constructive A-Grade player. 2006-07-08 Reserves Coach and Best & Fairest in Reserves in 2008 and also coached Auskick that year. In 2009 he took over as A-Grade coach, which he still is and reached the Grand Final in his first year at Freeling against Tanunda but went down 10-8 to 13-12 - this is still Tanunda’s closest margin out of their current four premierships in a row.

On June 23, 2007 against South Gawler at South Gawler, Craig broke the then A-Grade games club record when he overtook James Linke who retired on 273 a few years prior. Earlier that day, after 25 losses in a row, the Reserves finally got over the line against South Gawler in what was a big day for coach Craig. Apart from the first quarter and a bit of the last, the Panthers were far superior. It was their first win since the third last round of 2005 and Craig’s first win as Reserves coach. South Gawler presented Craig with a South Gawler history book, stubby holder and bottle of port at the Blue & White Cup /McGrath Medal presentations after the match. Craig was then sitting on 274, James Linke 273, Matthew Doecke 270 and Richard Miles 262 being the other players that were known to have played over 250 A-Grade.

All up "Hadds" has played 299 A-Grade games and kicked 192 goals and played 13 Reserves games and kicked five goals. His first Reserves game was at Gawler Central on Monday, June 8, 1992 and second game was not until August 11, 2007 at Willaston.

His best A-Grade goalkicking hauls were in 2001 when he kicked 8 against Willaston at Angaston. In 2000 he kicked 7 against Gawler Central at Angaston, 5 against Willaston at Willaston in 2005 and 5 against Riverton/Saddleworth/Marrabel United at Angaston in 1987.

Wearing guernsey number 16 for most of his career, until the last few years, Craig was lucky enough to wear it again in his 300th due to the unavailability of new recruit, Alex Reincke.

PROGRAM ANNOUNCED FOR 2012

At the annual general meeting of the Barossa, Light & Gawler Football Association at the Vine Inn, Nuriootpa, it was decided that the 2012 match programme would start on April 21.

(It is interesting to note that the two 2011 A Grade grand finalists will confront each other in the first round of the season)

Barossa District will host their first two matches of the season at Lyndoch against South Gawler and then Angaston on April 28. Angaston will have the first bye of the season and Kapunda the last.

Finals will be held at Freeling, Willaston and Tanunda with Barossa District hosting the Grand Final (venue to be decided) on September 22. The finals will again be over four weeks.

A "Safety Round" and "Cancer Council Call To Arms" round will again be played.

All teams will have a bye for the annual Zone Championships on June 30-July 1.

Nobby Symes was re elected unopposed as President. Mick Brien and Len Warren were re-elected unopposed as Directors.

Other appointments were Nick Hambour, Dr. Clive Behrndt, Brian Menzel and John and Elva Falland as patrons. Gerhardy & Whitelum as auditors. Brian Teakle, Chris Gill, Ian Carmichael, Paul Little, Ken Dadds and Peter Whimpress will continue as Tribunal Commissioners. ZOK will fulfil his second year of a two year contract as Football Operations Manager,

Carl Whitaker will again be senior umpires' coach and Kristian Whitaker will be in charge of the junior umpires. Peter Whimpress is the association solicitor.

The current position of Co-ordinator Junior Development is currently under review with the view of it being split into two positions - Junior Football Officer (Under 9-Under 13) and Junior Development Coordinator (Under 15-Under 17)

Revenue for the 2011 finals series were up on 2010 and no Adelaide AFL teams playing finals helped in some ways. The banning of alcohol being taken into the ground has also attributed to the host clubs enjoying increased revenue sales.

Match starting times will again stay the same for the minor round: Under 15, 9.45 a.m.; Under 17, 11 a.m.; Reserves, 12.35 p.m. and A-Grade, 2.20 p.m. For the first three finals series, the commencement times will be Under 15, 9.30 a.m.; Under 17, 10.50 a.m.; Reserves, 12.30 p.m. and A-Grade, 2.20 p.m. However, the Grand Final will be Under 15, 9.15 a.m.; Under 17, 10.40 a.m.; Reserves, 12.25 p.m. and A-Grade, 2.20 p.m.

Minor round admission fees will remain at 2011 prices. $6 adults 18 years and over, $2.50 aged/invalid pensioner and $2.50 entry if prior to 10 a.m.

Admission fees for the finals will remain at 2011 prices with the exception of the adult fee for the grand final. This will increase to $10. (Previously $9)

Admission for minor finals: $8 for adults over 17 years, $5 for aged/invalid pensioner, $3 for children 13 to 17 years and $22 for family of two adults and up to four children.

Admission for the Grand Final: $10 (previously $9) for adults over 17 years, $6 for aged/invalid pensioners, $4 for children 13 to 17 years and $24 for a family of two adults and four children.

Delegates voted for the association to again affiliate with the S.A.N.F.L.

Proposed amendments to the constitution regarding forfeits and the clubs' submission deadline for allocated total points rating were passed.

Proposals to amend the constitution relating to clearances from one club to another club within the BLGFA were defeated.

Clubs were reminded that commencing season 2012, all playing apparel (shorts/socks/guernseys) for grades from Under 15 to A-Grade, are to have the Community Football Board logo on them. Penalties to apply for the non conformist.

As stated previously, the season will officially commence on April 21 which is two weeks after Easter.
