Grand Final Preview

September 6, 2013

A Grade - Central Eyre vs West Coast Hawks
It almost seems fitting that the two bolters through the season will settle the premiership between them, so much at stake, redeeming disappointing 2012 memories for only one of them. What a contest this promises to be after one point separated the sides in the 2nd semi in a true classic.

Firstly a Mid West history lesson: Premierships Central Eyre 6, West Coast Hawks 6, All finals win rate Central Eyre 53.85%, West Coast Hawks 62.5%, both the best amongst all clubs, head to head in 2013, Central Eyre 2 wins, West Coast Hawks 2 wins. A remarkably similar record of the two most successful clubs ever in Mid West. The last three finals games between these two was the recent one pointer, the Hawks by 9 points in last years 2nd semi, and prior to that, the 2007 Grand Final, where the Bulldogs prevailed over an undefeated Hawks by 16 points, at, well in fact it was Elliston.

Always something happening when these two meet, a player count called by Central Eyre in 2010 eventually settled by the SANFL, red and yellow cards, reports, just two proud clubs who will not back off at any stage.

The trip to Elliston is a true neutral venue, but what a finals graveyard it has been for the Hawks, 1 win from 5 games, maybe the fresh ocean fragrance mesmorises them? the Bulldogs faring better with 2 wins from 4 games there.

The Bulldogs have enjoyed the weeks rest and will have a close to full list. Hearts go out to Tom Freeth who broke down with a serious knee injury during the season. A question mark exists over Mark May also with a knee from the reserves match last week, but he will be given every opportunity. The Hawks are less settled with several changes likely, Cody Colbung, Derick Freeman and Joe Danis are all big ins from the preliminary Final side.

Bulldog coach Peter Cock has been thinking long and hard on this one. He has plenty of keys at his disposal, maybe a few road trips for goal kicking practice at the venue may help, second year at the helm of Central Eyre and has them flying. Dillon Montgomerie is in his first year of senior coaching at the Hawks, and brings many years of experience at high levels of country football. Picking the side for a Grand Final is one of the toughest jobs a coach has.

Match ups abound, Wade O Brien, probably the best full forward in the League against the king of full backs Derick Freeman, the tussle alone could decide the game. EP ruckman Dylan Kelsh will have his hands full with the double teaming of Tim Polkinghorne and young gun Brett McComb. Kane Sampson won the Best on Ground Medal in 2007, dominating from Centre Half Forward, and he just continues to lead the way. Travis Brown likely to get the job here and must use his run to make sure Kane has to follow him too. Centreline duals are the elite of the competition, Mail Medalist Jake Bruce will be challenged once again by Dillon Cabot, nothing surer! Not many have an engine to go with Jake for a full game, but Dillon is one of the few. Allow Jake 25 to 30 possessions at Elliston is gifting Central Eyre a premiership cup, and 25 to 30 possessions is a quiet day! Jared Sampson, Clint Winter, Tyler Chapman Micah Van Loon, Lochy Heath are all class, great ball winners and more importantly users. The Hawks boast Dillon Montgomerie, Jake Sargent, Cody Colbung, Joe McInnis, Kirk Montgomerie and Nick Schumann. Both of these midfields are quick and prolific, setting up highly productive forward lines.

Welcome back Steed Sutherland to the Hawks, a match under the belt and his marking ability is a must for Elliston, Ty McKenna has been outstanding all year and will use his leap and judgement to great advantage, probably as Steed’s direct opponent. For the Dogs, Ryan Sampson just loves the hard tough finals games, his in tight ball winning ability is legendary. The strength and experience of Martin Grocke and Matt Beinke will be even more important on the smaller venue. The half back line of the Hawks include Tyson Montgomerie and Damien Johnson, both Grand Final veterans and repel loose opposition attacks quicker than they come in. This is the first line of Hawks attack. Lance Appleby, Jake McEvoy and Marc McEvoy are youngsters whose stars are rising, this is a big occasion for them.

This promises to be one of the very best Grand Finals in recent history, both play an exciting brand of football and both will go to the ground expecting to win. So who will be toasting success?

The Hawks love open spaces, but will need to adapt to the smaller ground, shallow pockets mean less than pin point passes are eaten by defenders of both sides. Central Eyre appear to have an edge in the height and strength stake, this is important in grabbing contested marks. Tackling will be quick and ferocious in the tighter confines, neither of these sides are frightened of this, either giving or taking tougher treatment. In a game where the result will not be known until very late, I suspect the bigger stringer bodies of the more settled Bulldogs to hold the cup aloft at 5pm after an enormous battle.

B Grade Wirrulla v West Coast Hawks
A strong and confident Bomber outfit seems to have been preparing for a Grand Final raid for some time, their side has been reasonably well settled and boasts all the key weapons that are needed at Elliston. Troy Olsen, Craig Johnson, Lynton Pym, Darren Mudge and A Grade premiership players and all in great form at the right time, Andrew Patterson is well experienced in finals and a master tactician at the helm. The hamstring injury of League Montgomerie Medallist is a concern, but he will be given every chance. Saul Webb, Clayton Perry, Daryl/ Ben Lawrie and Andrew Atkinson have been outstanding contributors all year The Hawks are fielding both seniors teams so will play a more regular line up, albeit a very impressive one. The Hawks have the best depth amongst clubs, with Phil Hargans, Darren Brown, Darren Guidera and Simon Tucker all keys. Young runners will be called upon, Sam Johns, Tyson Squire, Kyle Tucker are impressive speedsters, Lachlan and Robert Miller, Dion Trezona and Leroy Johnson take in commanding form.

Wirrulla won through by beating the Hawks in the second semi quite comfortably by about eight goals in the end, but less than a goal in it at the half. This will be closer though, the grand finals always bring out the best. Even a draw between the two during the year underlining closeness, the Bombers however start favourites. They have lead the competition for most of the year and have undoubtedly the strongest reserves forward line set up that we have seen for a while. The Hawks are proud and wont make this easy though

Colts West Coast Hawks v Centra Eyre
Hawks have lead the Colts all year and come into the game with only the one loss for the year whereas the Central Eyre side has been building and improving steadily all season. Both side have players with senior experience and young stars on the rise. The return of Toby Kelly gives the Bulldogs great drive from the middle with Brett McComb one of the best young rucks around. Kane Grocke 55 goals and Taylor Schmucker 37 goals are targets, with Brandon Waters, Brandon North, Mac Heath and Joe OBrien key runners. Connor Dowden and Kayden O Brien are final experienced and will provide great drive, helping out the smaller guys.

Declan Edmonds 28 goals, Jaxon Galliver 30 goals and Harry Goosay 45 goals have heading up a sharp Hawks scoring unit. The strength and knowledge of Noah Legovini, Brody Hutchsion, Tyson Squire will be telling, all having played at senior level this year. Kyle Tucker is a star on the rise, and no Hawk team is complete without a dominant Montgomerie, this one has Zane. Clint Mortimer in ruck will challenge all day.

Both of these sides can win this game, and the early minutes will tell a tale, who is just switched on the most. Hawks may have a edge in the overall body size, for that reason they start as favourties, but the Bulldogs can play football, so no surprises if they come home with the premiership medallion

Second Semi Final - Preview

The Mid West Finals series moves to Kyancutta this weekend at the top teams battle for the first right of entry to the big dance. We already know that there will be new premiers in the A and B Grades this year, so who will enjoy a week’s rest and recuperation, along with perhaps outright premiership favouritism?

West Coast Hawks vs Central Eyre – A Grade
Congratulations must go to the mighty Hawks, another minor premiership, but their celebration silence is deafening, they know the heavy lifting starts now! Hard to remember when two clubs have dominated the competition more than the Bulldogs and Hawks this year, in fact the only time that they have been challenged is when they play each other. So much to like about the football of both clubs, 10 goal quarters seem to come on demand, and so mean defensively. The ledger is two to one Hawks way, no game particularly close, the stakes are much higher now. This time last year the same two clubs lead the competition only to be usurped by a surging Roosters outfit. This disappointment still lives large with both clubs so there is no skylarking amongst players or supporters, they know that one of them will come out of this year with a finals pressure question mark hanging firmly over their head!

Hawks appear much tougher than many younger teams of the past. The free advice to the opposition is more regularly offered nowadays by the Hawks where they have often received it in the past. Players such as Kirk Montgomerie, Schumann and Sargent are able to get under the skin and guard of opposition which is exactly what is needed this time of year. Defensively the Hawks are outstanding, Damien Johnson, Tyson Montgomerie, Trav Brown, Derick Freeman are seasoned campaigners and outstanding team contributors. The centreline run of McInnis, McEvoy, Schumann, Sargent, Dil Montgomerie is exciting, they win so much of the football and are devastating with their ball use. Welcome back to Brent Bascombe, desperate to feel success again after an unsuccessful assault on the Ashes with Merv Hughes and a few keen cricketers, also to Sutherland back after a lay off. Dyl Kelsh will win plenty of ruck contests and his around the ground work is excellent. Colbung has had a ball on a string throughout the second half of the year and will provide Bulldog headaches yet again, similarly the elusive Day. Highly likely that Cabot will have a run with role on Mail Medallist Jake Bruce, there are few other players who can do this job as well as Dillon. Nath’ Johnson and Danis complete the forward line that is highly productive.

Bulldogs appear also to have the firepower to take this game away. Defensively they have been kings all year, McKenna has dominated half back and roamed far and wide. He may need to stay closer to position this time around, Lochy Heath, Lowe, Hayden Heath have taken all before them in a rebounding defence lead by the welcome return of Wade O Brien, having enjoyed a couple of years recreational leave to the forward line.
The centreline of this Bulldog machine is just outstanding; Mail Medallist two times in succession Jake Bruce, the might Jared Sampson, leading goal kicker Winter, finals specialist Ryan Sampson and ruck duo Polkinghorne and McComb will see the ball heading Bulldogs goal wards aplenty. Up forward Kane Sampson stands out like a beacon, and must be held by the Hawks, fail to do this and suffer serious consequence. Marty Grocke is a clever campaigner and thrives in the higher intensity games of finals. Chapman enjoys skills that so many others can only dream of and Kane Grocke has become a great target with his strength and height belying is younger age.

These are the two most successful clubs in the history of Mid West, six premierships each, and Hawks 63.33% finals win record to the Bulldogs 52.63%, both the highest amongst all clubs. Hawks love Kyancutta, having played three finals there for three wins; the Bulldogs are one win and one loss in finals here. Despite the success, they don’t play each other too often in finals, Hawks winning the second semi last year by nine points and Bulldogs winning the 2007 Grand Final by 16 points the last two finals encounters. Central Eyre have played only 32 players in the A grade over the course of the year to West Coast Hawks 37.
Two Bulldogs have reported in each of their losses to the Hawks, is this a crack under pressure or just an anomaly? No side can afford time with players off of the ground, less so in finals. To the Bulldogs, a Kyancutta home ground advantage.

So a winner? Bulldogs at home, space and familiarity but the Hawks will enjoy the larger ground and the lighter speedsters will run hard. Both sides are fit and will be very close to full strength. With no certainty, the Hawks will start as a slight favourite in a match that can truly go both ways. No club wants to face off in the prelim final!

Wirrulla v West Coast Hawks – B Grade
The Bombers enter this match is great form, knowing from a fair way out that they would be playing this match. Two weeks ago eclipsing the Hawks in emphatic fashion - 12 plus goals. It will be closer this time around as players return to the fray. The Wirrulla forward line boasts enormous goal kicking strength, Pym, Dudley, Troy Olsen, Perry. Can they all be held? Look out for Milty Holmes, Saul Webb, Cabot around the centre and Johnson, Lawrie (Ben and Daryl) and Blumson in the back half. The Hawks will rely on younger run to help them through, Angus McInnis, Galliver, Mohi and Johns are stars of the future, McGilvray and France provide forward targets, and a strong backline of Trezona, Miller and Johnson. Simon Tucker has enjoyed another dominant year, and is well supported by Feltus.

Wirrulla appear very focussed this year and the benefit of not fielding an A Grade, although they have played a settled side for most of the season. The Hawks will compete for most of the match but may struggle to maintain the intensity of Wirrulla all the way. The Bombers to qualify first for the Grand Final.

West Coast Hawks v Wudinna United - Colts
Over the season two matches to one to the Hawks, and each game close. These two have enjoyed quite a rivalry. The Hawks have perhaps the edge is size but the Maggies maybe an edge in speed. Gallivers Jaxon and Dion are having great years Montgomerie, Edmonds, Legovini, Squire, Tucker are class players, the dangerous Harry Goosay up forward. The Magpies are lead by Lockwood Medalist Wilkins back this week, Jerichos, Ian and Adam, Petty at half back, Buckham and Douglass around the centre, and welcoming back North and Habermann this week. Elliott’s long kicking will be a factor.

The larger ground may well suit the Hawks along with final hardened experience, and they will start slight favourites, but this will be close.

SEASON PREVIEW

April 9, 2012

Late season warm weather has greeted the start of the 2013 season in Mid West with all teams primed and ready to go. Each club has won an A Grade premiership in the past nine years, and therefore all know what it takes to get to the ultimate goal.  Elliston looks to defend their crown, hard won in last years finals series, but all clubs appear to have a playing list that can go all the way, these early games so important in the overall scheme.

Elliston are the reigning premiers rising from bottom the previous year, a wonderful achievement, of which they rightfully should feel very proud.  Stellar seasons from Jay Williams and Tom Rumbelow led the way and they will again be looked to.  Elliston played so well in the finals last year, others have watched their style of play, where the drive comes from and how dangerous they are around goals, so their challenge will be harder this time around. Ben and Adam Hurrell are wonderful ball getters, with Adam away at school this year so will play less games, Jason Matthews leading the rucks, but just as capably in a key position.  Fred and Tod Romanowycz will provide forward line bite.  New players to the club include Thomas Bascomb, returning from Lameroo, Adam Haarsma from Cougars in Great Flinders and Kane Tiller from Lock.  A key out will be Aaron Hand, a big key position player, who has returned to Andamooka. Stalwarts in Luke Northcott, Rhys Prior and Christian Weetra will ensure that the club stays up and about.  No-one travels further on the EP than the Roosters to play football, and this travel issue sees challenges the win away games in the middle of winter, conversely they run a fortress of a home ground, very capably coached by Chad Fleming so expect to see red and white going around in September.

West Coast Hawks are the perennial danger, having played in every grand final since 2005, Dillon Montgomerie takes over as coach of a fast and classy outfit.  No doubt the off season loss of highly respected club president Brenton Joyce will provide an additional spur to the club.  The Hawks are good on every line and boast a depth of talent that other clubs envy.  Tyson Mont and Damien Johnson rebound from the backs ensure the forward line of Brenton Bascombe, Darren Brown and Gerard Montgomerie  have ongoing opportunities. Aiden Whitford up forward or on the ball, Jake Sargent coming off a great 2012 season are keys. Leg speed abounds, even Kirk Montgomerie is back to full fitness after his summer of romance. The club welcomes Joe Danis back from Roxby Districts, Shaun Day from Gladstone and Kingsley Ware from Koonibba.  A mean defence and productive forward line will again see the Hawks challenging for the flag and likely to kick some big scores along the way

Central Eyre will feel that their third placing last year perhaps didn’t best reflect their season or their talent, and they would be right.  At their best will challenge any side and appear to have the firepower this year to be a genuine threat right through to the last match in September. Great recruits/ returning players include Jared Sampson and Ty McKenna, both premiership players at Borderdowns Tintinara, Nathan Creaser from Mypolonga will boost a side already very well balanced  Players such as Wade O Brien, Kane Sampson, Martin Grocke and Damien Mullan have been around for many years and know success. Jake Bruce is outstanding, having cleaned up every award in 2012 including the Mail Medal. Ryan Sampson is a key, winning the tough balls and contests. Clint Winters leg speed and great rebound from Beau Lowe and Tom Freeth.  Tyler Chapman kicked plenty of goals last year and was elusive as always.  He is likely have some on ball time this year, and his mercurial reading of play and ball handling are magic, even for opposition to appreciate.  Another to look for is the emerging Brett McComb, deceptively quick and great potential.  The Bulldogs are coached again by Peter Cock, they are fit, have height, strength and speed. So long as they can manage injuries, the red white and blues will be playing very very late into the season!

Western Districts continue to be an enigma.  So regularly seeing themselves losing the close games, they have found themselves lower on the ladder than they deserve. Always competitive, and missing out to last years premier by a few points see them very close to the mark.   Scott Feltus takes the coaching helm again, and he has proven to be very astute, both at the match and trainings. New to the club are Ben Smith from Waybacks, Jeremy Rabig – South Augusta, Warren Smith Sedan Cambrai and Trueman Hoffrichter – Western United.  Look to Dylan Beinke, Jesse Hull and Jerel Fromm to provide drive around the middle . Trent Brace  and Damien Carey’s run from the backline and the strength of Rohan Hull to steady the ship when the going gets tough.  They are well served by Shannon Horgan around the middle, and expect big seasons from Brayden and Damon King. The Tigers like to shorter chip and run game, which opens up scoring opportunities should see them once again playing finals.

Wudinna United dropped the first eight games in 2012 before a late season recovery saw them win against all clubs but Central Eyre in the race for a finals berth. Tall timber Eugene Wauchope and Darryl Marshall will test the best defenders, with Troy Klante, Anthony Foster leading the defence.  Mark North regularly gets his hand to the ball first in ruck duels and leads the way around the ground. Tyson Jackson has enormous potential, so look for a big year from him, Aaron Lampre and Ashley Michael in the midfield. Regan Petty is a mean defender and Matthew Foster in a very welcome return to the game late 2012.  Luke Nettle is in his second year of coaching the club, is astute in his reading of the play and has an enormous passion for the game.  The Magpies will be affected by some good young players away at school including Remi North and Izaac Boylan, but also have some great emerging talent in Jack Wilkins and Logan Elliott.  Will win and lose games throughout the year, but if they can force a finals berth, seem to play their better football at the right time, and could just challenge right through.

Wirrulla was hardest hit with injury and player loss in 2012, but have been active in the off season and expect an improved showing this year.  Jason Henderson returns from Balaklava, Russell Erck from Waratahs NT, Jake Adamson-Thain from Mitcham, Shad Smith returning from Elliston, Julian Dickson – Western Districts all recruited this year.  Players of the ilk of Craig Johnson in Ruck, elusive Dion Pittaway, Simon Webb, Troy Olsen and Mark Binder up forward, Andrew Bitmead, Chad Guelfi and Darren Mudge all stern defenders who start many forward moves. Matthew Greatbatch has emerged as a great A Grade defender, and Braden Holmes adds skill and poise around the contests. Evan Whillas leads a strong backline, and the run of Robert Holmes and Corey Cabot ensure the ball is heading Wirrulla’s way often. The Bombers are again coached by Peter Holmes, a League stalwart who will get the best from his charges.

The Grand Final returns to Elliston this year, and with recent Grand Final regulars West Coast Hawks having ever only won one out of their five finals games at the venue, it sets up for an interesting season.  Good Luck to all clubs along the way, winter sport days being so important to our social life on the Eyre Peninsula

ELLISTON MAKES HISTORY

FIRST MID WEST CLUB TO GO FROM

WOODEN SPOON TO PREMIERS

by Lawrie Colliver - Sunday 9 September 2012

Elliston took out the 2012 Mid West Premiership, defeating the West Coast Hawks by 41 points at Wirrulla. After a great first term by Elliston where they kicked 4.6 to 2.2 the Hawks bounced back in the second term and at the long break led by four points.

In the third term, Elliston put paid to the Hawks comeback and dominated proceedings, adding 6.1 to 0.1 to set up a match winning lead. They finished off the job in the last quarter, breaking a 12 year drought and ending the Hawks run of three consecutive flags.

Club President Darryl Huppatz was “over the moon” with the result, saying the win was the result of a lot of hard work.

“We had a lot of issues last year, finishing bottom and struggling to field a B grade, so in the off-season the Committee worked very hard. We did some recruiting, the lads had a big pre-season and it has paid off”

“We still had our fair share of injuries, using over 50 players in the A Grade this season and it wasn’t until the Grand Final that we actually had our best side on the park. “

Huppatz says it’s a big deal for the small Eyre Peninsula town of just 240 people. “We along with Wirrulla are the only two teams in the competition to not have some sort of amalgamation, so to win the Premiership is great and hopefully will set us up for the future”.

Meanwhile Huppatz says the celebrations will last most the week, “Not too many lads went to bed last night and with our Club end of season day today, it’ll be the start of a few big few days”.
