MT BURR GOES BACK TO BACK

MOZZIES BITE AS PORT MAC HAS THIRD QUARTER SNOOZE

REPORT FROM TERRY WILLOUGHBY - SEPTEMBER 13, 2010

Port MacDonnell made an impressive start against Mt Burr in the Grand Final but their efforts didn’t reap the full reward as they only led by 10 pts at qtr-time. They had confused some of the Mozzies with their tactics and kicked away in the 2nd term to lead by 26 pts at halftime. Ryan Fox and solid Adam Taylor had been good for the Bay along with veteran Matt Martin.

Mt Burr started the 3rd qtr positively with finals hardened men Will Whitty and Adam Wiese prominent in defence and loose across the midfiled. Slowly they pegged back the lead with Nathan Muhovics and coach Mark Kruger driving them forward on many occasions. Port Mac payed dearly for this and gave up a good lead as Mt Burr drew within 9 pts.

In a tight battle in the last quarter the Mozzies added another 4 goals as Port Mac tired. Finals experience played a big part in the win as Mt Burr restricted Port Mac to only a goal and kept play bottled up defensively to win their 14th premiership by 7 pts. Nathan Muhovics won the Stan Jones Medal for best afield for Mt Burr, Mark Kruger was terrific on the ball , Whitty starred at full back, Wiese, Matt Leslie and Peter Agnew also played well. For Port Mac Fox, Taylor, Matt Martin, Rohan Povey and Jordan Murdoch stood out but it was a bitter end for the minor premiers.

MT BURR SET UP REMATCH FOR GRAND FINAL

REPORT TERRY WILLOUGHBY - SEPTEMBER 6, 2010

The impossibly low scores also reduced the MSE prelim final to a slog. Kalangadoo managed 2 goals in the 1st qtr but Mt Burr matched them in the 2nd to hold a 6 pt lead at halftime. Players were barely recognizable and scoring became near impossible but the Mozzies managed to extend their lead to 14 pts by ¾ time. At times the game resembled mud wrestling with players struggling to maintain a foothold in the wet. Good ground level players Mark Kruger and Chris Puiatti were strong performers for Mt Burr and bigger men Whitty and Adam Wiese provided the muscle to get the ball forward or prevent Kalangadoo from getting it. They stood out amongst Mt Burr’s better players. Brian Casey, a good player in any conditions was best for Kalangadoo ahead of Thorn, Bannister and Louis Wakelin.

PORT MAC INTO THE GRAND FINAL

Terry Willoughby reports

Port MacDonnell and Mt Burr went goal for goal in the 1st qtr of the MSE 2nd semi final with the Mozzies taking a narrow 3 pt lead at the change. The 2nd qtr was much the same but Port Mac were kicking straighter and a 7 goal qtr gave them a 3 goal lead at halftime. Mt Burr came back strongly in the 3rd term but over-use of the ball and inaccuracy plagued them. The lead changed hands several times but Port Mac’s straight kicking saw them retain a 5 pt lead at the last change. Mt Burr had used plenty of gas but had little to show for it and 2 brilliant snap shot goals from Port Mac youngster Brodie Murdoch lifted his team and they kicked away with 4 goals to one in the last term when Mt Burr faded. Port Mac through to the grand final by 19 pts. Adam Taylor, Ryan Fox, Ben O’Dine and rugged Paul Bosco all played well for Port Mac. Coach Mark Kruger, prolific ball winner Chris Puiatti and Dylan Gamble in the ruck were best for Mt Burr.

KALANGADOO WIN FIRST SEMI

by Terry Willoughby, Sunday 22 August 2010

The MSE 1st semi final looked a mis-match on paper as Kalangadoo finished 6 games ahead of rival Glencoe on the ladder. The game was played in fine conditions which was a marked contrast to recent weeks. Kalangadoo went to the lead early on but could stamp their authority on the game. They stretched the margin to 28 pts at halftime and seemingly had the game was in their grasp. In the 3rd qtr they dominated play but failed to put the score on the board and Glencoe came alive with quick goals just before 3qtr time and bring the margin back to 12 pts. Kalangadoo looked set for a comfortable win with a couple of quick goals and go to 20 pt lead but again Glencoe responded but in the end Kalangadoo took control to win by 27 pts in a game spoilt by poor kicking and handball skills. Better players for Kalangadoo were Matt Doody who booted 4 goals, Brian Casey , Jon Mules and Tim Ellis. Glencoe were kept in the game through the efforts of Matt Sinkunas, ruckman Mark Kieselbach and Trent Hawke.

TOP FOUR SET AS GLENCOE LIMP IN

Monday 16 August 2010

Glencoe regained a spot in the MSE top four with a 56 point win over Robe but it was hardly a win that will have their opponents quaking for next weeks semi-final. Robe who have been in the bottom three all season hardly gave a yelp and Glencoe went to a 4 goal lead by qtr time. Conditions made scoring difficult and Glencoe stretched the margin to 52 pts with a qtr to play but Robe offered no resistance and just played for the season to end. Tory Weaver, Trent Hawke and Tom Edwards were Glencoe’s best and Leo Sharaf booted 4 goals.

Hatherleigh defeated Tantanoola by 17 pts in a game the meant little as both sides finished in the bottom three.

Nangwarry had plenty to play for but not enough talent to play with against Port MacDonnell. The top side raced to a big lead early and were never threatened from there. Nangwarry goaled only once after halftime as Port Mac slammed through 12 to romp in by 93 pts and keep the double chance. Smith, Ben O’Dine and Adam Taylor were best for Port Mac. Kongorong offered spirited opposition to Mt Burr in a quest to claim 4th spot and only trailed narrowly at half and ¾ time but couldn’t withstand Mt Burr’s greater depth in the finish as the Mozzies booted 5 last qtr goals to win by 24 pts. Coach Mark Kruger played a fine game to boot 8 goals and had good support from Nathan Muhovics, D Bowering and Chris Puiatti.

Next Sundays 1st semi-final is between Kalangadoo and Glencoe.

FOURTH SPOT STILL TO VIE FOR - Round 17 wrap with Terry Willoughby

Sunday 8 August, 2010

With the top 3 spots in MSE football sewn up the only interest remains for 4th. Glencoe are best placed to regain it although they were again soundly beaten, this time by Mt Burr. Brilliant displays by coach Mark Kruger and small man Clint Gallio who booted 5 goals each severely tested Glencoe. The Mozzies charged to a big lead after an 8 goal burst in the 2nd qtr. Dylan Gamble, Peter Agnew and rugged on-baller Chris Puiatti were others to do well as Mt Burr tuned up for finals with a 70 pt win. Matt Sinkunas booted 5 goals for the losers and coach Adam Price tried hard but 4th spot appears to be offering only a token finals appearance.

Down at the bottom of the ladder Hatherleigh doubled a disinterested Robe’s score to win by 51 pts.

Port MacDonnell smashed Tantanoola by 131 pts but it should have been much more as they were very inaccurate in front of goals.

Kongorong’s brief flirtation with the top four ended when Kalangadoo defeated them comfortably by 53 pts. Matt Ellis returned to top form and booted 7 goals but it was clever left-footer Michael Durbidge doing most of the damage around half forward. He booted 4 goals and Kongorong couldn’t contain him. The contest was over by qtr time as Kalangadoo booted 8 goals to nil and strolled to a 53 pt lead. Ben Walker and Brian Casey won plenty of kicks around the stoppages and midfield. Kongorong’s best were Kallum Saffin and Riordan Walker whilst Tyson Ploenges booted 6 goals.

INTEREST HOTS UP FOR FIFTH SPOT
Terry Willoughby reports on Round 16 - August 1, 2010

Glencoe had a big chance to return to the top four in MSE football when they led Kalangadoo by 10 pts at ¾ time. The Murphies had held the lead throughout most of the middle qtrs and an upset looked likely. The conditions had been desperate for most of the game as indicated by the low scores and Kalangadoo’s kicking was poor but although their accuracy didn’t improve they controlled play in the last qtr. Glencoe failed to score in final qtr and Kalangadoo added 3-7 to win narrowly by 15 pts.

Brian Casey, a classy player in any conditions starred for Kalangadoo ahead of Michael Durbidge and Jason Bannister. Glencoe’s miserable last qtr kept them out of the top four. Tom Kosch, Brad Gosden and Matt Sinkunas were their best.

Mt Burr thrashed Hatherleigh by 107 pts. The Mozzies were never in danger with many players lining up to kick goals. Better players were Chris Piuatti, coach Mark Kruger and Clint Gallio who gave Mt Burr the dominance around the mid-field and stoppages. Nangwarry crept back into the four with an 8 goal win over bottom placed Tantanoola but they have a bye to contend with as well as a poor percentage and need luck to stay in. Tantanoola are probably wishing they had a bye or two to end a season of misery.

Port MacDonnell were challenged strongly by Robe in the 1st half and only had a narrow 2 pt lead. They gradually drew clear in the third qtr when they booted 5 goals to one as the Robe challenge faded. The final qtr was a formality with Robe having nothing to play for and Port Mac fine tuning for the finals they moved clear by 46 pts. Will McDonald was again their best, Ben O’Dine, Adam Taylor and Jordan Murdoch also played well. Tom Mount, Ben Parish and Dylan Coxon kept Robe in the game for a long time but most fell away in the 2nd half.

PORT MAC SPRAY THE MOZZIES
Report from Terry Willoughby on Round 15 (Sun 25 July 2010)

Top of the ladder Mt Burr copped an unexpected beating from 2nd placed Port MacDonnell in the MSE. From the start they had Mt Burr chasing with all of their big guns firing. Port Mac outscored the Mozzies in every qtr with only the 3rd being any where near close. Mt Burr’s major goal-kickers were kept to modest scores whilst Port Mac had a production line of eleven goal-kickers that couldn’t be contained. The Bay boys led by 30 pts at the last change and were never seriously challenged in the last qtr to win by 42 pts. Steve Noble and follower Will McDonald again led the best players and the Murdoch brothers Brodie and Jordan, sons of former Norwood wingman Roger, booted 5 and 3 goals respectively. It may have been a timely wake-up call for the Mozzies who were best served by rugged on-baller Chris Puiatti and Nathan Muhovics. Kongorong tipped a disappointing Glencoe out of the top 4 with an emphatic 46 pt win. The Murphies form of late has been anything near convincing and Kongorong made a good start to lead by 35 pts at the long break. Glencoe never recovered and the margin widened as Kongorong finished strongly. Bronson Saffin was named best for the Hawks but ruckman Scott Fleming gave his on ball players plenty of opportunities, Brad Cordy and Riordan Walker were also solid performers. Glencoe struggled to make an impression with only Brad Gosden, Mark Keiselbach and Tory Weaver offering much resistance. Kalangadoo had an easy win over lowly Hatherleigh and but for inaccuracy would have won by more. Tim Ellis booted 10 goals in the 78 pt win. Hatherleigh were only going through the motions. Nangwarry looked set to claim 4th spot on the ladder when they led Robe by 32 pts at ½ time and still seemed to have control of the game at the last change although the lead had been reduced to 20 pts. However in a last qtr burst Robe booted 9 goals to one and raced away to win by 17 pts and just about kill off Nangwarry’s hopes of a finals berth. Dylan Coxon was best a-field for Robe ahead of Tom Mount and Jaryd Dawson, Phil Smith finished with 5 goals. Jason Manninen and Ricky Lindner were Nangwarry’s best but the fadeout was costly.

ROUND 14 report from Terry Willoughby (Sun 18 July 2010)

Big winning margins were the feature of all games in the MSE with the smallest being 12 pts. Kalangadoo appeared to be in control over Port MacDonnell when they held a 15 pt lead at the last change. Port Mac however kept the Magpies to a solitary goal and stormed home with 5 of their own to win. The unhealthy reliance continued with Will McDonald and Steve Noble booting 3 goals each and being high in the best along with Ben O’Dine. Kalangadoo’s best were captain Jon Mules and Brian Casey but the fade out in the last qtr was costly.

Mt Burr slaughtered fifth placed Nangwarry by 150 pts to emphasize the gap between top and even 4th. Adam Wiese booted 13 goals against the hapless Nangwarry defence and coach Mark Kruger got 6 but it was scarcely a training run let alone a contest.

Hatherleigh had their best win last week but lapsed again when Kongorong crushed them in the 2nd half to win easily by 77 pts. Tantanoola had a rare win when the led throughout against an insipid Robe. Young Jack Gregory at full forward gave Tantanoola something to aim at and finished with 9 goals as his team romped in by 71 pts. Dylan Coxon was the best in a poor Robe effort.

GAP WIDENS AS TOP TEAMS CRUSH ALSO RANS

by Terry Willoughby (Mon 12 July 2010)

The top teams just keep rolling along in the MSE whilst the horrors continue for Tantanoola. Mt Burr toyed with Tantanoola from the start, piling on goals at will. Coach Mark Kruger bagged 9 goals for the Mozzies, Nathan Muhovics and Andrew Ferguson dominated around the ground as Mt Burr treated Tantanoola with contempt to win by 153 pts.

Kalangadoo also had a percentage booster. They demolished final 4 contender Nangwarry by 187 pts and this emphasizes the gulf between the top 3 and the rest. Michael Durbidge and Tim Ellis had a picnic up forward, kicking 8 and 7 goals respectively. Jon Mules, Brian Casey and Matthew White roamed around the ground to pick up possessions with scarcely any opposition. Nangwarry, who managed only one goal for the game, need to regroup quickly if they want to play in finals.

Hatherleigh caused an upset by easily beating 4th placed Glencoe by 69 pts. It was the Eagles best win in a season marked by some heavy losses. Eleven individual goal-kickers made Glencoe’s job of plugging gaps even harder. Simon Beggs, Brett Sneath and Saxon Ellis starred for the Eagles. Glencoe were extremely disappointing with many players hardly sighted.

Port MacDonnell had a tough battle against Kongorong in a low-scoring affair and only scraped in by 9 pts. Conditions were fairly rugged at the bay and scoring was difficult. Port Mac had the biggest lead of the day at ¾ time of 19 pts and had to hold off the determined Hawks in the last qtr. Ben O’Dine, Will McDonald and veteran Matt Martin had a touch of class on their opposition and held Port Mac together when Kongorong threatened.

ROUND TWELVE REPORT FROM TERRY WILLOUGHBY

Ladder leader Port MacDonnell were always under the pump against Glencoe after a slow start. The Murphies who were just hanging to 4th by a thread started strongly and raced to 30 pt lead at qtr time. Port Mac made no headway and still trailed by 32 at half-time. Glencoe appeared to be fading as Port Mac got on top with 7 goals to one and hold a 5 pt lead at ¾ time. With the game in the balance and top four spot at stake the Murphies responded with a strong last qtr and held Port Mac to just one goal to win by 10 pts. Tory and Jace Weaver were lively on the forward for Glencoe and booted 5 and 3 goals respectively, Anthony Cary, Brad Gosden and Trent Hawke played with great determination to keep their opponents quiet. Ben O’Dine, Will McDonald and Matt Fox gave everything for Port Mac but many were out of touch.

Kalangadoo crushed lowly Tantanoola by109 pts with Tim Ellis booting 10 goals. Robe were competitive for 3 qtrs against Mt Burr but never had enough talent to mount a serious challenge. Robe trailed by 29 pts at the last change but Mt Burr blew them away with a 9 goal finish to win easily by 73 pts. Adam Weise booted 8 goals, coach Mark Kruger also kicked 4 in an influential game around the packs, Andrew Ferguson and Chris Puiatti were strong players all day. Jimmy Wasson, Ben Parish and Dylan Coxon tried hard for Robe who were over-run at the end.

Nangwarry kept their finals hopes alive with a 4 point win over Kongorong. They led by 14 pts at ½ time but saw that lead vanish in the 3rd qtr when Kongorong booted 5 goals. Nangwarry finished a little better than Kongorong to win narrowly. Pat Perry, Matt Fatchen and Ben Dinnison with 5 goals were best for Nangwarry. Riordan Walker and unlikely goal-kicker John Simkin with 5 kept Kongorong alive most of the game.

BIG BATTLE IN THE TOP THREE IN THE MID SOUTH EAST

ROUND 11 NOTES BY TERRY WILLOUGHBY.....Sun June 27, 2010

The top three teams in MSE football continue to have their private battle for top spot with two of them having comfortable wins whilst the other, Mt Burr had a bye. Kalangadoo led throughout against Robe without ever extending themselves. At half-time the Magpies held a 22 point lead although Robe had numerous chances but failed to put scoreboard pressure on Kalangadoo. Brian Casey starred for Kalangadoo and had strong support from Matt White and Ben Walker and Matt Ellis’s 4 goals ensured he stayed on top of the goal-kicking list. Robe were kept in the game through the work of Jakob Wood, ruckman Dylan Coxon and lively Jimmy Wasson but Robe will rue seeing so many chances wasted.

Bottom sides Kongorong and Tantanoola have no hope of playing in finals and this game was indicative of that with Kongorong winning narrowly by 15 points. Premiership aspirant

Port McDonnell made short work of Hatherleigh, thumping the disappointing Eagles by 97 points. Adam Taylor, ruckman Will McDonald and talented youngster Jordan Murdoch all played well but Port Mac had the game wrapped up by half-time when they led by 61 points. Hatherleigh are another of the bottom four who have no chance of playing in finals.

Glencoe missed a golden opportunity to entrench themselves in 4th spot but conceded a 36 pt lead to Nangwarry by qtr time. Nangwarry still led at half-time but the margin had been cut to 12 points. The Saints kept their season alive during the 3rd qtr and at the last change looked safe with a 23 pt lead. Glencoe sensed the danger and fought back strongly with 5 goals to one but in the end fell short by 4 points. Experienced Pat Perry and coach Ricky Lindner starred for Nangwarry with veterans Jason Manninen and Vesa Virtanen lending strong support. Glencoe’s slow start means they are now joined on equal pts in a battle for 4th. Their best were Shaun Watson, Nick Cory and big Alistair Scott.

ROUND TEN WRAP WITH TERRY WILLOUGHBY

In the MSE top sides Kalangadoo and Mt Burr went goal for goal through the 1st half with neither team able to gain any advantage but it was Kalangadoo who led narrowly by 8 pts. The 2nd half was a marked contrast as Mt Burr blitzed the Magpies with a 7 goal to one 3rd qtr and raced to a 27 pt lead. They had all the momentum and finished with another 8 goal burst to sink Kalangadoo by 74 pts. Sam Laucirica was best a-field for Mt Burr and small men Mark Kruger and Clint Gallio were too good around the goal-front and finished with 5 and 4 goals each. Kongorong and Robe had a close tussle for 3 qtrs before Kongorong drew clear to win by 21pts. Robe could only score one goal after ½ time and that won’t win many games. Despite the win Kongorong don’t represent a threat to the top 4. Glencoe led all-day against lowly Tantanoola and won comfortably by 35 pts. They kicked straighter and had more dangerous forwards who converted most of their chances. Jace Weaver, Leo Sharaf and Brad Gosden were best for Glencoe. Coach Jason Rowe was again Tantanoola’s best. Nangwarry had a narrow 7 pt win over Hatherleigh who wasted many chances by kicking only 2 goals from ten scoring shots in the last qtr.

ROUND 9 WRAP WITH TERRY WILLOUGHBY (June 6, 2010)

Hatherleigh relished the opportunity to get a break on fellow wooden-spoon candidate Tantanoola. The Eagles led throughout and withstood a brief fight-back in the 3rdqtr to take control in the last and win by 39 pts. Dave Green had his best game in a long-time to kick 5 goals for the winners. Robe had Phil Smith firing at full-forward to bag 9 goals as the Roosters played all over a disappointing Glencoe. Robe held a commanding lead of 43 pts at the main break and didn’t ease up. They outscored the Murphies in every qtr. Dylan Coxon dominated in the ruck and around the ground, Jimmy Wasson and Jaryd Dawson excelled at ground level. Port MacDonnell had no trouble in defeating Nangwarry. They had too much talent on every line and Nangwarry were under siege from the start as Port Mac had many avenues to attack. Youngster Brodie Murdoch booted 5 goals and along with his brother Jordan was high in the best players with Steve Noble and Ben O’Dine. Veteran Matt Tilby was again Nangwarry’s best but they were belted by 76 pts. Second placed Mt Burr started well against Kongorong and led comfortably at 1/2 time when they looked set for an easy win. The Hawks mounted a serious 3rd qtr challenge and fought their way to a one pt lead at the last change. Mt Burr were shaken up and responded well in the final qtr to come away and win by 22 pts. On-ballers Chris Puiatti and Mark Kruger worked hard all day around the ground for Mt Burr, Dylan and Scott Gamble played and Scott Bevan was a reliable spearhead to kick 5 goals. Scott Fleming won the rucks for Kongrong, Nick Ham defended well and Brad Cordy tried hard to keep his side in the contest. The competition appears to be a 3 team war with Kalangadoo, Port Mac and Mt Burr three games clear at the top of the ladder.

WINS FOR THE TOP THREE - Terry Willoughby reports (May 31, 2010)

The top 3 teams in MSE football all had wins that suggest they are a cut above the rest in the competition. Mt Burr overcame an early challenge from Glencoe when they took control in the 2nd qtr. On-ballers Chris Puiatti and Mark Kruger won plenty of the ball and defenders Peter Guyett and Nathan Muhovics cut off most attacks. The Mozzies had more forwards able to kick goals which proved decisive in the finish and they won by 43 points. Glencoe’s poor kicking also contributed to their loss. Kalangadoo were quickly on top of Kongorong and led by 33 pts at 1/2time. The Magpies maintained their dominance through the 2nd half with 40 year old Michael Jones getting his usual mountain of kicks, Michael Durbidge finished with 6 goals and Ryan Roulstone 5 as they caused havoc for the Kongorong backmen. Kalangadoo won easily by 55 points. Port MacDonnell demolished Tantanoola by 133 pts. They were rarely challenged and held a 77 pt lead by 1/2time. Will McDonald was best a-field for Port Mac and Marc Dalton booted 8 goals. Jack Gregory booted four of Tantanoola’s 6 goals but was starved of chances most of the day. Hatherleigh came from 4 pts down at the long break to defeat Robe by 13 points in a close but not high standard game. Neither side is likely to figure in the finals.

NO VICTORY FOR GLENCOE’S CENTURY CELEBRATION

Round 7 report from ABC's Terry Willoughby

Kalangadoo might have only been a guest at the game to celebrate Glencoes’ 100th year but they proved to be real party-poopers. A large crowd witnessed the game and Kalangadoo took control from the start and bolted to a 30 point lead in the 1st quarter before Glencoe booted 3 late goals to trail by 14 points. The Murphies struggled to stay in touch with their arch-rivals and forwards Peter Richardson, in his 1st game was causing plenty of damage and Michael Durbidge slotted through 6 and 4 goals each. Kalangadoo had the game well in its’  keeping at ½ time with a lead of 34 pts. Glencoe briefly raised their supporters hopes in the 3rd qtr when they closed the margin to 21 pts but it was not to be their day. Kalangadoo again controlled play in the final qtr and won easily by 30 pts. Richardson was named best a-field. Jon Mules, Jason Bannister and Matt White were others to do well in a strong performance. Glencoe struggled to make any impression but coach Adam Price and mid-fielder Matt Sinkunas played well in a beaten cause.

Port MacDonnell had a battle to shake off lowly Robe and only managed to draw clear in the last qtr. Robe kept the pressure on from the start with Ben Parish outstanding, Andrew Everett and Scott Sawyer were also in the action but they just couldn’t get enough score on the board. Port Mac almost threw away their chances by kicking 3goals 9 in the 3rd term but they were having much more of the play as Robe started to struggle. They outscored Robe, 3 goals to two in the last qtr to run winners by 17 pts but not impressively. Reliable Wil McDonald stood out for Port Mac and consistent Steve Noble and Matt Martin held the team together.

Mt Burr snuffed out an early challenge from Hatherleigh and then moved into a relentless mode to crush the Eagles by 89 pts. The Mozzies booted 9 goals to one in the last qtr as resistance vanished. Coach Mark Kruger had his best game with the Mozzies and finished with 7 goals and veterans Adam Wiese and Scott Bevan booted 5 a piece. Rugged on-baller Chris Puiatti and Clint Gallio  were in control around the packs. Hatherleigh’s better players early in the game were swamped after qtr-time with only Tylah Saunders and Dale Fabris managing to be solid 4 qtr contributors. Nangwarry held a big lead at ½ time and they  appeared set for big win but Tantanoola slowly closed the gap. Nangwarry’s suspect stamina started to show early in the last qtr but they had enough experience to see it out and win by 20 pts. Brett Lindner played a fine leaders game and booted 4 goals with good support from Jason Manninen and Vesa Virtanen. Tantaanoola will rue their poor start which left them playing catch up football all day.

PORT MAC LOSES, ROBE FINALLY BREAK THROUGH

ROUND 6 REVIEW BY TERRY WILLOUGHBY

Top of the MSE ladder team Pt Macdonnell stumbled to a big loss against Mt Burr. The Mozzies took control from the start with Adam Weise kicking 9 goals and Scott Bevan 7 proving too good for a number of opponents. Port Mac had no answers as Mt Burr finished them off with a 7 goal last term to win by 58 pts. Dylan Gamble and Taylor Redden also starred in the Mozzies win. Steve Noble, Ryan Fox and Damien O’Dine tried to stem the tide but Port Mac were disappointing.

Glencoe defeated Kongorong by 29 pts in an uninspiring game. Glencoe trailed by 10 pts at half time but were much stronger and kept Kongorong to just 2 second half goals whilst they added eight. Veterans Ali Scott, Matt Sinkunas and coach Adam Price were best for Glencoe and Tory Weaver managed 5 goals.  Wes Milne, Kallan Saffin and Scott Fleming played well for the Hawks but the rest faded badly.

Robe’ good form continued when they disposed of Nangwarry by 34 points. The Roosters led throughout and despite a goal-less last term were never in danger. Kalangadoo quickly returned to the winners list against a more competitive Hatherleigh. A greater spread of talent stretched Hatherleigh’s resources and gradually the Magpies took control. John Mules and classy Brian Casey led the way and persistent Ben Walker kept driving the Magpies forward. Hatherleigh were still in the game at 3/4 time but Kalangadoo finished them off quickly with six last quarter goals.

MID SE WRAP ROUND 5 BY TERRY WILLOUGHBY

Robe and Tantanoola were opposed and it was Tantanoola who broke through. The scores were almost level at ½ time but the Tigers forged clear in the 3rd quarter and then held on to win by 20 points. Jason  Rowe, Tant’s coach played a fine leader’s game ably backed by Tyson McGrath and Tom Agnew. Robe paid the penalty for a 3rd quarter lapse. Jay Zeuner, Ryan Dew and Ben Parish were their best. Hatherleigh, another poor performer also cracked it for a much needed win with a 12 point victory over a disappointing Kongorong. Mt Burr with the aid of straight kicking had just enough talent to outlast Nangwarry by 11 points. The game was close all day with the Mossies always in front but it was not a convincing win. Dylan Gamble and Mark Kruger stood out for Mt Burr and veteran Matt Tilby was again best for Nangwarry. Port MacDonnell won the battle of the undefeated teams with a 27 point over Kalangadoo. The Bay led by only 4 points at ½ time but gradually drew clear from there on. Their defence forced many errors on the highly rated Kalangadoo forward line which kicked very inaccurately. Will McDonald starred for the Bay along with skilled youngster Jordan Murdoch, recruit Rohan Povey and veteran Matt Martin were other good players. Strongman Matt Krammins, Jason Bannister and Brian Casey did all they could to lift the Magpies but many players were down.

In the MSE at least Kongorong were competitive but they still fell short when Nangwarry finished strongly to win by 15 pts. The ageing Saints have been battling to see out games recently but with Adam Stewart, 5 goals, giving them some spark up forward they got more from the Lindner brothers, Brett and Rick around the packs to have a narrow win. Port MacDonnell kept their unbeaten record intact with  a 30 pt win over Glencoe. Glencoe were held scoreless in the 1st qtr whilst Port Mac piled on 6 goals. From thereon the game was almost even but the damage had been done. Poor kicking for goal did not do Glencoe’s cause any good especially as the Weaver boys were well covered. Steve Noble, Wil McDonald and veteran Matt Martin played well for Port Mac whilst Glencoe struggled to have many good 4 qtr players. Ladder leaders Kalangadoo blew Tantanoola  away by qtr time when they booted 7 goals to none. The Magpies were never threatened from then on and cruised to an easy 103 pt win. On the forward line the Ellis brothers, Matt and Tim tortured their opponents to finish with 8 and 7 goals respectively, Ben Walker and Matt White picked up kicks all around the ground with no pressure on them. Tantanoola look very vulnerable and only coach Jason Rowe stood out, the rest were very poor and Tantanoola may be in for some torrid weeks ahead. Mt Burr had no trouble with Robe but just couldn’t put a large score on the board. They had much more of the play but just lacked the fire-power of recent years. Scott Bevan finished with 5 goals and Guyett, Ferguson and Dylan Gamble were amongst the better players. Robe only flashed into the game when the Mossies eased down in the last qtr. Dylan Coxon on the ball again battled strongly but lacked support with only Wood, Jess and Ryan Dew having an impact for Robe.

HATHERLEIGH'S SLIDE CONTINUES by Terry Willoughby

Hatherleigh’s fall to the bottom continued when Glencoe crushed them by 48 pts. The margin could have been far greater but for inaccuracy, they had 40 shots to 18. The Weaver boys, Tory 6 goals and Jace 3 did the damage near goal. Adam Price used his strength to great advantage around the packs to be Glencoe’s best ahead of Trent Hawke, Dane Paproth and Matt Sinkunas. Hatherleigh’s best in a poor effort were Brett Sneath and Matt Faulkner. Kalangadoo had an unconvincing 29 pt win over Nangwarry in a low scoring game, the poor skill level kept the scores close for three qtrs and defences were on top. The reigning premier then got their act together and finished strongly with 5 goals to win comfortably. Brian Casey showed out to be best on ground for the winners, Jason Bannister and Louis Wakelin also played well. Port McDonnell thrashed  close rivals Kongorong by 122 pts. They booted 20 goals to a solitary major. Whilst Pt Mac had many good players, Matthew Martin, Ryan Fox and Steve Noble being the best of them Kongorong’s were non existent. Mt Burr made short work of Tantanoola with an easy 93 pt win.

KALANGADOO SHAKES OFF ROBE - MID SE footy wrap by Terry Willoughby

Reigning MSE premier Kalangadoo took all day to shake off  Robe and only edged ahead late in the last qtr. Inaccuracy may have cost Robe dearly but you must make the most of your chances. Kalangadoo finished with 7 last qtr goals and had dangerous forwards in Aaron Ilsley, 5 goals, Matt and Tim Ellis, 4 and 3 goals respectively. Matt Gribben and Louis Wakelin were named best. Big man Dylan Coxon was best for Robe ahead of Jakob Wood and the consistent Jimmy Wasson and Ryan Dew. Hatherleigh’s 2009 slump continued when a revamped Port McDonnell thrashed them by 101 points. The Eagles trailed by 5 goals at ½ time but were scarcely sighted after as the Bay boys piled on 19 goals in the 2nd half. James McGregor around the midfield, Wil McDonald in the ruck and Ben O’Dine were unstoppable whilst forwards Marc Dalton, Jason Dawe and Glenn Fry swooped on every chance like a hungry seagull to contribute 17 goals between them. Hatherleigh had battlers only in Matt Faulkner and Brett Sneath and another dark winter looks likely. Glencoe trailed Nangwarry by 14 points at qtr time but gradually gained control from there on. Tory Weaver, 6 goals and brother Jace 2, were effective forwards but Shaun Watson was too classy for several opponents. Anthony Cary and Matt Sinkunas were also in good form for Glencoe. Veteran Matt Tilby was best for Nangwarry whose ageing team might struggle to maintain its lofty status of recent years. In the final game Kongorong and Tantanoola went goal for goal and each looked likely winners at some stage. Trailing by 17 pts at ½ time, Tantanoola charged to the lead by 2 pts at ¾ time but couldn’t maintain the effort and Kongorong despite poor kicking near goal had more play in the last qtr to sneak home by 9 pts. Tyson Ploenges booted 9 goals in a best afield performance for Kongorong, he was supported by Sean Farrell, Brett Sutherland and Scott Fleming. Robbie Versace finished with 7 goals for Tantanoola but they lacked the number of good players that Kongorong had.
