DEMONS WIN THEN DRAW AGAINST COUGARS

Moonta and the Cougars played out a draw in slightly controversial circumstances at Maitland last Saturday. When the final siren went it appeared that Demons had got home by a point in a high quality affair, but after consultation between the match officials it was found that one of the goal umpires had not marked down a behind to the Cougars and hence a draw was recorded. For the Cougars, Ben Gunning was best and for Moonta, ruckman Damien Adams continued his superb early season form, being named best.

The Crows travelled to Kadina on top of the ladder and are still there, thanks to a 19 point victory over the Bloodhounds. Accurate kicking for goal saw them in front at half time by 19 points at the main break and despite a surge in the third term from the homeside, the Crows got across the line for their fifth win of the season. Adam Jolly and Ben Millar were best for the Crows while for Kadina, Cam Faulkner was a clear best with five goals, with Cam March and Loren Franz also the best.

At Warooka, the Southern Eagles made easy work of Ardrossan, winning by 113 points. Luke Liddiard along with Mark and Luke Abell were, the homeside having 11 different goalkickers. For the Roos, who have now lost their last four games, Luke Wood and Daniel Kunhdt were their best.

Bute made it three on the trot with 23 point win at home again Paskeville. The ran riot in the opening term adding 6.9 to 1.1, before the Magpies fought back in the second term to get the margin back to 12 points at the long break. The flow of scoring eased slightly in the second half, with the Roosters doing enough to get home, the win putting them into the top five. Bute’s best were Justin Hoare and Shane Slade while for Paskeville, Travis Crowell kicked five goals with Matthew Rodda and Paul Herde in the best.

This week in Pink Round, the Cougars head to Kadina pushing for a spot in the five, Moonta hosts Bute, Wallaroo will be looking to get off the bottom of the ladder at Ardrossan while the CMS Crows play Paskeville at Stansbury

ARTHURTON LEGEND - GEORGE TUCKER DIES AGED 86

Former Arthurton Football Club Legend George Tucker passed away on April 22, 2009. George was an outstanding footballer for Arthurton in the 1950’s & 60’s captaining the club and was part of the 1955 Premiership win over Point Pearce, the clubs first flag since 1934. If Arthurton ever picks an All-time best team of the club, Tucker would certainly get a start either as an on-baller or a small forward. His efforts for Arthurton with Jack Olive during that have always been highly regarded.

He was also an outstanding Cricketer in the local area and was passionate and very poficient about Golf and Lawn Bowls later in his life when he retired from the family farm to live in Maitland. At the time of his passing, George was 86 years of age. His funeral was held on Monday April 27, 2009 in a packed church in Maitland.

BUTE KNOCKS OFF THE CROWS, MOONTA BEAT LAST YEARS PREMIERS

Bute finally scored its first win of the season with a 3 point victory over the CMS Crows at Curramulka. In tough conditions the Roosters showed tenacity to grab the Premiership Points, a loss would have had them 0/3 and in real strife. They were looking down the barrel early as the Crows did well (without Troy Clements) with the wind kicking 4.6 to nil in the first term. Bute they rallied in the second to add 5.7 to nil to lead by 7 points at the main break. Again the Crows held Bute scoreless, 4.6 to nil in the third, before Bute ran home strongly adding 4.5 to 0.3 to gain their first win. All goals in the match were scored from the one end of the ground.

The Roosters can thank Chris Langford and Shane Slade who played well, as did Michael Polkinghorne who kicked two vital goals in the last term. While the homeside, Michael Cook and Adam Jolly played well in a losing cause.

Moonta maintained its unbeaten form with a 47 point win over the Southern Eagles at Yorketown. In a tight first three quarters, the Demons pulled away in the last term adding 6.3 to 1.1 to run away with the victory. Nick Blight and Zeb Drogemuller played well while up forward Adam Forth kicked four goals on a day that hardly suited forwards.

Kadina burst Wallaroo’s bubble with a 25 point away win in Bulldog territory. They should have led by more at quarter time and indeed half time, with a indifferent 4.11 on the board. Their defence was rock solid only conceding one goal to three quarter time with Cam Faulkner and Mark Obushak playing well. For the Dogs, Brenton Meier and Michael Taylor tried hard, some pride salvaged with them winning the final term.

Paskeville recorded its first win of the season, at home to Ardrossan by 30 points. The win was set up in the first term as they added 4.5 to 0.2. The Roos fought hard in the second term to beg back the  advantage but it wasn’t enough. Stuart Daniel and Jake Herde were best for the Maggies while George Rowntree and Scott Teakle were best for Ardrossan.

This week, Moonta heads to Ardrossan to maintain its unbeaten record, Wallaroo heads south to play the Crows at Stansbury, the Cougars come off the bye with a visit from Pasky and Kadina and the Southern Eagles meet at Kadina.

ARDROSSAN CAUSE UPSET IN THE OPENING ROUND

Ardrossan caused an upset in the opening round by defeating Bute by 25 points. The Roos, who managed only 3 wins a draw in 2008, proved too good for last years Minor Premiers at Ardrossan. Scott Teakle and George Rowntree were best with Alex Pierson having a day out up forward kicking five goals. For the Roosters, Chris Langford and Randall Cock played well, with gun forward Haydn Cock restricted to two goals

Moonta proved too good for Kadina in the battle of the “Cousin Jack” neighbours, winning by 51 points. Damien Adams played well in his first game since moving from the Cougars as did Ricky Mackereth and Zeb Drogemuller. Alex Forth was in fine touch up forward kicking six goals.

After a tight first quarter at Maitland, the Crows defeated the Cougars by 79 points. The Crows led 3.4 to 3.2 but broke away in the second term to add 4.5 to 1.0 to lead by 25 points at the main break. An even third term followed, but in the last the visitors superior fitness prevailed, adding 10.3 to 1.2

Adam Jolly and Sam Mumford were best for the Cougars with Wes Farley kicking six goals. For Central Yorke, Adam Hamilton played well with Sam Gunning kicking three goals.

At Yorketown, Southern Eagles well far too good for Wallaroo, the margin of 114 points, the biggest of the opening round. The reigning premiers were tested in the first half, only leading by 21 points, but were far superior in the second, adding 16.4 to 1.1 for a comfortable first up win. Tom Wigley and Shaun McWaters were best for the Eagles while Wallaroo, Ben Abela and Brenton Cuthill played well.

Easter is a week off for the YPFL, but after the break, Kadina hosts Ardrossan which should be an interesting game, The Cougars travel to Bute both seeking their first win of the season, Wallaroo hosts Paskeville who come off the bye and the Southern Derby between the Eagles and Crows will be at Curramulka. Moonta has the bye after its opening round win over Kadina
