Tigers Keen to Avenge for 2012 Grand Final Heartache
from James Lang - 13 September 2013

The Northern Areas Football Association has reached the business end of the season, with the Southern Flinders set to take on the Orroroo in this Saturday’s Grand Final at Orroroo. It has been an interesting finals series for the Roos, who were soundly beaten by the Tigers at Booleroo in the Qualifying final, before bouncing back with a strong finish over the Broughton-Mundoora Eagles at Port Broughton in the Preliminary Final.
The Tigers were in sterling form in their strong win over the Roos to book their place in the final, with Senior Colts Medallist Brady Zwar teaming up well with Joel Palmer and Matt Woolford in the middle, whilst half back flanker Rhys Stanbridge was in outstanding form. Forwards Simon Treloar and Brett Woodards also enjoyed a day out kicking seven and six goals apiece. A strong showing from this group on Saturday will make it enormously hard for Orroroo.
For the Roos to overcome the Tigers, much depends on the form of key players such as Jonathon Byerlee in the ruck and key on ballers and former Mail Medallists Brodie O’Dea and John Nicholas. Damien Ellery has produced some good form at centre half Back in recent times and will need to be at his best, against a strong Tigers forward line.
Whilst the Tigers took the honours convincingly when they last met, they are likely to remain favourites, but expect a much stronger showing from the Roos, particularly on their home turf.

Finals are looming

by James Lang - 23 July 2013

With only five rounds remaining, the final four appears to be taking shape, with the main question now being who is likely to finish where? Orroroo lead the competition and have been in some striking recent form. 2011 Mail Medallist Brodie O’Dea is again in some outstanding form and is one of the favourites to take out the 2013 medal. The Roos are currently a game clear on top plus a sizeable percentage margin.

Southern Flinders sit a game behind in second, with the Crystal Brook Roosters a game further behind in third. It will be a very tight contest to grab a top two spot and ensure the double chance. This week’s clash at Wirrabarra could prove to be crucial as both sides look to shore up a top two finish.
Broughton Mundoora sit two games further back in fourth, all but assured of a finals finish. The Eagles recently took the prized scalp of Orroroo at Mundoora, proving that they can be genuine finals contenders. Their last two matches of the season against Southern Flinders and Crystal Brook could well be a preview of finals to come.
Jamestown Peterborough and BMW seek destined to fight to try to avoid the wooden spoon. The sides who fought out an epic preliminary final in 2011, have battled for consistency this season with the BMW Lions only registering a single win so far and the Magpies just the two. The Magpies have played better football since the arrival of the two South African players Dhino Zwane and Thabiso Phakedi, both of whom have shown form good enough to make the best players list. Whilst for the Lions, a curse of injuries and missed opportunities has been the tale of 2013.
The Cyril Jolly Memorial Trophy for the leading goal kicker is again set for a tight finish. With Southern Flinders Brett Woodards leading the way on 45, holding a slight lead over Broughton Mundoora’s Brett Harland on 42.

JAMESTOWN EMBRACES AFL SOUTH AFRICA

from Northern Areas Correspondent James Lang, 23 May 2013

The Jamestown Community has again gone completely outside of the square, this time with regard to local footy. The club has entered in to a program with AFL South Africa which willl see the club host two of the National Squad members for the 2013 season. Attached is a photo of the recently arrived South African footballers who had their first training at Jamestown's Victoria Park last night. They have liteally been here for two days.
Pictured on the left is Thambiso Phakedi (Jamestown-Peterborough Magpies Guernsey) shaking hands with club President John Redden. Thambiso plays for the Guateng Blues in South Africa. On the right (South African Lions Guernsey), shaking hands with coach Brian "Butch" Smith is Thembinkosi "Dinho" Zwane, his home club is the Kwa Zulu Natal Eagles. Dinho has previously represented the South Launceston Bulldogs in the Tasmanian State Football League in a previous visit to Australia, whilst both players have represented the South African Lions in the AFL International Cup.
The program has been co-ordinated by AFL South Africa Football Operations Manager Tony "Joel" Kelly. Joel grew up in Jamestown and still has a large family presence in the area. In 2011 the club worked successfully with him to co-ordinate fundraising from the Jamestown-Peterborough Club, to assist the South African Lions Inteational Cup team during their tour of Australia. Joel's nephew Chris Stacey has worked with the clubto help co-ordinate the player placement, which involves local families providing board for the players aswell as upskilling them by providing experience of working within agriculture, in this case cereal cropping and livestock production.
Both players have been named to play for the Jamestown-Peterborough Magpies against the Boolero-Melrose-Wilmington Lions (home club of the Brisbane Lion's Justin Clarke) at Wilmington this Saturday.

Round Four Season Update

by James Lang, Monday 13 May 2013

With four rounds now completed, the Northern Areas Football Association 2013 season is starting to take shape. The season has shaped to be tighter than 2012 with several sides welcoming new players to strengthen their lineup.

Southern Flinders, looking to avenge the last second defeat to Crystal Brook in the 2012 grand final have emerged with some sound form, collecting wins in each of their first four matches over Orroroo, Jamestown/Peterborough, Crystal Brook and BMW. This week’s match against Broughton/Mundoora should also provide a strong contest, but on form the Tigers should be too good. The side has been strengthened by the return of dual Mail Medallist Matt Woolford, along with a great start to the season from key forward Brett Woodards, who has 15 goals from the last two matches.

Orroroo have been somewhat of a surprise packet, starting the season very strongly, with the only blemish being a twenty one point loss to Southern Flinders in the opening round. Since then, the Roos have enjoyed wins over reigning premiers Crystal Brook, neighbours BMW and Broughton/Mundoora. The Roos should start strong favourites in their round five clash against Jamestown/Peterborough. Orroroo has been strengthened by the three Byerlee brothers reuiniting at the club, adding to the class of players like Mail Medallist Brodie O’Dea in the midfield.

Broughton/Mundoora have continued their promising form from the 2012 season, by collecting wins over Jamestown-Peterborough and BMW, whilst suffering narrow losses to Crystal Brook and Orroroo. The Eagles will face a tough task this week, when they head North to Wirrabarra to take on the ladder leading Southern Flinders Tigers. The Eagles have been strengthened by the addition of star Rian Crane, who has enjoyed a solid start to the season. He will need to be at his best on Saturday to challenge the strong form of the Tigers.

Premier in 2012 and 2013, Crystal Brook have started the season a little slower than in the past, entering round five with two wins and two losses. The Roosters had a very hard fought win over Broughton/Mundoora to start the season, before consecutive losses to Orroroo and Southern Flinders. Saturday saw the Roosters overcome a strong challenge from an improved Jamestown-Peterborough side, eventually running out twenty five point winners. Some good news for the club has been the form of key forward James Wardle, who managed five goals in his most recent outing. The Roosters will have a tough task ahead of them this week against the BMW Lions, but at home they should start favourites.

BMW (Booleroo Melrose Wilmington) have started the season quite competitively, with a strengthened squad from the 2012 season. After overcoming Jamestown/Peterborough in the season opener, the Lions fell just short against Broughton/Mundoora, before suffering further losses to Orroroo and Southern Flinders. The Lions will be looking to return to the winners circle this week, when they travel to Crystal Brook to take on the reigning premiers. Over the past few weeks the club has enjoyed former player Justin Clarke’s entry to AFL ranks at the Brisbane Lions.

Jamestown/Peterborough have presented a far more competitive lineup than in 2012, but are yet to enjoy their first win of the season. A narrow loss to BMW in round one, was followed with losses to Southern Flinders and Broughton/Mundoora before suffering a late fade out on Saturday to go down to the Roosters at Crystal Brook. A huge positive for the club has been the form of midfielder Jess Kenny, who has been able to back up good form in the middle with some sound goal-kicking. Saturday will be a tough task for the Magpies, against the in-form Orroroo side at Peterborough.

Round 1 report - Solid Start for Reigning Premiers

from James Lang - Sunday 21 April 2013

Local Football returned to the Flinders Ranges, with the start of the Northern Areas Football Association Season. Reigining premiers, the Crystal Brook Roosters played host to Southern neighbour, the Broughton-Mundoora Eagles, in what was widely tipped to be match of the round.
The Roosters enter the season after claiming the last two premierships, including last year’s dramatic grand final at Jamestown. As for the Eagles, they were one of the form teams last season, just falling short of a grand final place, finishing the season in third.
An even team performance by Crystal Brook, helped them overcome a strong Broughton-Mundoora outfit, kicking away in the last quarter to register a hard fought nineteen point win. Honours were evenly shared across the first three quarters, with some inaccurate kicking from the Roosters allowing the Eagles to hold a nine point lead at the final break. But the premiers proved too classy, kicking eight goals to three in the last quarter to finish with a nineteen point victory.
Best for the Roosters were Adam Kupsch, Cameron Arbon and Joel Millard, whilst the Eagles were well served by newcomer Rian Crane, Chris Elliott and Josh Simounds. Goals were evenly spread for Crystal Brook with the only multiple goal kickers being James Wardle, Joel Millard and Shane Arbon with two each. While Brett Harland was the only multiple goal kicker for the Eagles with three.
Grand finalists, the Southern Flinders Tigers hosted the Orroroo Roos at Ewart Oval in Gladstone. Both sides struggled to break the scoring shackles early, with the Tigers holding a nine point lead at half time. Matters remained tight during the second half, with the Tigers maintaining the lead, eventually running out twenty one point winners.
In his return to the club, Matt Woolford was named best for Southern Flinders, ably joined by Cody Turner and Jarrod Cunningham. Whilst for the Roos, Billie Tapscott, Ryan Finn and Darren Hughes were named best. Jed Hennessey booted four goals for the Tigers, whilst Matt Woolford chipped in with three, with Aiden Lee and Jonathon Byerlee kicking two goals each for the Roos.
The Jamestown-Peterborough Magpies hosted the Booleroo-Melrose-Wilmington (BMW) Lions at Peterborough to complete the round, with both sides undergoing serious changes from last season which saw them both miss the finals.
BMW started strongly, maintaining a small lead for the bulk of the first half, entering the break seventeen points up. A strong finish to the third quarter aided by a slight breeze saw the Magpies close the gap to just three points. But the Lions had all the answers in the final quarter, finishing twenty three point victors.
Best for the Lions were past Mail Medallists Simon George and Greg Fiebig, with Adam Zubrinich also named in the best. Best for the Magpies were Lachie Bray, Jess Kenny and Ben Home. Matt Foulis kicked four goals for BMW to lead the scorers, with Gavin Jonker and Travis McCallum scoring two each. Multiple goal kickers for the Magpies were Ryan Simpson, Pat Clark and Ben Home with two.
Round Two will see Jamestown-Peterborough host Southern Flinders at Jamestown’s Victoria Park, with Orroroo hosting Crystal Brook and BMW heading to the coast to take on Broughton-Mundoora at Port Broughton.

CRYSTAL BROOK GO BACK TO BACK

WITH GOAL ON THE SIREN

from James Lang at Jamestown

September 17, 2012

A massive crowd of just over 6,700 spectators enjoyed one of the most exciting days of local football and netball finals that regional South Australia has enjoyed in living memory. People gathered at Victoria Park in Jamestown, the birthplace of RM Williams, in anticipation of a great day’s matches. With superb conditions of clear weather and a top of 20 degrees, countless amounts of local malting barley was consumed through the several bars, several local cattle and pigs were a feature of the famous barbeques, countless sandwhiches, cakes biscuits and scones, the famous Ice Cream Giant Twins from neighbouring Laura and there was also some tasty Spencer Gulf squid on offer for the seafood lover.
The locals were blessed to have Melbourne Captain Jack Trengove in attendance, along with fellow Demon Luke Tapscott who hails from neighbouring Orroroo, former South Adelaide Premiership Star and SANFL hall of famer Peter Darley, Sturt legend Trevor Sims, SANFL hall of famer and Jamestown local Peter Kitschke and the voice of South Australian Football for many years, recently retired ABC Grandstand stalwart Roger Wills.

Along with four grades of football, there is ten grades of netball underway in the community stadum, known as “The Big Shed”. This is a monument to community efforts, volunteering and an ability to innovate. It was a former Hangar from the Edinburgh Air Base, which has been converted to house two international standard netball/basketball courts and a six lane indoor cricket training centre, the Lehmann/Gillespie Centre. An unusual but highly effective method of raising funds occurred back in 2006, when the community held a charity cricket match at Adelaide Oval, with none other than Dennis Lillee and Rod Marsh acting as coaches for the day. Recent visitors to the facility include Nathan Lyon, Dan Christian, the Adelaide Thunderbirds, the South Australian Redbacks and Scorpions cricket squads aswell as State League netball and basketball sides.

Match Report

What was anticipated to be an close finish, proved to be exactly that as the two most recent premiers of the Northern Areas went head to head at Jamestown. The Southern Flinders Tigers kicked away early, making the most of their opportunities against an inaccurate Crystal Brook Roosters side. The Tigers held the lead at quarter time 5.2 (32) to 2.5 (17).

Crystal Brook began to gradually chip away at the Tigers lead, reducing the margin to nine points at half time and eight points at three quarter time. But it seemed as close as the Roosters would get, the Tigers always had the answers.

Southern Flinders started the last quarter with a bang and began to build the lead, extending the margin to over three goals with around ten minutes remaining. 6,700 spectators looked on and wondered if the Roosters would have anything left to give and whether the extra week off may prove to be an advantage.

The Roosters responded and began to play high risk, fast paced football and in doing so began to straighten up in front of goal. Goals began to become more frequent and with only a few minutes to the Tigers lead had been reduced to a solitary point.

What followed was tense, desperate football with some great tackles, smothers and shepherds. Play was almost exclusively in the Roosters forward line, but the Tigers desperation was superb and they managed to keep the Roosters from scoring. With the ball in contention on the Eastern wing, a sharp kick was sent inside fifty where Roosters forward James Wardle flew high and hung on to what was clearly the mark of the day, as he was sandwiched between other Rooster and Tiger jumpers.

With the siren nearing Wardle went back and from 40 metres out set the kick on its way. No sooner had if left his boot, than the siren sounded, a miss would mean five extra minutes each end and a goal would deliver the flag. But kick truly he did and the party had begun. A sea of Red and White descended on to the ground, whilst the Tigers players and fans felt the ultimate deflation of having worked so hard, only to have it taken away at the eleventh hour.

Not to be outdone, the Roosters also managed to take out the B Grade, albeit through another tight finish holding off the fast finishing Broughton-Mundoora Eagles by a single point.
