GRAND FINAL AT WALLAROO - KADINA 12.11 (83) DEF BUTE 7.8 (50)
REPORT - Lawrie Colliver, Editor Countryfooty.com.au
Sunday September 19, 2010
Kadina produced a dominant display in winning the 2010 YPFL Grand Final by 33 points. In what was expected to be a close affair, the Bloodhounds ran away to a 32 point lead in the first term and were never headed. Bute put up a fight in the middle two terms and got to within 4 goals in the last term, but in the end Kadina’s desire and a strong midfield proved too strong as they won their first Premiership since 2002.
In windy conditions, Kadina kicked to the Netball court end in the first term and dominated play from the word go. Ruckman Jon Lee was dominating at the centre tap outs and a strong midfield was providing numerous opportunities for tall forwards Willy Serle (2 goals), Brendon Papps, Loren Franz who all kicked goals in the first term. Small forward Trevor Harradine was dangerous in the first quarter which saw the Bloodhounds lead 5.4 to 0.2.
Bute were trying hard but couldn’t get clear possessions, with Kadina tackling superbly from the get go. Bute’s Mail Medalist Sam Trengove was working hard but under pressure most of the time, while Chris Langford was getting most of his possessions in the back half - at times his disposal by foot let him down.
In the second quarter Kadina goaled early and it looked as though the game was turning into a rout. But the Roosters started to work themselves into the game with Haydn Cock getting his hands on the ball up forward. Nick Polkinghorne and Dan Avery were working hard for Bute getting the ball inside 50 and had Cock made the most of his three set shots, where he only ended up with 1.2, things may have been closer than 36 points at half time.
Kadina were still having their moments, but in general field play Bute were doing well, however their forward line – apart from Cock - wasn’t functioning at all. Scott Gunning was completely unsighted with also some poor disposals from the Roosters causing them problems. Kadina led 7.5 to 1.5 and looked to have the game at their mercy at half time.
The third term opened up with both sides having a crack, Stewart Wehr made his presence felt with some good marking and two vital goals which gave Bute a sniff. After a period of domination from the Roosters, Kadina defender Derek Sansbury found himself forward of centre and charged down to kick a goal which gave the Bloods their 6-goal lead back. His presence in defence all day was vital, but at that moment which he did push forward, it deflated Bute who were starting to look a bit like that side that had won 12 games in the season. Ben Adams was giving some drive across half back for Bute, but again some of his teammates were letting the side down with poor disposal via foot.
Serle also kicked a goal in the third term – his 4th as both sides traded two goals apiece – ¾ time saw Kadina still ahead by 35 points, 9.6 (60) to 3.7 (25)
Bute knew they had to score early and rapidly if there were come home with the breeze and pinch the Grand Final. Finally Scott Gunning came to life and he kicked two early goals, suddenly the Rooster supporters had something to cheer about as they drew inside four goals for the first time since the opening quarter.
With Kadina under threat, Cam Faulkner really came into the game getting the ball forward with five or six key possessions. Trevor Harradine after a couple of quiet terms sprung into action and goaled and then Tim Honner kicked a vital goal with 10 minutes to play, that put the game beyond doubt. Kadina home by a 33 point margin and deservedly so.
Jon Lee was a fine player in the ruck for the Bloodhounds all day and was very deserving of the Best on Ground award. He dominated the centre bounces and took many marks all day around the ground.
Ben Waller was strong around the ground all day, while Cam Faulkner was a hard man to stop around the ball, he had a fine last term when his team needed it. Brendan Papps kicked two goals and was hard to stop up forward while Indigenous duo Trevor Harradine and Derek Sansbury were strong performers, in particular Sansbury who was cool in defence all afternoon.
For the Roosters, Dane Avery was a solid four quarter contributor across half back, sneaking forward to kick a goal in the last term when Bute made its final surge. Benn Adams tried hard in defence all day and won plenty of ball. Adam Cock had a interesting duel with Harradine and split the honours on that match up, while Chris Langford who was obviously playing under a fitness cloud played well early but faded as the match wore on. Matthew Millard worked hard up forward and Nick Polkinghorne had his moments on the wing when the pressure was on.
All up, Kadina were deserved Premiers, their first flag since 2002.

WALLAROO BEAT BUTE, PASKY WIN AT EDITHBURG
There were a couple of upsets in Round 13 of the YPFL, the first being Wallaroo's defeat of Bute by 43 points. Bute started well, leading by 14 points at quarter time, but could only manage two goals for the rest of the match as the Bulldogs defence dug its toes in at its home ground. Wallaroo stitched up the game in the third term adding 5.2 to 1.1 with Brad Pearce kicking 4 goals for the match, Jake Summerton and Matthew Grillett were strong in their teams 7th win of the season. For Bute, only Nathan Hewett, Shane Slade and Sam Whelan were sighted in the best players list, in what was a poor performance coming off the bye.
Paskeville traveled to Edithburg as underdogs against the Southern Eagles, but came away winners by 33 points. At home, Bute scored an important win in the top of the table clash against the Southern Eagles, winning by 33 points. For Pasky, Stuart and Mike Daniel were best in a losing side.
Ardrossan travelled to Stansbury with high hopes against the CMS Crows, but it wasn’t to be with the homeside winning easily by 82 points. EAGLES COACH GREEN LOOKS FOR CONSOLIDATION IN 2010
by Lawrie Colliver
Inside the bowels of the Vetnor Hotel in Port Vincent is a man in his fifties running what is a very busy establishment. Situated in a prime spot in the town, it’s been another summer of busy trade at the pub smack bang in the middle of one of Yorke Peninsula’s most popular tourist spots. But once the holiday makers leave and many think about a new year of school, some of the focus can shift from the Hotel to the coming football season. For Publican and two-time Premiership coach Peter Green, his mind begins to turn to the Southern Eagles who are striving to go for their third flag in a row in 2010.
“Winning isn’t everything and the focus will be getting the club into a position where it was be competitive long after I am gone” says Green on the eve of what may be a history maker for the Southern Eagles, the result of a merge in the mid 1990’s of Southern Yorke Peninsula teams - Yorketown, Warooka and Edithburg.
Was it easy to be talked back into coaching again?
“One footy-trip too many” was his quick response when Green was asked why he was back on board again. But the real reasons on Green’s mind were to ensure the club was strong in the years to come.
“The main focus will be on developing the younger players, particularly the ones who were involved in the 2008 premiership. At the forefront of my mind for this year is the long term and ensuring the Southern Eagles are competitive for the next ten years.”
Delegation of responsibility has been a big theme so far in 2010, with B Grade coach Daniel Goldsmith and key-player Luke Abell, taking much of the pre-season training so far. Green sees it as part of a possible succession plan after being talked into coaching the team after back to back flags.
Having Coached at Mt Torrens, Ardrossan, Arthurton and now the Southern Eagles Green is one of the most experienced coaches going around in the competition and this plays its part on match day.
“I do have a good bench, but I also have a few people around the ground who provide feedback during the game. Often if something does happen on the bench, you can get a bit too focused on that and forget what else is going on in the game. It’s an advantage to have others at points around the ground and not just in the box keeping a eye on things.”
Green is all about getting more people involved with the club. The Eagles will also use 2 or 3 runners this season, giving the opportunity for others to be involved in the team. “They will also sit it on selection at various times during the season to experience and understand how the process works. It’s also handy to have a back up plans as well.”
The club will experience some player turnover this year, with four of last years team missing. Tom Wigley, who was best on ground in the Grand Final, returns to Adelaide, Jacob Selfe is heading for Noarlunga in the Southern League, Dion Woolford is returning to the family farm at Buckleeboo on the West Coast and John Preiss is heading to Jamestown having picked up an apprenticeship. But the good news is that Sam and Jack Barlow return to the team having traveled overseas in 2009. “It will be good to have to lads back, who were part of the 2008 Final win.”
There are a few other recruits in the pipeline ahead of the first game on April 10 at Kadina, which Green thinks will be a tough one first up.
“Kadina appear to be the big improvers at this stage along with Bute who have a couple of new recruits” says Green who faces those teams in the opening games of 2010. Ahead of that, the club has a couple of trial games, playing Hills Club Lobethal away on Saturday March 20, before hosting United from the Adelaide Plains League on Sunday March 28.
In the past two seasons the club has had an incredible finals record – having won 7 out of 7 – despite having won only 18 games in the minor round over the same period. Giving the players the power to make their own decisions is an important key thing in the mind of Green when he is coaching. “I want the players to be resourceful enough to be able to make their own mind up when they have a split second to make a decision on the ground. Giving the younger players the confidence to make the call is important, if it turns out to be wrong, we can always reassess later at a break in the game.”
“The good thing about the club is we have a youthful group, which is responding well now, this is the year for us to establish the club for the years to come.”
