Mid West League Preliminary Finals Preview

September 1, 2010

Premiership aspirations remain alive for some, and pass for others this weekend as MWFL heads to Wirrulla. For the winners, the expectation on hope that comes with a Grand Final build up, and the losers the despair of missing out at the final hurdle.  After 2nd Semi Finals matches at Elliston, all teams will be reminded that finals is a step up in desperation and the need to convert chances when they present.  No more second chances now.

A Grade – West Coast Hawks(2) vs Elliston (3)

Oh what may have been as the Hawks lost in the last gasp last week, hitting the post, and having a shot touched before sailing through just before the siren. Did they have an ace in their hand that wasn’t played in Dale Montgomerie when Dillon Mont couldn’t line up?

The numbers-: Hawks have the best finals win record of all Mid West Clubs, winning 58.33% of the finals they have played. Elliston have fared less well, winning 43.48%. A closer look at the good and bad of the figures sees the Hawks with a 25% win record in 4 Preliminary Final appearances, whereas Elliston have 100% win record from four finals appearances, perfect!  Are there clues here???.  These two met in the Grand Final last year with a strong confident Hawks outfit winning well, but closer matches this year, two to one in Hawks favour.

West Coast boys will be savage after last week’s loss in a close game, but that is gone, Elliston present a different challenge altogether, with their tall forwards and physical mid field.

As was covered last week, the Hawks have been challenged more than usual this year with the loss of players through injury or unavailability, and to that end last weeks hit out will see them better for the run.  Dillon Montgomerie and Luke Fiebig should return pending fitness tests. Elliston also had a close encounter in their 1st Semi Final, but they have had an extra week to regroup, and will also strengthen their side with the return of the grand old gladiator Steve Agars, plus the height and leap of Jacob Watson.

The Roosters have finished the season at full steam, winning away games well, and look like they are on the up.  They boast a great forward line built around man-mountain Glen Tonkin and the mercurial Tom Rumbelow.  These gentlemen have posted 51 and 48 goals respectively in the minor round, and will take some holding.  Once again the task will go to ever reliable Derick Freeman, who enhanced his reputation restricting leading goalkicker Pym to one last week. James Almering continues to impress with a great game last week and likely to have the task on Tom Rumbelow.  Welcome back to Tod Romanowycz, who adds bite to the Roosters forward or midfield. New Hawk utility Graham Ross snuck quietly into the Bay looking for a game, but now has the attention of the Mid West world with three excellent games in a row.

The mid fields could decide the game, both star studded and fast.  Ben Hurrell, Andrew McLeod, Luke Northcott and Robert Pickett are hard at the contest, then quick on the turnover.  Similarly the hard working West Coasters excel in close, Cameron, Dillon, Kirk Montgomerie, Aiden Whitford, and “DJ” Johnson will all work through the area, and their exquisite in close skills should see plenty of ball heading to the blue and gold end. Darren Guidera and Joe Danis will contest the ruck against Josh Williams and Jacob Watson, which will be entertaining to witness.

The Hawks like to spread goals amongst the midfield and forwards, and cause headaches for all defending teams.  Joseph McInnis has settled into senior football well and is an opportunist, and “Axe” Brown will be the key target again.

Two well matched sides, and whilst the Hawks have had the better of the season, they had a tough grinding match to endure in the 2nd Semi, where the Roosters are refreshed, poised and confident. Expect a close tussle to half time, I  expect that the Hawk work rate and fitness levels may just wear Elliston down in the end.  The close hard standard of finals football is definitely to the Elliston liking however and remember, the time proven Rooster has the Preliminary Final results on the board.

Reserves – Wirrulla (2) vs Wudinna United (3)

The Bombers were stunned early in the 2nd Semi and will come out here with a full head of steam against a full strength Magpie line up.  Decision to be made at Wirrulla selection table, do we risk non top 15 listed players?  Grand Final in waiting in the A’s!  This decision is a non event in Magpieland with their League team looking on from the sidelines.  A couple of goals to Wirrulla at last meeting and they have had the edge in recent times.  The Bombers are well served by a good mix of experience and youth.  The forward line is potent with Peter Gum and Clint Olsen being big targets, Dillon Cabot around the centre and Saul Webb know how to get their hands on the ball.  Adam Duffield uses the ball well, and Johnny Barrett always plays devastating football against Wudinna United. Big “Mars” Slattery plays both ends of the ground equally well, and Matthew “Gibbo” is in outstanding form.  For the Maggies, Brent Wedding must get over the disappointment of his AFL team’s lowly finish and concentrate on what he does best, win games for his club.  Shaine Dupree is a leader and directs traffic, newcomer Josh Mitchell is enjoying freedom in this competition.  Scott Williams provides the run over centre and long goals for the crowd.  Ash Barns is a big target forward and “Stinger” Nettle provides a cool head and know how to ensure the game is played on the Maggies terms.

Once again a very close contest is expected, and I see the emerging Wudinna United likely victors here, benefiting from a weeks rest and great form going in.  Home ground and crowd will work in the Bombers favour however.

Colts – Wirrulla (2) vs Wudinna United (4)

Always close games between these two and Bombers certainly flew their colours last week, losing narrowly to the Tigers, but losing no respect.  Lachlan Ross was excellent across half back, gathering kicks and marks at will, and Cameron Parker is a dangerous Centre Half Forward with a long left foot kick. Kieran Patterson reads play well in the backline, setting up runners Corey Cabot, Jack Kessel, Zac Thomas. Andrew McEvoy regularly beats much bigger opponents with great skills.  For Wudinna United, will Jonty Seal get back from College?, yes or no will have a big bearing.  Ricky Seal has pace, Cody Boylan, Izaac Boylan, Bradley Jericho all key playmakers and need to get the ball forward quickly. Cameron Douglass runs and runs all day, and will be also pivotal to the result.  On balance and over the season the Bombers have the bigger bodies, but the Maggie mosquito fleet have won many games for them.  Wirrulla will start slight favourites and this will be a great match to start the days action with.

Mid West League Medals

23 August 2010

The 2010 Mid West Football League medal counts were held at Wudinna Oval, with a great crowd in attendance after a close 1st Semi Final tussle between Elliston and West Coast Hawks.  Mid West League has enjoyed an even competition in all grades throughout the year.  The League Medals are voted on separately by the central umpires, each having an independent vote of 3, 2 ,1.  The Mail Medal went down to the last game in the last round, with four players from Wirrulla vs Western Districts game having the ability to win the award from votes accrued.  Izaac Halman lead the count with 36 votes, unfortunately not playing in the game, second Scott Feltus with 35 votes, Tyler Baldock  and Jarrod Parker equal third on 32 votes.

As the final votes were read, Tyler hit the lead with a perfect 3/3 votes for a best on ground performance, with the second preference votes then read, 2/2 to Scott Feltus.  Jarrod did not poll in the game, and so Scott escaped with a well deserved narrow victory in the coveted award by one vote.

Top Pollers were-:

Scott Feltus (Western Districts) - 39 votes, 2010 Mail Medalist

Tyler Baldock (Wirrulla) – 38 votes 2010 Presidents Medal

Izaac Halman (Wirrulla) – 36 votes

Jarrod Parker (Wirrulla) – 32 votes

Kane Sampson (Central Eyre) – 25 votes

Darren Guidera (West Coast Hawks) – 21 votes

Congratulations go to the winners for 2010-:

Mail Medal   Scott Feltus winning his fourth Mail Medal in the Mid West FL, amazingly also having won the Presidents Medal three times as runner up, he joins very elite company in Country Football. In a wonderful season, he also won the Bampton Medal at the Mortlock Shield, best player in the Carnival for a record fifth time, and the Peter Beard Medal for the best EP player at the State Country Championships in Berri.  Taking on the senior coaching role at the Tigers this year has not come at a cost of his on field heroics, where he leads from the front.  Scott is a classic example of what a best and fairest player should be, a gentleman to all, but a fierce compeditor at the bottom of every pack and a motor that just goes all day.

Presidents Medal  (Runner Up Mail Medal) and JV Day Medal  (Best under 21)

Tyler Baldock who was also one of the pre count favorites among punters. Tall and athletic ruckman/ key position player, Tyler has emerged as one of the most influential players in the competition, and has a great future in the game.  Excels at high marking but equally adept when the ball hits the ground.  In the Eyre Peninsula squad this year and has also been a prime mover in Wirrulla’s Minor Premiership.  The club is looking to taking the next step over the next month.

Flow FM Most Valuable Player Award  Jake Bruce of Central Eyre, as picked by clubs recording 3/2/1 in weekly best players.  Jake is a young speedster with the ability to break open games. In EP Squad for first time, and performed well at the Mortlock Shield.  Breath taking speed, and uncanny ability to win the ball in a contest, winding out of trouble untouched.  Slightly built but courageous.

JH McKenna Award  The leading goal kicker this year is Lynton Pym from Wirrulla with 68 goals from 15 games in the minor round, spearheading one of the most lethal attacking forward lines seen in the Mid West.  Lynton has a strong body, and leads quickly, having a good mark and accurate kick for goal.  Originally from Blues FC in the Far West FL, he has relished the key role of full forward, and is certainly well trusted as a go to man by the Wirrulla centerline. Runner Up in the goal kicking this year is Simon Webb from Wirrulla also, having kicked 64 goals and challenging Lynton all the way to the end for this award.

Montgomerie Medal  The peak award the reserves competition was won by Simon Tucker of West Coast Hawks.  Simon is a prolific ball winner, leading the way at the Hawks after two years at Western Districts.  Well known in the competition, Simon has had a big influence on the Hawks top position in the Reserves at the end of the minor round and is highly valued for his influence on developing younger players.  A well deserved award

Montgomerie Medal R/Up  Won by Ben Herangi of Elliston.  The award is well earned for a player who has been a standout for Elliston in the reserves this year.  New to Elliston FC this year, he has quickly settled to becoming a key contributor, also playing several A Grade games. Well built hard ball winner, prepared to run all day.

Lockwood Medal (s)  The Colts Best and Fairest was jointly won by Damon King of Western Districts and Cameron Douglass of Wudinna United.  Both players have dominated in the colts competition, being hard runners and highly skilled, and both have permanent berths in their respective A Grade sides.  Cameron generally plays on the ball, known for running the ball over lines, kicking long goals.  Damon plays either on the ball, or Centre Half Forward/Back, extremely agile, and a great reader of the play.  When playing seniors is not afraid of mixing it with others much larger.

Doug Fox Medal  Matthew Williams of Elliston FC as runner up in the Lockwood Medal.  A strongly built and courageous key position player, has a great future.  Runs hard all day and is a key player in the Elliston side, another who has played good A Grade football this year. Wonderful strong mark and a penetrating kick.

Mid West Football League

1st Semi Final Preview

Wudinna Oval 21 August 2010

The finals are here and the hopes and aspirations of some will pass with the final siren this Saturday.  Finals make injuries seem less severe, as players make themselves available to press for the elusive Grand Final appearance and ultimately the flag. Congratulations to all clubs reaching the finals, a great effort in a keenly contested season

Elliston vs Western Districts

A Grade

Only ten points separated these sides a fortnight ago at Elliston, with the home side in front. This time the venue is neutral with the wide expanses of Wudinna Oval much more to the Tigers liking. The Roosters however flexed their muscle at the ground last week, leaving those in attendance with no doubt that they are very capable and serious about going deep into September.  A weeks rest awaits the winner here, to freshen up and play for the right to a Grand Final.

Western Districts have had a season of all extremes, at their best they can match the best, whilst they have also had times where nothing seemed to come together.  Importantly they are playing their best football now, and are finally achieving near full strength sides.

The Tigers impress with in form forwards Eugene Wauchope and Wade Shepperd providing marking targets, and rarely letting the side down when the ball gets in there quickly. Match this Matthew Carey’s crumbing ability and incoming runners Damien Carey and Reece Dickson, the Tigers look dangerous.  Districts  centerline is one of the best in the business, with coach Scott Feltus, Dylan Beinke, both EP Reps Jarrad Tomney and Shannon Horgan Mortlock players, and excellent young rucks in Todd Payne and Jake James.  Trent Brace is a revelation is defence is one of the clubs better players over the year. Brenton Mudge is in career best form, and looks to be over his arm injury, so will play an important part.  Nathan Hebberman is an inspirational captain, hard and ferocious at the ball, whilst Damon King has gone from a youngster with potential to a first pick A Grade player with a big future.

Elliston started the year with many people tipping them as the team most likely to challenge last years premiers, and when at full strength, they are awesome.  They too are getting key players back at the right time, and they should be rightly confident of their prospects.  Glen Tonkin leads, either in key forward roles or on the ball, and is pivotal to the result of this game.  Jerel Fromm  or Brenton Mudge are players most likely to have the unenviable task of standing him.  Tom Rumbelow is also a key, either up forward or around the centre.  Great to have Tod Romanowycz back in the side and his speed and strength is a huge bonus.  Josh Williams and Dylan Kelsh have had great seasons, and have the athletic ability to excel around the large ground.  Onballers Ben Hurrell, Luke Northcott and Robert Pickett have the running power and contest winning ability to generate plenty of forward opportunites.  A strong back line lead by the reliable Fred Romanowycz, rugged Bill Bascomb and evergreen Steve Agars who is another in excellent form.  Great youngsters Ross Bascomb and Tom Wadsworth have speed and skill to burn.

This game should be a free flowing affair, and both will feel that they have the guns to come out on top.  The Tigers like a possession game chip and run style game, whilst the Roosters like the hard contests and will back themselves to win most of them.  Elliston deserve favourtism to win, and will have benefited by last weeks game on the venue.  Tigers are match hardened by a series of close desperate encounters just to make the finals, so don’t be surprised?

B Grade

Wudinna United v Central Eyre

Local derby between neighboring clubs, and rest assured, no favors are given here. Both have missed the finals in the As and are desperate to fly the flag for their clubs, both have the same benefit of the selection of non top 15 players within the club, and both are playing good football in the lead up to the finals.  Centrals have everyone’s attention with their win last week against the top side West Coast Hawks.  Wudinna United have enjoyed a consistent season, not missing the double chance by much, and appear ready to go.

For the Maggies, boom recruit Luke Nettle looms large, along with veterans Shaine Dupree and Brent Wedding who lead from the front. Scott Andrew in defence needs to direct traffic.  Runners Kev Cummings, Michael Freak Graham walters command the ball and use it well.  The ruckwork of Kym and Liam Tree should see plenty of forward movement to Ash Barns.

The Bulldogs have had a huge month leading into the finals, and will be very confident.  The O'Brien brothers, Craig, Darren and Brett are reunited, all key A Graders in their day and love this type of pressure football.  Keiran Bedding has had a big year along with Nick Berg.  Justin Schultz returns to the side and provides a big marking presence. Tyler Chapman is outstanding, either around the goals or anywhere else he is needed.

Expect a physical contest and perhaps some verbal advice for opponents.  This game will go down to the siren.  Centrals just have the edge on their current form, but another that could go either way on a bit of luck.

Colts

West Coast Hawks v Wudinna United

Congratulations to these sides making the finals, both with good wins from their last game.  West Coast Hawks have won twice and Wudinna United once in earlier games between the two, with both side likely to be full strength.  Hawks have the edge in size but the Magpies have a great band of young runners.  The West Coast Hawks are well served by Joseph McInnis, now playing A Grade also, Lance Appleby who is deadly around goals, Sam Johns, Quinn Mohi Adam Strange all having great years. Max Shaw has the dash and skill to set up attacks, and Shannon Morgil has a big future.  Wudinna United look to their captain Cameron Douglass, also playing great A Grade football.  Jonty Seal will be back in action, along with Reece Boylan.  Cody Boylan, Ricky Seal and Remi North are key men around the contests, Izaac Boylan is dangerous up forward and Bradley Jericho commands the backline.

The Hawks start warm favourite here and should progress, but will be made to work hard for it.

The MWFL League Medal Counts will follow the A Grade match, and is wide open is all grades.  Who will be honored this year, come along and find out.

DECISION MADE REGARDING WEST COAST HAWKS - MAY 28, 2010

An appeal by the West Coast Hawks has been upheld by SANFL CFL with respect to the annulment of their score in last weeks game. The appeal was raised by the Hawks, and submitted to the SANFL for decision with the agreement of both clubs, league executive and also the MWFL Tribunal. Given the appeal being upheld, the two points for the match are now awarded to the West Coast Hawks.

The score is reinstated as follows-:

Round 5 - May 22, 2010

Central Eyre win after Count at Kyancutta

Central Eyre picked up their second win of the season in the Mid West Football League, after a count was called for in their match with the West Coast Hawks on the weekend. Central called for the count in the early seconds of the final term and when the count was made it was found that the Hawks had 19 players on the field. It’s likely that West Coast Hawks may make an appeal, further details of that and any decision should be made by the end of the week. It’s the first count in the League since 2000, when ironically West Coast Hawks were the guilty party on that occasion. Keep an eye of the Latest News page of countryfooty.com.au for further details.
