Each club has won an A Grade premiership in the past nine years, and therefore all know what it takes to get to the ultimate goal. Elliston looks to defend their crown, hard won in last years finals series, but all clubs appear to have a playing list that can go all the way, these early games so important in the overall scheme. Elliston are the reigning premiers rising from bottom the previous year, a wonderful achievement, of which they rightfully should feel very proud. Stellar seasons from Jay Williams and Tom Rumbelow led the way and they will again be looked to. Elliston played so well in the finals last year, others have watched their style of play, where the drive comes from and how dangerous they are around goals, so their challenge will be harder this time around. Ben and Adam Hurrell are wonderful ball getters, with Adam away at school this year so will play less games, Jason Matthews leading the rucks, but just as capably in a key position. Fred and Tod Romanowycz will provide forward line bite. New players to the club include Thomas Bascomb, returning from Lameroo, Adam Haarsma from Cougars in Great Flinders and Kane Tiller from Lock. A key out will be Aaron Hand, a big key position player, who has returned to Andamooka. Stalwarts in Luke Northcott, Rhys Prior and Christian Weetra will ensure that the club stays up and about. No-one travels further on the EP than the Roosters to play football, and this travel issue sees challenges the win away games in the middle of winter, conversely they run a fortress of a home ground, very capably coached by Chad Fleming so expect to see red and white going around in September. West Coast Hawks are the perennial danger, having played in every grand final since 2005, Dillon Montgomerie takes over as coach of a fast and classy outfit. No doubt the off season loss of highly respected club president Brenton Joyce will provide an additional spur to the club. The Hawks are good on every line and boast a depth of talent that other clubs envy. Tyson Mont and Damien Johnson rebound from the backs ensure the forward line of Brenton Bascombe, Darren Brown and Gerard Montgomerie have ongoing opportunities. Aiden Whitford up forward or on the ball, Jake Sargent coming off a great 2012 season are keys. Leg speed abounds, even Kirk Montgomerie is back to full fitness after his summer of romance. The club welcomes Joe Danis back from Roxby Districts, Shaun Day from Gladstone and Kingsley Ware from Koonibba. A mean defence and productive forward line will again see the Hawks challenging for the flag and likely to kick some big scores along the way Central Eyre will feel that their third placing last year perhaps didn’t best reflect their season or their talent, and they would be right. At their best will challenge any side and appear to have the firepower this year to be a genuine threat right through to the last match in September. Great recruits/ returning players include Jared Sampson and Ty McKenna, both premiership players at Borderdowns Tintinara, Nathan Creaser from Mypolonga will boost a side already very well balanced Players such as Wade O Brien, Kane Sampson, Martin Grocke and Damien Mullan have been around for many years and know success. Jake Bruce is outstanding, having cleaned up every award in 2012 including the Mail Medal. Ryan Sampson is a key, winning the tough balls and contests. Clint Winters leg speed and great rebound from Beau Lowe and Tom Freeth. Tyler Chapman kicked plenty of goals last year and was elusive as always. He is likely have some on ball time this year, and his mercurial reading of play and ball handling are magic, even for opposition to appreciate. Another to look for is the emerging Brett McComb, deceptively quick and great potential. The Bulldogs are coached again by Peter Cock, they are fit, have height, strength and speed. So long as they can manage injuries, the red white and blues will be playing very very late into the season! Western Districts continue to be an enigma. So regularly seeing themselves losing the close games, they have found themselves lower on the ladder than they deserve. Always competitive, and missing out to last years premier by a few points see them very close to the mark. Scott Feltus takes the coaching helm again, and he has proven to be very astute, both at the match and trainings. New to the club are Ben Smith from Waybacks, Jeremy Rabig – South Augusta, Warren Smith Sedan Cambrai and Trueman Hoffrichter – Western United. Look to Dylan Beinke, Jesse Hull and Jerel Fromm to provide drive around the middle . Trent Brace and Damien Carey’s run from the backline and the strength of Rohan Hull to steady the ship when the going gets tough. They are well served by Shannon Horgan around the middle, and expect big seasons from Brayden and Damon King. The Tigers like to shorter chip and run game, which opens up scoring opportunities should see them once again playing finals. Wudinna United dropped the first eight games in 2012 before a late season recovery saw them win against all clubs but Central Eyre in the race for a finals berth. Tall timber Eugene Wauchope and Darryl Marshall will test the best defenders, with Troy Klante, Anthony Foster leading the defence. Mark North regularly gets his hand to the ball first in ruck duels and leads the way around the ground. Tyson Jackson has enormous potential, so look for a big year from him, Aaron Lampre and Ashley Michael in the midfield. Regan Petty is a mean defender and Matthew Foster in a very welcome return to the game late 2012. Luke Nettle is in his second year of coaching the club, is astute in his reading of the play and has an enormous passion for the game. The Magpies will be affected by some good young players away at school including Remi North and Izaac Boylan, but also have some great emerging talent in Jack Wilkins and Logan Elliott. Will win and lose games throughout the year, but if they can force a finals berth, seem to play their better football at the right time, and could just challenge right through. Wirrulla was hardest hit with injury and player loss in 2012, but have been active in the off season and expect an improved showing this year. Jason Henderson returns from Balaklava, Russell Erck from Waratahs NT, Jake Adamson-Thain from Mitcham, Shad Smith returning from Elliston, Julian Dickson – Western Districts all recruited this year. Players of the ilk of Craig Johnson in Ruck, elusive Dion Pittaway, Simon Webb, Troy Olsen and Mark Binder up forward, Andrew Bitmead, Chad Guelfi and Darren Mudge all stern defenders who start many forward moves. Matthew Greatbatch has emerged as a great A Grade defender, and Braden Holmes adds skill and poise around the contests. Evan Whillas leads a strong backline, and the run of Robert Holmes and Corey Cabot ensure the ball is heading Wirrulla’s way often. The Bombers are again coached by Peter Holmes, a League stalwart who will get the best from his charges. The Grand Final returns to Elliston this year, and with recent Grand Final regulars West Coast Hawks having ever only won one out of their five finals games at the venue, it sets up for an interesting season. Good Luck to all clubs along the way, winter sport days being so important to our social life on the Eyre Peninsula ELLISTON MAKES HISTORY FIRST MID WEST CLUB TO GO FROM WOODEN SPOON TO PREMIERS by Lawrie Colliver - Sunday 9 September 2012 Elliston took out the 2012 Mid West Premiership, defeating the West Coast Hawks by 41 points at Wirrulla. After a great first term by Elliston where they kicked 4.6 to 2.2 the Hawks bounced back in the second term and at the long break led by four points. In the third term, Elliston put paid to the Hawks comeback and dominated proceedings, adding 6.1 to 0.1 to set up a match winning lead. They finished off the job in the last quarter, breaking a 12 year drought and ending the Hawks run of three consecutive flags. Club President Darryl Huppatz was “over the moon” with the result, saying the win was the result of a lot of hard work. “We had a lot of issues last year, finishing bottom and struggling to field a B grade, so in the off-season the Committee worked very hard. We did some recruiting, the lads had a big pre-season and it has paid off” “We still had our fair share of injuries, using over 50 players in the A Grade this season and it wasn’t until the Grand Final that we actually had our best side on the park. “ Huppatz says it’s a big deal for the small Eyre Peninsula town of just 240 people. “We along with Wirrulla are the only two teams in the competition to not have some sort of amalgamation, so to win the Premiership is great and hopefully will set us up for the future”. Meanwhile Huppatz says the celebrations will last most the week, “Not too many lads went to bed last night and with our Club end of season day today, it’ll be the start of a few big few days”.
