PERFECT FINISH TO CENTENARY SEASON By Peter Argent

Tanunda’s emphatic 33-point win in the 2008 BL&G Grand Final capped off a tremendous unconquered season for the Magpies. Celebrating there 100th year as a club, they dominated the competition from the outset.  Undefeated at the end of the minor round, they turn a 10-point half time deficit in the second semi final into a 20 point victory with former VAFA footballer Andrew Quinn kicking four second half goals.  After slotting through eight goals to three in the opening term of the season decider at Willaston oval, the Magpies were always in control on Grand Final day.

Although their opponents, the previous two years’ premiers, Barossa District got to with a couple of goals in the second quarter, the accurate 14.1 score at half time displayed the potency of the Tanunda side.  A further six goals in the third term sealed the result and the last quarter become a formality.

After being stranded on 98 goals at the end of the minor round, Alex Kennedy joined an impressive list of Tanunda played who broke the century mark in the second semi final win, before gaining the second annual ‘Hurn Medal’ for his best on ground performance in the Grand Final.

During the year, the club also had five players in the BL&G representative side – Kennedy, Ben Newberry, Luke Wells, Tom Schiller and Andrew Prior, which collected an impressive win over the Hills Football League.  Three of these, Newberry, Prior and Wells were a part of the victorious Murray-Mallee-Barrier-Barossa Zone championships winning side in the Riverland, with both Wells and Newberry making the team of the championships, while Prior didn’t concede a goal playing at full back over this weekend.  Newberry also played state country football in Shepparton, and despite missing two games during the minor round only missed out on the Schluter medal (association best and fairest) by one vote.

This is only to second time is the more than two decades of the amalgamated BL&G competition a team has been undefeated all season. Nuriootpa achieved the same in 1998, beating Tanunda by one point in the Grand Final. Back in 1937, the Magpies recorded their only other undefeated winter.

Brad Taylor wins the Schluter Medal by one vote
Brad Taylor from Gawler Central won the Schluter and Mail  Medals on Monday night for being judged the Fairest and Most Brilliant A-Grade Footballer playing in the Barossa, Light & Gawler Football Association during the 2008 season. He is the first Gawler Central player to win it since they joined the association in 1987 and first since Alf Skuse in 1972 in the Gawler & District League. Gawler Central won the medal five times in the Gawler & District League. The count was run by the B., L. & G. Assn. at the Vine Inn Hotel-Motel, Nuriootpa, with around 290 people attending and guest speaker was former Essendon Coach, Kevin Sheedy.
The Rookie of the Year was won by John Roesler of Angaston and the Senior Colt Footballer of the Year was Charlie Molyneux of Gawler Central.
Brad Taylor also won "The Bunyip" Writers Trophy from Brad Taylor of Kapunda. The inaugural Peter Vivian Coaches Player of the Year was Matt Stelzer, Barossa District. Other Best and Fairest Medal winners were Brett Lydeamore, Nuriootpa Reserves (Barossa News Medal); Aaron Modistach, Nuriootpa Under 17¹s (Central District Football Club Bulldog Medal) and Caleb Edmead, Gawler Central Under 15¹s (Des Shanahan Medal).
The top goalkicking trophies went to Alex Kennedy, Tanunda, with 98 goals in the A-Grade (Barossa Trophies); Leigh Underwood, Tanunda, with 40 goals in the Reserves (John and Elva Falland Trophy); Under 17¹s was Chris Bilney, Gawler Central with 64 goals (J. T. Johnson & Sons Trophy) and Sam Lee, Nuriootpa in the Under 15¹s with 46 goals (Peter Rosenberg Trophy). The Champion Club of the Year was Tanunda and Caleb Edmead, Gawler Central Under 15¹s won the Most Consistent Medal for polling in the most games which was 13 out of 16. Steve Lubcke, Tanunda was named Senior Coach of the Year and Matthew Herrmann, Gawler Central the Junior Coach of the Year.

DRAW AT ANGASTON IN OPENING ROUND

The Barossa season of footy got underway in dramatic style with a draw at Angaston. Inaccuracy arguably cost the Bulldogs victory, with Heath Commane and Darren Sharp named best for Barossa Districts with Daniel Thomas and Gavin Cockram kicking four goals apiece. Michael Danielle (4 goals) was best for Angaston.

Just three points separated Freeling and Nuriootpa at three quarter time before the Redlegs kicked away in the last term to win by 13 points. Coach Scotty Leal kicked five goals, with Troy Haseldine best, while for the Rovers, Ryan Foulis kicked four with Matthew Cragg-Sapsford named their best.

The other two games saw healthy wins for Tanunda and Willaston. At Tanunda, the Magpies defeated Gawler Central by 77 points, with Alex Kennedy kicking eight goals, while at Willaston the homeside beat Kapunda by 43 points, with Les Baker kicking 5 goals.

New Coach for Angaston Panthers

The Angaston Football Club are pleased to announce the appointment of Craig
Hadden as the A-Grade Coach for 2009.

Craig has been the Reserves Coach for the past two years and knows the club
inside out, having been involved as a player and coach for over 20 years.

Craig tied for the A-Grade Best & Fairest with Matthew Doecke in 1998. He
has played 282 A-Grade games to be second on the all time A-Grade games
played list and has kicked 167 goals in A-Grade after making a name for
himself as a fullback.

Craig won the Under 15 Best & Fairest in 1985 and was also the captain. He
captained the Under 17's in 1987, coached Under 17's in 1994 and the Auskick
in 2007.

Due to work commitments when he lived in Sydney he missed out on playing in
the 2003 premiership but now hopes to coach a premiership.
