Still plenty to sort out on the Plains
July 11, 2019
WHAT loomed as a fairly straightforward season continues to present surprise results, with five teams genuinely in the hunt for a top four finish with six rounds to go.
United has reversed its poor start to the season with four wins on the trot between Landmark Cup and the State Country Championships, including a stirring upset over Mallala in Round 9.
With a rapidly reducing injury list, the Tigers are primed to test the top four sides as they press for finals action for the first time since 2011.
Top of the table is Hummocks-Watchman Eagles, having only lost the two matches this season, to Balaklava and Two Wells, both last year’s grand finalists.
The Eagles enjoyed a stunning comeback against the Peckers a few weeks ago but they really should have accounted for Two Wells at Port Wakefield in Round 7, which was without a handful of guns.
Mallala finds itself in second spot, with fluctuating form, given the Magpies knocked off both Balaklava and Two Wells in recent weeks, with a relatively undermanned squad in both those matches.
But then they dropped the easiest match of the three, against rivals United, to again raise questions about where exactly they are at.
Question marks are also surfacing at Two Wells, arguably still the team to beat but sitting in third on the table.
The Roosters have dropped a match to Balaklava and been beaten by Mallala twice, while the forfeited points from Round 1 could become a factor later this season.
The ongoing fitness of Bryce Hart (elbow) and Shannon Slattery (knee) will also be crucial in coming weeks.
Balaklava slides into fourth, also capable of beating anyone on its day but the recent upset to Mallala, a match the Peckers were expected to win, means they have lost twice to the Magpies, while also going down once each to fellow top four contenders, Two Wells and HWE.
Virginia lurks in sixth, far more competitive than it was at the start of the season but still a fair way off the other five sides, while Angle Vale’s promising start to the year has faded with big defeats at the hands of both Balaklava and United, effectively ensuring they will remain in seventh position.
Hamley Bridge changed coaches just after the June long weekend, with assistant, Craig Calliess, taking over from Andrew Roe.
The Bombers have been more competitive but still a good 15 to 30 goals off the sides above them.

ROUND FIVE WRAP – MAY 26, 2019
VIRGINIA was talk of the competition on Saturday evening, the Rams destroying previously unbeaten Mallala by 40 points in the wet.
The victory wasn’t completely out of the blue, given the form the Rams were building following solid efforts against Two Wells and Balaklava in consecutive weeks.
Perhaps the bigger bodies and improving fitness base, and some familiarity amongst each other, were the factors for the big margin.
Former Sturt/Woodville West Torrens utility, Lee Staple, has been a big factor for Virginia, taking over the key defensive role.
Tyson Panagiotou has also flourished since returning after a bewilderingly bad year with South Gawler.
Brendon Niklaus looks to be regaining some touch following indifferent form too, with 18 goals to his name and a home match against Hamley Bridge looming.
Mallala’s loss could be just a blip on the radar, given the Magpies have been playing some handy footy to date.
If we deduct the two premiership points to come off Two Wells’ season tally on the ladder, Mallala sits second on percentage with a game against the Bombers to come.
The Magpies have blooded several kids, including Cam Curnow, Jack Heaslip, Henry Crossman and Jakob Baker.
Key players, Angus Bruggemann, Rob Montgomery and Troy Algar have also missed large portions of the season to date, so there’s a lot of upside there still.
HWE sits (technically) top but comes up against Mallala this week, which will really test the Eagles.
They got the points over Angle Vale on a dour day but were perhaps better than the final margin of 35 points suggested.
Henry Wright is in close contention for the leading goal kicker stakes, with 34, one behind Caleb Edmead of Two Wells on 35.
Two Wells, aside from an admin blunder in round one and a surprise loss to Mallala, again appear to be the team to beat.
Usually it’s the likes of Ned Seccafien and Tyrell Hocking leading the way but at the moment, Bryce Hart is certainly getting the nod from the coaching group for his tireless work rate.
Michael Abdilla is also getting the best out of himself to date, with 14 goals to his name.
The Roosters did a number on United in Round 5, keeping the Tigers to just two goals for the match.
It is shaping as another close but no cigar season under the water tower.
Recruits including Dylan Loveridge and Seb Quaini have been good, but replacing the leadership of Simon Tyler and Matt Wiestra from defence has proven more than difficult to date.
The weather gods turned it on for Hamley Bridge on Saturday, a first quarter downpour ensuring the scores didn’t get out of hand initially.
Balaklava took control as conditions improved with 15 goals to one over a tiring but game Bomber outfit, which desperately needs some numbers and quality to support the brave hearts out there.
Shane Moss, who kicked 100 goals last year, booted 10 but has better form ahead of him.
Young ruckman, Sam Michael, has arguably been Balaklava’s best player this season, and if the Eagles won’t have him in town, he looks set to play a big role with the Peckers in 2019.
They have just entered the top four and are yet to have their full complement on the deck.

Round Three Report – Mallala are a Premiership Threat
May 12, 2019
The ladder is starting to take shape, with Mallala announcing itself as a premiership threat after defeating Balaklava, while Two Wells bounced back over rivals Virginia.
The Roosters will be a bit behind the eight-ball after losing the points from its win over Balaklava in round one when it was revealed they had breached their player points quota.
Oddly enough, Balaklava wasn’t awarded the points from that fixture either.
Anyway, it means both the Peckers and Roosters are sitting on the one win after three matches, along with Angle Vale and Virginia.
HWE and United bob up with two wins from three and Hamley Bridge firmly at the foot of things, yet to taste success.
Mallala remains unbeaten at the top of the APFL ladder following a gritty 16-point win over Balaklava in cool, greasy conditions at Mallala.
Defence was order of the day for the Magpies, with Jake ‘Hammer’ Birchmore on top across half back, while Rob Montgomery continues to hold down a key role in the Mallala back six.
Aaron Fox bobbed up with four opportunist goals in a game that didn’t deliver much as a spectacle.
Rookie, Stewart McRostie, was sensational deep in defence for Balaklava, keeping Riley Thorne extremely quiet.
Sam Michael had the better of the ruck duel against Reyner Clarke but Mallala was more efficient with its inside 50s overall.
Elsewhere, Ned Seccafien’s 200th senior game for Two Wells will be one to remember, the Roosters smacking rivals, Virginia, by 77 points.
Two Wells really ran away with the game in the last quarter, slamming on eight goals to nothing.
Caleb Edmead regained some form after a quiet match against Mallala, booting five goals.
Versatile midfielder, Bryce Hart, and slippery winger, Jamie Humphrys, were best for the Roosters.
Veteran, Chris Motley, battled hard for the Rams, supported by recruits, Joel Holloway and former Brisbane Lion, Callum Bartlett.
Angle Vale looks destined to finish in seventh spot again after United accounted for the Owls after an even first half.
The Tigers booted seven goals to nothing in a rampant third quarter and were virtually unchallenged from that point.
Georg Brice-Marwood was named best for United, a positive sign for the youngster from the South East after spending a lot of time in the B grade last season. Heath Pym kicked five goals for the victors.
Tall utility, Trent Payne, is having a good season so far for Angle Vale, and was named best again this week, along with up and coming star, Lachlan Mitchell.
HWE then atoned for last week’s loss to Balaklava with a big win over Hamley Bridge.
Henry Wright slammed home 13 goals for the Eagles, taking his season tally to 24 from three matches, while recruit, Jordan Bailey, was named best.
Jake Medhurst was once again a key contributor for the Bombers, along with Sam Collings and Lachlan Connor.

ROUND ONE REPORT – April 28, 2019
Two Wells confirmed its premiership favouritism with a solid five-goal win over last year’s bridesmaid, Balaklava. The Roosters kicked away early with the Peckers relatively inaccurate and they were never able to eat into the margin from quarter time, despite enjoying good periods of control from that point. Caleb Edmead starred in his first game for the club, booting four goals. His presence in the air for a mid-sized forward was also a factor.
Over at Angle Vale, the Owls did a number on a rebuilding Hamley Bridge side under new coach, Andrew Roe, the Bombers going down by 100 points. HWE ran Virginia ragged, despite the high profile recruits of Lee Staple, Callum Bartlett and Dylan Jessen coming in for the Rams. Josh Appleby was superb for the Eagles and recruit, Henry Wright, won some fans in his first game for the club, booting seven goals.
Mallala got the job done in comprehensive fashion over United on Anzac Day, but it may come at a cost, with rumours Angus Bruggemann has reinjured his troublesome ACL. In brighter news for the Magpies, Cameron Curnow shone on debut off of a wing, while Joel Montgomerie showed he’s still a star, winning the best on ground medal.
