POSSIBLE HISTORIC FINAL FOUR

Round Seven Report - June 3, 2013

Round 7 results in the Barossa Light and Gawler Football Association seem to indicate that the uncertaintities are behind us and the final four may be determined already. If so it would be of historic proportions as for the first time in the 26 year history of the BLG it may not include any of the remnat clubs from the old B & L Association.

While South Gawler are only in the current four on percentage and lost to leaders Willaston last Saturday, they showed enough in this game to be considered as genuine finals' contenders. Leading for most of the contest after a stellar first quarter they eventually succumbed to a bigger stronger Willaston. Richard Rosewall's progress as one of the competition's leading ruckmen received another boost with a best on ground performance while the usual star studded suspects in Joel Campbell, Shaun Baker and Luke Turner were all prominent.

The performance of the Lions younger brigade; Dan Goulding, Matt Foldesdy etc. on top of the experience and class of Aaron Bevis, Lee Makris suggest that they maybe the ultimate success isn't too far away.

At the Dog track Gawler Central put away a fellow form side in Kapunda by enough to suggest they are also the real deal. Leading at every change the Tigers were able to stave off the gallant Bombers as Brad Mercer plundered another bag of goals to prove the difference. The scintillating Dan Stanley continues to dsiplay his disposal wares also and long term Tigers, Aaron King, Kalon Heintze and Shane Souter have grown another leg. Jason Mackenzie was to the fore again for Kapunda with support from Brad Taylor, Brad Valentine and the in form youngster Sam McKinnon.

Tanunda went to the Williamstown oval as genuine contenders in the eyes of nost pundits but after 42 point defeat in wet conditions their outlook is being re-evaluated. Six of the game's eleven goals were kicked in the first quarter before conditions and the ball deteriorated. Two of those were the Magpie's however they were to be their last majors of the match. The Bulldogs finished with nine for the day as Heath Commane notched up five of those. Despite missing eight first pick players Barossa demonstrated they are still the team to beat. Michael Taylor, Josh Berrett and Ross Christie were also instrumental in the victory. Tom Schiller continued his tremendous form and must be considered a medal chance while Craig Underwood, Sam Agars and Ryan Bignell all put in for the losers.

At Freeling the battle for the wooden spoon between the Redlegs and Angaston saw the former take a big step toward avoiding it with a strong 56 point win. Freeling's runners with their cleaner disposal cut the Panthers to ribbons as they were never seriously challlenged after the opening stanza. Scott Williams slipped under the radar to kick five goals,  Travis Muster was magic, Darren Leske was 100% reliable and Josh Robinson delivered all the promise of his senior colts form. Matt Head was the only Angaston player to consistently back himself, Beau Byster before coming off injured played his best game for some time and ruckman Michael Griffiths couldn't have done more in giving his team first opportunity.

No games next week but round 8 the week after is a watershed round for many clubs. The heavyweights Willaston and Barossa Districts clash at Willaston and depending on selection the Bulldogs are slight favourites. Gawler Central strengthened by a strong mid year signing should smash Angaston. It could be Kapunda's last chance to stake a claim at home against South, however the Lion's speed should be too much. The biggest derby in the comp sees Tanunda host Nuriootpa and the visiting Tigers with a double week off may be too strong for the reeling Magpies.

Round 6 report - GAWLER CENTRAL BEAT WILLASTON BY A POINT

Sunday 26 May 2013

The oft quoted 'one week at a time' saying which is most used to avoid getting too far ahead of expectations or the actual circumstances is very much the norm in BLG football right now. 2013 early form side Donnybrooks threw away a 17 point lead late in the last quarter to go down by the smallest margin to arch rivals Gawler Central. Willaston were coming off a series of big wins while the improved Central's had thrown a lead against Nuriootpa. Sean Baker appears well on his way to a third Schluter Medal with a best on ground performance, but that still wasn't enough to win his team the game. Dan Stanley wasn't far behind with a great display of foot skills. Paul Bova had minimal impact on the game until he slotted through his 3rd goal to put the Tigers one point up with 30 seconds to play. Willaston won the centre clearance and gave Brad Tosold the chance to win the game from about 50 metres out directly in front.

With the siren sounding during his run up he failed to make good contact and didn't score. Not his fault as the Donnybrook's failed to capitalise on early chances and could have had the game in the bag at half time. Full credit though to Gawler Central who took the chance when the opportunity presented. The proverbial week may be extended to season for the Tanunda Magpies who have dominated the competition since their centenary year.

Last year's finalists for the first time since 2000 season Gawler South lowered the Magpie colours on Tanunda Oval for the first time since 2007. Leading for most of the day South resisted a late surge to take the points by 20 points in a game where both teams had less than full strength lineups.

Midfielder Kristian Economou was best for the winners, veteran Aaron Bevis was important, once again the younger brigade lead by Matt Foldesdy were prominent and Chris Muslino as a forward kicked 4 goals.

Tanunda went into the game without anywhere near their best defence however Craig Underwood, Tom Schiller and Lachie Kemp did their best to keep them in the game.

The Shanahan Mickan Cup went the way of home side Kapunda against neighbours Freeling. A better organised Bombers with Jason Mackenzie distributing the ball and the constantly tagged Brad Taylor breaking free for four goals were always in control. Young star Sam McKinnon and the highly rated Brad Williams were also good for the victors.

The Redlegs had good players in the experienced trio of Darren Leske, big forward Sam Carmichael and consumate playmaker Travis Muster.Taylor won the Mark Pitman medal for best on ground.

An undermanned Barossa Districts beat an equally undermanned Nuriootpa on their home deck by 20 points in a game which probably didn't really indciate either side's true potential. It was the Heath Commane show in the first half as he plundered five goals to set up the win, then the third quarter became a desert with the Bulldogs scoreless and the Tigers only able to add one goal.

The last quarter went to Barossa on points but they were unable to deliver a knockout blow and run away with the game. Ross Christie controlled the ruck, the Stelzer boys Matt and Paul were dominant in the midfield and Commane was damaging. Dan Burgess played manfully in the ruck against the much more experienced Christie, Jason Rodda continued his good season on the wing and Ryan Byrne with four goals was always a target up forward.

Tanunda's woes may continue this week as they have no respite as they head to Williamstown to confront the Bulldogs since their shock 2012 Grand Final. Barossa are likely to be stronger and regain more players than the Magpies and continue their run of losses to three. Freeling and Angaston meet at the Cherry St ground with both desperately seeking a second season win. Could go either way, but maybe at home gives the Redlegs a slight advantage. Gawler Central host Kapunda and on paper it looks an even match, Gawler Central have been averaging over a 100 points per game and their better efficincies in attack should see them through. Luke Howard vesus Jason Mackenzie however should be worth watching. Donnybrooks visit another arch rival in South Gawler who are coming off a team lifting win. However that probably won't save them against Willaston on the rebound.

NO DOUBTING DONNYBROOK DESTINY - Round 5 report, Sun May 19, 2013

There's no doubt the Willaston Donnybrooks are destined for the finals and in many minds they are on track to collect their first A Grade flag since 1999. Their 95 point win over Freeling leaves them undefeated thus far and with three successive victories over the 15 goal mark they have become the benchmark of the competition. 13 of their goals come from their big forwards Jamie Williams, Jimmy Jones and Stephen Marr plus there were 8 other goalkickers.

Shaun Baker led a dominant midfield and the Willaston defence pounced on any Freeling errors. Local product Tyson Ruediger, consistent new player Scott Williams and the old reliable Darren Leske were best for the Redlegs.

Tanunda and Gawler Central hit the Dog Track with changed sides from their last games, but the Magpies weren't prepared for the whacking the Tigers dished out. Tanunda have only lost a handful of games in the last five years and one would have to go back a long way to find a defeat of this magnitude. Both teams had their goal kicking radar on but 33 scoring shots to 17 shows how much more of the ball Gawler Central got.

Ex Port Adelaide forward Brad Mercer kicked 12 in a sensational display, Tiger ruckman Luke Howard sparked the clearances and Sean Brading was everywhere. Tom Schiller continued his stellar season, but early injuries to Tanunda including Nick Schmidt and Ryan Bignell saw them play without a bench for a large part of the game.

Angaston and Kapunda met with similar records, and both really needed the two points to get themselves back in contention. The Bombers were the more desperate and better organised taking control of the game right from the start. Added scoreboard pressure for the Panthers came from the Bombers amazing accuracy and the game was all but over at the long break.

Wes Farley kicked 5 for the winners, Kim Bisset was adroit in the midfield but it was Kapunda coach Jason MacKenzie who set Kapunda going in the ruck and around the ground. Midfielder Greg Bain was best for Angaston and big man Michael Griffen also stood out.

Nuri's bad record away continued at South Gawler as they succumbed to the Lions by 20 points. Neither side was at full strength with absences from defence, attack and midfield. The game started as a shootout with 11 goals in the first quarter. South jumped ahead by a significant margin in the second, however Nuri came back in the third to put the margin at just over two goals.

Chris Musolino booted 7 goals for the winners in the absence of Justin Trewen and youngster Nathan Bartsch displayed some of the midfield form which saw him one of the sensations of 2012. Dan Burgess was best for the Tigers as the temporary ruckman while evergreens Jason Rodda and Brett Thiele kept Nuri in the game.

Its only Round 6 this weekend but it could shape the final's series. Willaston versus Gawler Central has become one of the biggest games for several years. No love lost here as this game could become physical. I favour the Donnybrooks because of their unmatchable forward line. Kapunda should have too much for Freeling and claim the Mickan/Shanahan Cup, and Jason Mackenzie to win the Pitman Medal. Barossa should beat the Nuri Tigers even though it is at Centennial Park where so far they are unbeaten this year. Tanunda can regroup against South at Magpie Park but I suspect an upset!

WILLASTON THE REAL DEAL

Round 4 Report - Sunday 12 May 2013

The Donnybrooks continued their unbeaten start to the 2013 campaign with a 92 point drubbing of Angaston. Had they kicked straighter earlier the margin could have been greater as Willaston outclassed the Panthers in every department.

One of the biggest forward lines in recent memory saw the Donnybrooks dominate the air and their defenders turned over most Angaston forward movements with consumate ease. Shaun Baker is back to his medal winning best and along with Ashley Fry and Sam Walton dominated the midfield.

Michael Griffiths and Matt Doecke were the standouts for the losers although some credit must be given to the Angaston defenders who were under immense pressure from the first siren.

Nuriootpa had wholesale forced changes and looked to be very much understrength against a revitalised Gawler Central. Trailing at the last change by 3 goals Nuri showed their sponsors they were worth the money by kicking 6 straight to steal the game by three points.

Nat Salter as he did in the Anzac game nailed the vital goals to finish with 7 for the day. Central's big gun forward line of Brad Mercer and Paul Bova kicked nine between them as Luke Howard won the ruck, however the self belief of Nuri Tiger players like Jason Rodda, Charlie Edwards and Craig Gogoll saw them snatch an important victory.

Rumours of Roger James returning to the field for Barossa District to invigorate their season were unrealised, but it did not matter as Heath Commane booted nine to steer the Bulldogs to 29 point win over South Gawler. Barossa led all day however the Lions wouldn't go away and persisted, but just couldn't bridge the gap. Ross Christie gave his midfield first use and Paul Stelzer belted it down Commane's throat.

The rejuvenated Justin Trewen kicked four for South who were also well served by the returning Aaron Bevis, Matt Trezicack and Nathan Bartsch.

It was a similar story for Freeling at Tanunda as they managed to stay in touch all day, but found the Magpies always had an answering goal.  Sam Agars complimented coach Ben Britton with 5 goals each as emerging star Lachie Kemp was also good and Tom Schiller continued his sensational form on the wing. Sam Carmichael kicked four for Freeling, who were without big man Shane Schubert that should be able to take something out of this loss.

Round 5 looms this week as an important round for some clubs as losses could see them start to slip behind the course needed to play finals.Tanunda travel to the Dog Track which is one of the few grounds they have lowered their colours in the last few seasons. I expect them to beat Gawler Central, however the Tigers are one of those clubs that need this to stay in touch. Willaston should be too strong for Freeling at Cherry St, the Redlegs will persist but the Donnybrooks are too big and strong. The Bombers head to Angaston and the loser of this can possible kiss the finals goodbye. Kapunda have had their bye so have a littler bit more room that the Panthers. Kapunda narrowly I feel. South host Nuriootpa, who at the moment are winning at home and losing away. This game depends on how close either can get to fullstrength, but I think South's at home in another close one.

ROUND THREE REPORT - Sunday 5 May 2013

It would seem its anyone's guess where the 2013 BLG season is heading after another round of extraordinary results, however I think there are some obvious indicators now.

Every club has now posted at least one win, two are undefeated albeit both have had the bye and long range final's aspirations have soared and then nosedived for others.

One early final certainty if there is such a thing is surely the Tanunda Magpies. They lost their opener after losing a host of top class players off season and were about to be written off by the pundits, but then have reclaimed their repect with two emphatic victories.

On Saturday they continued their unbeaten run in the Heidenreich Cup defeating Angaston by 53 points. They shut down the Panther's playmakers, released their own and up forward coach Ben Britton kicked 8 goals to be the difference.

Angaston matched it early and were still in touch at the long break but after injury to key recruit Jackson O'Brien were always on the back foot.

Defending premiers who retain the majority of their player stock would normally expect an easy ride but Barossa District must be wondering what football is all about after losing to Gawler Central at the dogtrack. There was only 14 points in it, which is a far cry from the huge margins in their first two outings but this combination was hugely strengthened with premiership players in James Angus and Darren Sharp returning.

The unheralded Tigers despite conceding an early break matched it with the premier with Jake Asher sneaking under everyone's radar again and new forward Brad Mercer complimenting the dangerous and unpredictabe Paul Bova.

If Freeling was a racetrack it would have been swarming with stewards as the Redlegs came off a 144 shellacking to eke out a 14 point win over Nuriootpa, who were coming off a strong win in the Anzac Day clash. The Tigers rested coach Nat Salter and the unfortunate Chad Obst is out again with a serious knee injury, while the Redlegs promoted a number of youngsters.

Fortunes fluctuated in the first half but the home team kept their nose in front for all the second half to record a courageous win. Locals Max Doherty and Sam Carmichael led the way for the victors as the super stars from Nuri couldn't get going.

Kapunda started the season with a bang but now have expereinced their second ricochet in a row as the unbeaten Donnybrooks smashed them in all departments. Willaston led from go to whoa on the Bomber's own runway finishing with a 9 goal last term.

Shaun Baker and Ash Fry were dynamic around the ball and big Jamie Williams led the free scoring forward line with 5 goals. Jason Mackenzie and Aiden Zwar were the best for the home team beaten by a Steve O'Connor team destined for the 'big dance' it seems.

Kapunda have the week off to recuperate while the rest return to the fray. It would be good to think that we could see some more unusual results however the season should start to settle from this round. Barossa Districts should bounce back to account for South Gawler at Williamstown, home ground advantage won't save Nuriootpa against Gawler Central, Tanunda will give Freeling a reality check and probably name your own margin for the Donnybrooks at home against Angaston. Final four from this point should be Willaston, Tanunda, Gawler Central and Barossa Districts in any order you want and I have a gut feeling that we will see the first ever all Gawler final in BLG history.

ROUND TWO REPORT - April 28, 2013

Its only 2 rounds gone in the Barossa Light and Gawler Football Association and I doubt if anyone has a grip on what's happened and what wil happen. Only one side hasn't won a game and other than Willaston who had the bye all sides who won in round one lost in round two.

Kapunda had a sensational win to kick off their season and it was expected that they would have a real chance to beat the Magpies who started the season with a loss to Willaston. Not to be, as Tanunda coach Ben britton broke their back with 7 goals, however it was nowhere near an individual effort as the remants of the squad that has won four out of the last five premierships demonstrated the structure and talent was still there. Kapunda coach Jason Mackenzie possibly picked up the three Schluter Medal votes but thereafter it was all Magpies.

The defending premier Barossa Districts reversed their result of round one with a 23 goal win over Freeling. The return of Ross Christie gave them dominance in the ruck, but still doesn't explain either result. The Redlegs had no answers and couldn't get the ball past the centre line as their defenders worked overtime to clear the ball only to see it return immediately. Dean Cutting was a stand out with 8 goals and Heath Commane also found the big sticks 6 times. It looks like a long season for Freeling.

At South Gawler the big improvers of 2012 and first round winners were given a reality check by cross town rivals Gawler Central who trailed for most of the day, but wouldn't go away and ended up winning by 20 points. The Tigers have had a massive influx over the summer with recruited players and returnees. The perennial finalists seem destined to prove that last season was an aberration while it could be back to the drawing board again for the Lions.

On form and results Round 3 looks to be a very difficult task in picking the winners but as I see it Barossa District should be too strong for Gawler Central, Nuri should dismantle Freeling big time, Angaston will bother Tanunda for a half but then the Magpies should kick away and Willaston will come off the bye to extract a workmanlike win at Kapunda.

Anzac Medal - Nat Salter.

The restitution of the Anzac Day clash between close rivals Nuriootpa and Angaston proved a great success with a semi final size crowd and respectful observance of the day.

If any one was concerned about the message of Anzac being lost they would have been overwhelmed by the template displayed at Nuriootpa on Thursday. It was a case of Jekyll and Hyde with both teams reversing their results and commitment from the previous week, and then within the game itself.

Nuri were terrible against Kapunda the previous game but against Angaston on Thursday they were committed and accountable from the first bounce. Duncan Cragg- Sapsford set the ball rolling edging Panther big man sensation Michael Griffiths on the day and Zac Dahms did a wonderful job on mercurial playmaker Jackson O'Brien.

The Tigers dominated the first half and probably should have been more than 23 points up at halftime. Only luck and some desperate defence by Lachlan Baker, Wil Falland and Dan Fischer kept a lid on the Tigers.

In the second half it was Angaston who squandered the opportunities and Nuri defenders Jarrad O'Riley, Craig Gogoll and Cale Ellison kept the Panthers at bay. Greg Bain, Jack Ryan and Matt Doecke lifted for the visitors. All stats including free kicks, clearances and inside 50's were reversed in the second half.

The key moment of the game came in the 3rd quarter when after a period of Angaston domination Ellison backed his judgement and came down the corridor to intercept a centering kick and put the Tigers into the 50m arc for the first time in the half.

Some steadying goals and circumspect play by Nathan Rayner meant that the Panthers who had got within four points at that stage were still behind on the scoreboard.

Two Coach's goals to Nat Salter in the last stanza sealed the result in a game where the highest skill displayed was tackling and constant stoppages prevented either side from finding any real rhythm.

OPENING ROUND FULL OF INTEREST

by a special correspondent   Sunday 21 April 2013

Round one of the 2013 Barossa Light & Gawler Football Association season was one of the most sensational in many memories. Not only were the two grand finalists from 2012 beaten but unheralded Kapunda battered the touted improvers Nuriootpa by 74 points. Even Freeling's 5-3 goal loss to South Gawler was short of the sizweable margin predicted by most pundits.

2012 wooden spooners Angaston defeat of the reigning premier Barossa Districts by nearly 12 goals was the leading upset. The Bulldogs were without some of their stars from the flag winning side through retirement and unavailability plus lost Michael Taylor early in the game from friendly fire but even so seemed to have the talent to beat Angaston. Panther's two major recruits Michael Griffiths and Jackson O'Brien were prominent for the victors as was the returning Craig Harvey. Barossa defenders Craig McAlpine and Micheal Baraglia were best for the home team seeing plenty of the ball as Angaston kept up the pressure for four quarters. The Panthers led on all statistics but most telling were the centre clearances and tackles.

A new look youthful Tanunda went to Willaston to confront an unknown in the 2013 Donnybrooks under returning mentor Steve O'Connor. The Magpies have won four out of the last five flags but may have to shelve aspirations for the 5 in 6 seasons record held by Nuriootpa if this game can be taken as an indicator. Schluter medalists duet of Sam Walton and Shaun Baker and big forward Jamie Williams led the way for the winners while Craig Underwood and SA country rep Nick Schmidt were the standouts for Tanunda. South Gawler led for most of the day at Freeling but couldn't get a convincing break on the Redlegs. Freeling have been unusually quiet on the recruiting scene this year and have put their faith in local youngsters and would probably be happy with this effort against a probable finalist. One game doesn't make a season however Kapunda have given themselves a great start by demolishing Nuriootpa who were very active and successsful in the recruiting market over summer.

Nuriootpa only have five days to bounce back against Angaston as they compete on Anzac Day this Thursday. Almost impossible to select now as form in trials and first game results are at odds with each other. Perhaps Angaston are slight favourites because they are coming off a real boosting win, but the Tigers will be keen to reverse everything from last Saturday. The return of Ross Christie should be enough for the Bulldogs to beat Freeling at Lyndoch and start their season rolling. Gawler Central had the bye and are unsighted to a certain extent but with the plethora of players recruited to the club in the off season they should be one of the improvers. They play South Gawler at the South ground and I would expect them to win. The last game is a tipping dilemma as Tanunda host Kapunda. Kapunda were the only team to beat Tanunda in the minor round last year but then were bundled out of the finals by the Magpies. Kapunda may be the smoky once again and as the team on the rise against a team desperately trying to tread water they should be the first to beat Tanunda at Tanunda for five years.

NEW COACH FOR ANGASTON - MATTHEW HERRMAN

October 17, 2012

Following the resignation of Craig Hadden as Angaston Football Club’s A-Grade coach before the end of the 2012 minor round, the Panthers last Monday night appointed Matthew Herrmann as his successor.

Matthew began his coaching career in 1997 as Assistant Coach Under 15, Gawler Central Football Club.

Since then in 2001 he was Assistant Coach Reserves at Gawler Central Football Club, 2003 Assistant Coach A-Grade, Hamley Bridge Football Club; 2005 Assistant Coach Reserves, Gawler Central Football Club; 2006 Assistant Coach Division 1 Reserves, Salisbury North Football Club; Assisted (player match-ups) A-Grade Division 1, Salisbury North Football Club; 2007 Coach Under 15, Gawler Central Football Club; Assistant Coach Division 1 Reserves, Salisbury North Football Club;

2008 Coach Under 17½, Gawler Central Football Club, B, L, & G Junior Coach of the Year; 2009 Coach Under 17½, Gawler Central Football Club, Coach Under 15 C.D.F.C Country Development Squad, Coach Under 17½ B., L. & G. Association Team; 2010 Coach Under 17½, Gawler Central Football Club; Coach Under 15 C.D.F.C Country Development Squad;

2011 Assistant Coach U18’s (Midfield line coach), Central District Football Club (SANFL); 2012 Assistant Coach U18’s and U16’s (Midfield line coach), Central District Football Club (SANFL).

In 1997 - Level 1 Coaching Course completed and 2008 - Level 2 Coaching Course completed.

It is a sort of "home coming" for Matthew as his father, Barry "Bunny" Herrmann was an A-Grade premiership player for Angaston in 1971 and Colts premiership player in 1966. Matthew’s cousins, John and Tim Herrmann also played junior and senior football for the Panthers in the 1980’s/90’s/00’s.

Another cousin, Grant played for Freeling and Willaston throughout his career.

Matthew’s older brother, Kym was footballer of the year in 1997 when playing for Gawler Central and won a Mail Medal in 2003 for Hamley Bridge.

Many Angaston supporters will remember Matthew’s grandfather and grandmother, Con and Kit Landers who lived in the old railway house opposite the Angaston Town Hall (now Taste Eden Valley) during the late 60’s/70’s.

Con’s brother, Vin Landers was a League footballer for West Torrens in the early 1960’s.
