CROWS FLY HIGH AGAINST ROOSTERS ROUND 5 REPORT by Kenn Rogers Monday May 14, 2012 The high marking and accurate kicking by the Crows at Curramulka on Saturday was just part of their winning strength in a 70 point win at Curramulka. The ground play and a winning centre line and a brilliant forward line saw the Tri-colours remain undefeated and the only real test left for them is against Kadina in a fortnight’s time at Minlaton. Kicking with the wind in the first term the Crows had all the play but they were unable to break the strong defence of Bute on many occasions but still held a good lead at the first break. Highlights of the Crows effort was the goal shooting of Andrew ParsonS early in the term who finished with three. James Moss took a brilliant mark which added to the excitement of the Crow supporters. Behinds by Nathan Hornhardt and Josh Martin were the only scores by Bute against the wind. Matt Murnane was winning the ruck and Pitt along with Thompson and O’Donohue were taking the ball away from the bounces. At the first break the Crows led 4-4 to two behinds. CRACKER OF A SECOND TERM The Crows continued where they left off in the first term and booting into a 4-5 goal wind they poured on the goals with ease. The quarter became the James Moss show as he marked everything that came his way and booted accurately to have 5 goals for the term. Adam Pitt and Wade Thompson joined in on the glory with a goal each whilst Josh Martin and Travis George were the only goal scorers for Bute. The battle in ruck between Murnane and Claxton was fairly even in this term and the centre line was won by the Crows with ease to have them go into the long break with a lead of 11-6 to Bute 2-6. CLOSER CONTEST The second half was a much closer contest as Bute moved their players forward in groups making it hard for the Crows to play their wide open game. The Crows lost Thompson and O’Donohue to injury in the second term and the side felt their absence. Chris Langford and Jarrod Curtis were having a real battle at the vital centre half area with both players making the best player list. Curtis finished a shade in front in this contest. The Crows won the term but they did not make any real inroads with the wind and scored 5-3 to Bute 4-1 to have a 10 goal lead at the final change, 16-10 to Bute 6-7. Once again playing into the wind the Crows never gave up pushing the ball forward and their defence stood tall, led by Ryan Brundell, Sam Mumford and Damien Bennett. Shannon Goldsmith was moved to the centre and made his presence felt with some devastating tackles. The Crows ran out good winners 19-14 to Bute 8-10. Best players for the Crows were Adam Pitt with another gutsy performance, James Moss with seven goals in his first A grade game, Nigel Osborne on the wing and Matthew Murnane for a first class effort in ruck. For Bute it was hard to choose best players as the Crows shut them out of the play in all positions. Josh Martin tried hard in the forward lines and Sam Trengove was at his ever reliable best. Anderson Claxton tried hard in ruck and took over when Murnane had a rest. OTHER GAMES PASKEVILLE v C Y COUGARS. The Cat’s were no match for the Magpies at the “Mountain” on Saturday as the Maggies romped away to a 10 goal victory. After losing their first couple, the Magpies are back on track with three straight wins and look set to make to be part of the Finals actions. Stars for Pasky were Ryan Price with four goals and Ashley Matz three. Final scores saw Paskeville 15-8 defeat Cougars 5-10. ARDROSSAN v WALLAROO Wallaroo had the better of Ardrossan on Saturday winning by 25 points. Following their drubbing by the Crows last week this was a heartening result for the Roos as both sides had 21 scoring shots. Andrew Ross the consistent forward for the Doggies booted another 5 with Brett Burgess three. Brendan Mckeough booted four for Ardrossan , the Roos still seeking their first win. Better players for Wallaroo were Nathan Wright, Daniel Gregory, and Stuart Green, while David Bickmore, Hayden Pierson and Luke Wood were best for Ardrossan. MOONTA v SOUTHERN EAGLES. Things just get worse and worse for the Southern Eagles as they were completely outclassed at Warooka on Saturday as they went down by 144 points. Toby Haseldine and Hayden Cock shared the goals with six each Shane Moss chipped in with four Shane Jordan three. Best players named were Shane Jordan, Aiden Zwar and Tim Blight, whilst Sam Barlow, Shaun McWaters, Nat Clarke, Jake Symonds, Jarrod Spencer and Rohan Williams tried hard for the Eagles. A bit of news from the B Grade this week. The ever resilient Geoff James of Wallaroo booted seven of his sides 12 goals in their win against the Ardrossan side who managed seven in total. At Curramulka, Tyson Tilbrook booted ten goals as the Crows scored 16-11 to Bute 7-8. The Roos were no match for the smart moving, machine like side with the Crows having winners in all positions for most of the day. At times the Roos showed some brilliant patches but they were few and far between being unable to put it all together on a regular basis. The Crow machine would not let them and from the first bounce Matt Murnane controlled the ruck work and Pitt, Thompson and co whisked the ball into their forward lines with ease. The Baillie and Parsons show started in the opening term in the forward area as they took control of the game and put the Roo defence was under all sorts of pressure. The Crows outscored the opposition in all areas on the ground and won the first term handsomely 8-4 to 2 points. Brett Baillie playing at centre half forward was marking well and feeding off when unable to mark and this was where Pitt O’Donohue and Thompson scored well. At the other side of centre Jarrod Curtis was emulating Baillie’s effort and turned the tide on a number of occasions. The work put in by the younger brigade in Tilbrook Young Harris and Brett Baillie was first class. The second term was when the Kangaroos showed they could make a game of it if they were given the chance with some brilliant passages of play. However the Crow defenders stood tall particularly at centre half back with Jarrod Curtis in excellent form taking some brilliant marks. His ground play was first class and he was well backed up by Sam Mumford, Damien Bennett and Ryan Brundell. A tirade of goal shooters from the Crows made sure the opposition would not get on top. Goals from Gillies, Millar, Baillie, O’Donohue,Clements, Murnane and Parsons allowed the Crows to set up a good lead at the long break. Jesse Evans (2) Leigh Koch, were the goal scores for Ardrossan in this term. The game was well in hand for the homeside at the long break with the Crows leading 16-6 to Ardrossan 3-6. If this was the premiership term it started off with a breathtaking goal from Wade Thompson. The ball was tossed by Murnane down to Thompson who with brilliant burst of speed left everyone wondering and within five seconds of the ball up a goal came from his boot. The good crowd roared their approval. This was the first of a devastating term for the Ardrossan side as Adam Pitt and the Crow centre and forward lines dominated play to score 7-7 to 1 goal. For Ardrossan, Dale Treloar at full back had his hands full with the battery of forwards 50’s the Crows threw at him. Sam Graham battled hard all day in ruck against Murnane and Nick Brind playing against his old club was working hard on the half back line. Leading at the final change 23-13 to 4-6 the Crows could have slackened off a bit but this they did not do. The final term was just a routine by both sides but the young Roo side did not let the scores get in their way as they threw themselves in hard and the younger Crows started to cramp up and this is where a good bench came in handy. Adam Pitt picked 40 plus touches for the day and booted three goals to be best player. Choosing other best players in the Crows was very hard as Jarrod Curtis and Wade Thompson were playing brilliantly and young Brett Baillie had his best game ever and was my best on ground. Matt Murnane played very well in ruck and wade Thompson showed his brilliant speed around the ground. Other players to impress were Aaron Young, Dylan Gillies Sam Harris and Taleb Tilbrook. On many occasions the Ardrossan side were first to the ball but were swamped by a stronger fitter side and worthy winners. Kadina v Moonta In other games, Kadina scored the shock victory of the day, not so much by winning against Moonta but by the margin. Kadina were in control all day and with spearhead Willy Serle on fire with 9 goals, Trevor Harradine 3 won 21-5 to Moonta 10-10. Dean Cutting and Tim Blight kicked two apiece in what a disappointing effort for the Demons who have lost their past two matches. The scores did not really indicate the game as both sides had a large number of shots but the Bloodhounds were more accurate. Best players named for Kadina were Willy Serle at the goal front. Jono Lee in ruck, Cam Faulkner in the centre Simon Kretschmer Zac Edwards and Trevor Harradine. Ricky Mackereth has earned his return to the Demons with another first class disply in defence along with the ever reliable Toby Haseldine and Aiden Zwar. Others to do well were Nick Blight, Shane Jordan and Tom Ferguson. Cougars v Bute Bute got their season back on track at Maitland with an 11 goal win over the Cougars. We saw another bag of goals by Bute player with Joshua Martin kicking 9, whilst Matt Millard kicked five and Nathan Hewett four in the final tally of 22-14 to Cougars 11-10. Alex Greenslade bagged 3 whilst Shaun Bryan Gatto each scored two. Best players for Bute were Josh Martin, Dane Avery, Josh Pearce, Nathan hewett, Sam Trengove and James Venning. Best named for the Cougars were Shaun Gatto, Joseph Hunt, Corey Graham and Tom Van Schaik. Paskeville v Southern Eagles. The game was played at Paskeville and was an easy win for the Magpies over the Eagles as they attacked well and “de feathered” the Eagles with ease particularly after half time. Paskeville won 19-8 to Eagles 5-10. In a day for the forward across the League, Ashley Matz finished with 7 goals and Mitchell Wooding Glen Mulders and Ashley Bruce each with three. Best players named were Mitchell Wooding, Ashley Bruce, Matz, Seth Matson and Stuart Daniel for Paskeville. For the Southern Eagles the efforts put in by Nathan Clarke, Brad Coles and Trent Hayes along with Matthew Allen, Luke McMahon and Will Murdoch. After this round The CMS Crows remain undefeated with Kadina one game behind followed by Paskeville Bute and Moonta all on equal points. Kadina’s Willy Serle has 18 goals and takes over the lead in the goal kickers list ahead of Matz from Paskeville with 17 and Ben Millar of the Crows on 13 Round 4 scores - May 5, 2012 CMS Crows 28.15 (183) def Ardrossan 6.10 (46) Best: CMS Crows - Jarrod Curtis, Adam Pitt, Brett Baillie, Wade Thompson, Nigel Osborn, Matthew Murnane. The match of the round opened with fast flowing football with eleven goals were scored in the first term. Dean Cutting in the forward lines for Moonta was giving the Crow defence a headache whilst at the other end of the ground against the wind a number of Crow players were peppering the goals to keep pace. The good breeze (worth 3-4 goals) was to the eastern end with Moonta using it to advantage. Moonta booted away to a four goal two to Crows one goal one early in the game. Shane Jordan and Dean Cutting were doing everything right for Moonta while for the Crows, Troy Clements, Adam Pitt and Andrew Parsons were keeping their side in the game. Matt Murnane was playing well in ruck for the Crows and also on the ground as he booted two great goals late in the term to grab the lead however Dean Cutting bounced back with two very late goals to have Moonta in front at the first break 6-3 to Crows 5-2. CROWS CONTROL PLAY... Kicking with the wind in the second term the Crows controlled the play with Ben Millar, Wade Thompson and Adam Pitt who were playing brilliantly along with Clements and Shannon Goldsmith on the half back line. The Crows were a bit on the inaccurate side due to the strong Moonta defence in Toby Haseldine and Ricky Mackereth. Ruck rover Dylan Mansell and small man Aiden Zwar were playing but the Crows dominated the term adding 5-6 and held Moonta to 2-2. Moonta were still in the game at the long break with late goals from Cutting and Dylan Mansell. The Crow defence led by Ryan Brundell, Jarrod Curtis and Damian Bennett was almost impassable to keep the Crows on top. At the long break the Crows held a two goal lead and Moonta were still in with a chance. Crows 10-7 to Moonta 8-5. During the half time break the wind started to change from the west to the south, consequently it was across the ground at Moonta although it did not affect the standard of the game. EVEN TERM In third term both sides threw their bodies into the game and clashes were hard with fierce tackling and very good high marking. From the opening bounce down of the second half Troy Clements grabbed the ball and had a goal on the board within ten seconds to set the crowd alight. At the ball up in the centre confusion reigned between players and umpires as to who broke the centre square bounce rule but all was settled after what seemed an eternity... Matt Murnane of the Crows and Henry Drogemuller from the Demons were having a real battle in ruck and the battle between Pitt and Mansell saw Pitt come out on top with strong support from Ben O’Donohue. The wing battles between young Ben Illman and Tom Ferguson along with John Andrews and Nigel Osborne on the other wing were intriguing with the Crow players coming out on top. Wade Thompson and Shane Jordan were having a good battle in the centre but were playing well apart from each other. Coming into the final term the Moonta side was still in with a chance as the scores had the Crows at 13-13 to Moonta 10-9. BRILLIANT FINAL TERM. The strong Crow defence lead by Ryan Brundell who played brilliantly at full back Jarrod Curtis at centre half back were ably supported by Shannon Goldsmith and Jamie Kemp, who were an inspiration to the younger players. Sam Harris came off the interchange and booted two goals to boost his confidence and Taleb Tilbrook also off the bench played extremely well Fitness proved the winner in this game as the Crows ran away with the game in the final term outscoring the Demons 5-3 to 1 goal to win easily 18-16 to 11-9. The win by the Crows has sounded a warning to other clubs not to take them lightly as they are fit and ready to defend their top spot on the YPFL ladder. BUTE V PASKEVILLE From Cock of the Roost last week to a “feather duster” this week was the story for the Bute side as they went down to the Magpies. Last week they played their grand final opponents of last season in Kadina and turned the tables but Saturday was a different story. The scores were fairly close at the long break with Bute leading by a point 7-10 to 7-9. However from here on Bute were held goalless as Pasky went on to record a brilliant win 14-14 to 7-14. Sam Arthur and Ashley Matz each booted three goals for Paske with Matt Rodda, Stuart Daniel and Ashley Bruce kicking two apiece. Better players for Paskeville were Michael Daniel, Ashley Bruce, Matthew Eagles, Stuart Daniel, Gavin Bussenschutt and Seth Matson who is improving each game in the ruck. For Bute Stewart Wehr continues to kick goals finishing with three, best for Bute were Josh Pearce, Adam Cock, Adrian Simpson and Nathan Hewett. Wallaroo V Kadina Kadina has a handy lead at the half time break with against Wallaroo 10-9 to 7-3 . However Wallaroo failed to fire in the second half whilst Kadina booted away to an easy win to wash away the previous weeks defeat to Bute. Kadina finished in front at the final siren with 16-15 to 8-4 win. Willy Serle booted four goals, Trevor Harradine and Kane Zilm three each. Adelaide Plains recruit Brett Burgess booted four of Wallaroo’s eight goals. Trevor Harradine was named as best for Kadina ahead of Ben Waller, and Zac Edwards. Best for Wallaroo were Matt Grillett, Reece Page, Adam Watts and Dylan Boundy. Ardrossan v C Y Cougars. In the battle of the first round for the Valley Cup between these two sides the Cougars took the honours with an 18-13 to 10-4 win. The game was played at Ardrossan where Alex Greenslade booted four goals for the Cougars. Better players named for the Cougars were Alex Haughey, Todd Payne, Shaun Gatto, and Jo Hunt. Theo Cotsoris, Daniel Lutze, Luke Wood each booted two goals for Ardrossan with George Rowntree, Theo Cotsaris, and Hayden Pierson named as best players. So after three rounds, all teams by Ardrossan have a win on the board. This weekend bottom meets top with Ardrossan hosting the CMS Crows. Kadina and Moonta meet in the Cousin Jack derby, Bute travels to Maitland to play the Cougars and the Southern Eagles have a long trip to Paskeville in what is an important game for both sides. As welcome as the rain was it dragged the standard of play seeing the top and bottom sides closer together. BUTE v KADINA This was the game of the day and a replay of last year’s grand final. Bute led early but the Bloodhounds kept at it and hit the front thanks to a goal from Giles Ellis with around ten minutes to play. Bute kept their cool and Chris Langford kicked the goal to put the Roosters back in front with only minutes remaining. It was an important pyschological win for them, Kadina having beaten them in the past two Grand Finals. Best players for Bute were Adam Cock, Jesse Kenny, Jack Kenny, the ever reliable Sam Trengove, Josh Pearce and Stewart Wehr (4 goals). For Kadina Ben Waller, Cam Faulkner, Giles Ellis, Jono Lee, Trevor Harradine and Josh Lawson. Giles Ellis was the only multiple scorer for Kadina with three majors. EAGLES v COUGARS In the other close game of the round, “Windy Hill” at Warooka saw the Cougars in control early against the Southern Eagles. As the game progressed the Eagle boys clawed their way back to have a very tight finish. With the final score going the Eagles way 8-12 (60) to the Cougars 8-10 (58) The Eagles struggled up forward to kick a winning score did not have a dominant forward and finished with eight single goal kickers. Their better players were Jarrod Spencer, Jackson Pisani, Ross Pederson, Trent Hayes Shaun McWaters and Luke McMahon. Best players named for the Cougars were Joseph Hunt, Alex Haughey, Cam Webster, Ben Vaiana, Shaun Gatto and Lachlan Mickan. CROWS v WALLAROO Two unbeaten teams met at Curramulka in a match that ended as a reasonably good win for the Crows. However, the Doggies managed to stay with them for three quarters but ran out of steam in the final term. The game was marred by the scraggy play by both sides as they tackled hard and the greasy ball did not make for any real highlights. Many chest marks slipped through and overhead marks were almost unsighted all day. The game was umpired by the experienced Des Fuss and Peter Mitchell , the latter umpiring his 400th game. Both officials had their hands full all day keeping control of the game. At the half time break the Crows were in front 6-8 to 4-4 and looked like pulling away, but they were unable to make the break until the final term when the Doggies ran out of gas. A smart move by CMS coach Jamie Kemp saw Matthew Pappageorge moved to full forward where he repaid the faith with three quick goals and another late in the term as the Crows raced away to a final term score of 6-3 to Wallaroo 1 goal 2. Final scores saw the Crows winning 14-16 (100) to Wallaroo 7-6 (48) Adam Pitt turned in a brilliant game as did Ben O’Donohue and Jarrod Curtis. Others to do well were Aaron Young, Andrew Parsons, Troy Clements and Adam Jolly. For the Wallaroo boys, best named were Reece Page, Daniel Gregory, Nathan Murphy and Nathan Wright. Andrew Ross and Daniel Gregory each booted two goals. For the Crows were Pappageorge 4, Adam Pitt 3 Adam Jolly and Ben Millar 2 each At Moonta, The Demons accounted for Paskeville by 21 points. Aiden Zwar was best on ground while Tim Blight was the dominant forward kicking four. Matthew Eagles and Stuart Daniel were best for the Magpies. This week Moonta hosts the CMS Crows, the winner to go to top spot. Bute plays Paskeville in what should be an interesting clash. Wallaroo plays Kadina and Ardrossan hosts the Cougars, with one team set to record their first win. Thompson showed his fleet footed disposals were still as great as when he played for North Adelaide and the Port Adelaide Power. Thompson set the field alight out of centre. To start the second term he was on the bench for no other reason having a rest, when called back into play he showed more of his skills as the team booted another two quick goals. Paskeville were tipped to push the Crows but were unable to match the pressure coach Kemp has got the tri-colour lads playing. Although beaten in ruck by Seth Matson the work by Pitt, O’Donohue and Thompson saw them get the ball into the forward lines with ease. The spearhead in Ben Millar was a good move and he finished the game with five goals. Paskeville were struggling and kicking with the wind could only manage two goals as the Crow defence was as mean as ever. Jarrod Curtis at centre half back was very impressive ably supported by Jamie Kemp and Ryan Brundell Shannon Goldsmith and Damien Bennett in the last line of defence. At the long break The Crows had booted 11-6 to Paskeville 4-5 . The third term was just as dismal for Paskeville as they could only manage 3-1 whilst the Crows piled on 5-2 into the breeze. In the final term The Crows drove the nail further into the coffin of Paske as they held the Magpies scoreless until the last minute of the game whilst they kicked 6-6 to Paske 1-1. Adam Jolly starred on the half forward line as he broke loose to boot 6 goals for the game, he was ably supported in the forward lines by Aaron Young, Andrew Parsons, Brett Baillie and Dylan Gillies. Paskeville did not have a winner anywhere on the ground except for Seth Matson in ruck. Abraham Helfand, Michael Daniel, Matthew Eagles and Matt Rodda were the only players of any note for Paske. Ashley Matz at full forward was the only player in the forward lines to give the Maggies any chance of scoring, as he booted 3 goals for the game. Injuries will be the only obstacle for the Crows in their quest for a flag whilst Paskeville has a lot of work to do if they are going to be a force in the competition. Other matches The revitalised Cougars were no match for the new look Moonta side at Maitland as the Demons raced away to a big win of 20-14 to 9-7. At three quarter time Moonta led 14-11 to Cougars 6-5. There were no best players or goal kickers available at time of going to print. Wallaroo had the better of the Souithern Eagles right from the start and whilst there was not a great margin until the final term when Wallaroo kicked away to win 13-13 to Eagles 7-4. Andrew Ross booted 5 goals with Stuart Green and Riley Westlake each kicking 2 for Wallaroo. The Southern Eagles saw Joe Virgin boot 3. Best for Wallaroo were Nathan Wright, Reece Page, Daniel Gregory and Andrew Ross. The Eagles were best served by Jack White, Luke McMahon, Liam Luke, and Joe Virgin. Kadina hosted Ardrossan for their opening game and Ardrossan took the game up to the Bloodhounds in the first term, however, from here on it was all Kadina as Kadina had a lead of 9-6 to 5-0 early in the second term. Half way through the final term Kadina had kicked away to a 17-10 to 7-6 lead to run out winners 24-16 to 14-13. Ian McMillan and Willy Serle each booted 4 goals and Papps booted 3. Rowntree 2012 SEASON PREVIEW with Kenn Rogers April 12, 2012 Football is back on the Yorke Peninsula this Saturday. There has been a number of coaching changes with last season’s runner up Bute appointing Mark Stuttley of Broughton/Mundoora to replace David Polkinghorne. On the player front, the Roosters have regained Josh Pearce (Walkerville) and 21 year-old tall forward Josh Martin (BMW). Mildura lad, tried at Sturt. Key utility Chris Langford returns from Queensland after winning a flag in a local Queensland competition. Wallaroo has a new coach in Rian Nelson formerly of Hamley Bridge, Forward Brett Burgess comes across to the club from Adelaide Plains club Mallala, while they have also recruited from a few SAAFL Amateur Clubs. Moonta has appointed the well known and travelled ex Port Adelaide Premiership player in Paul Northeast as their coach for 2012 in the hope he will bring a flag to the club. He replaces Travis Skipworth, Ricky Mackereth returns after some time at the HW Eagles in Adelaide Plains, while Haydn Cock has moved across from Bute. Paskeville has also appointed Shaun Glacken as their coach and Shaun is a cousin of the great Herbie Glacken of the Port Victoria era. The have also recruited from the Amateur League so it will be interesting to see how they get on. Reigning Premier Kadina has retained the services of coach Greg Clarke once again and will be looking for three in a row. They will again be right up there in Premiership favouritism and have lost a few players but with their depth should be able to cover the losses and be a threat again. The CMS Crows has reappointed Jamie Kemp to the top job and he has been on the lookout for new players. Wade Thompson an ex-Power and North Adelaide player joins the club. But the Crows have lost a number of young lads who were on the brink of an A grade future and some had already made the grade. The Dixey boys - Jarryd and Kieran have returned to Port Districts along with Shay Wilkinson and Rick Hodgkinson. Others who have departed are Tom Bailie, Jo and Darren Parsons. The Crows are not the only team to lose players as bottom end neighbour Southern Eagles have also lost a number of their younger brigade plus a veteran who has called it day. Jon Coombe has finally retired, having threatened to do so for a number of years, this time he has kept his promise. The Eagles have reappointed Daniel Goldsmith as their coach. Ardrossan are struggling in the junior grades for numbers and this does not auger well for the future of the club. Craig Wilson will coach with Brendan McKeough (Reynella) a key recruit along with Theo Cotsaris and David Bickmore (Aldinga) to join the club from the Southern Footy League. Last year’s cellar dwellers Central Yorke Cougars will continue with Justin McCormack as coach, after he took over midway through 2011. The Cougars appeared to have recruited far and wide, with Brad Hudson (CMS Crows) and Damien Hillebrand (Gawler Central) amongst many who come to the Club. Damien is the son of Glenn Hillebrand who played in the 1986 and 1988 Premierships with Arthurton. Umpires Des Fuss is the new umpires coach and he has reported that they have a squad of 19 lads on the training track. Former umpires John Millard and Jason Brown are two who have returned to the fold. The hierarchy of the league have remained with Brad Haylock as President, Phil Brand as Secretary and Ian Rayner the master of the purse strings. Games this weekend have Paskeville hosting the CMS Crows, Kadina hosting Ardrossan for the annual “Back to the Bloods” weekend, Wallaroo play host to the Southern Eagles and The CY Cougars are opening their season against Moonta at Maitland. Bute has the bye. KADINA MAKE IT BACK TO BACK OVER BUTE by Kenn Rogers at Yorketown Oval - Sunday 18 September 2011 Kadina sat at the top of the tree all season and were the side to beat for the premiership. They did not let their supporters down before a crowd of over 4,000 at Yorketown on Saturday as they managed to score goals instead of points to defeat Bute for the 2011 flag. Despite having the same number of shots each the scores were reversed with Kadina being 13-9 and Bute 9-13, however the game was still in doubt late into the final term. Bute opened the game kicking to the northern end of the ground with a strong cross wind from west to east after an entertaining rendition of Advance Australia Fair. Kadina opened the scoring after seven minutes of torrid tackling and poor kicking due to the pressure from both sides. Bute replied with a point three minutes later and this was the scenario for most of the term until Josh Lawson broke free and booted a good goal for Kadina at the 19 minute mark. Slade replied a short time later for Bute with their first goal a couple of minutes later. Cam Miller took the ball from the centre bounce and had a long shot only to see the ball hit the goal post high up to have the scores at the first change, Bute ahead 1-5 to Kadina 1-4. The long awaited clash of Serle and Caleb Prime did not eventuate as Ben Nelson had the task of handling Serle and did a good job. Bute opened the second term with a brilliant goal from Ben Adams within ten seconds of the bounce but the game changed as goals dried up for both sides. Jack Kenny had the opportunity to score a full pointer running into an open goal only to miss kick and score a behind. Kadina were held to one point for most of the term until Serle managed to break free to score his first goal , which was followed by a good goal from Joel Phillips. For the rest of term they held play in their forward lines and did not give Bute the opportunity to score. Derek Sansbury and Simon Kretschmer were impassable in defence for the Bloodhounds which helped give a narrow lead to his side at the half time break, Kadina were 4-5 to Bute 2-8. Kadina played brilliantly in the third term compared to the first half as Lawson, Lee, Papps, Harradine, Sansbury and Kretschmer in control of their opponents. Bute had very few winners anywhere on the ground apart from Michael Clinch and Ben Nelson who was still holding Serle extremely well. Highlight of the term was when defenders Sansbury and Kretschmer combined to shoot the ball forward with Kretschmer running down field to kick a goal. This goal set the large crowd alight and lifted a hard tussle of a game to greater heights. Kadina kicked 3-1 to Bute 2-3 with the Bloodhounds 7-6 to Bute 4-11 with a term to play. The opening of the final term saw Bute fire up with a long goal from Shane Slade in the first 30 seconds of the term, however Willis decided to get in on the act and replied shortly after with a good goal. Other goals came from Kadina’s Brett Burnell and Serle to give Kadina breathing space but Bute would not go away with Sam Trengove keeping them in the game. Bute were lacking a top ruckman and Lee was well in control and ably supported by Lawson and Waller. March was having a good battle on the wing with Polkinghorne and Burrnell was in a real tussle with Nathan Hewett. Every time in the final term Kadina looked like having the game in hand Bute kept coming back at them as Clinch and Millard flashed into the game to bridge the gap but were left lamenting of what could have been had they kicked straighter early in the game . Best player afield was Brett Burnell who kicked three goals. Other good players included Derek Sansbury, Simon Kretschmer, and Jono Lee. For Bute, Michael Clinch, Ben Nelson, Dane Avery and Nathan Hewett all did their club proud. Grand Final at Yorketown – September 17, 2011
