VICTOR CLAIM SECOND BIG SCALP IN A ROW

Round 12 wrap – July 11, 2010 Victor Harbor maintained its chance for a top three spot with a 26 point win over Willunga. The Kangaroos had a brilliant start, kicking seven goals to one in the first term to set up a gap that hardly closed all day. Luke Whatman and Denis Iljecesen were best with Luke and Dale Ellis slotting home four goals each. For Willunga, Wes Glass and Matthew Bennett, with David Hams restricted to just two goals for the day. Yankalilla maintained top spot with 49 point win over McLaren. Glenn Dundovic continued his fine year with seven goals to move to 71 for the season, with Damien Williss and skipper John Pratt (4 goals) the other stars of the day. For McLaren, Daniel Loots and Anthony Natale were named in the best. Strathalbyn narrowly kept second place on the ladder with a tight 10 point win over Langhorne Creek. Despite trailing by 43 points at the main break, the Langhorne hung in their but just couldn’t bridge the gap. For the Roosters, Ben Wilson kicked three goals while for Langhorne Creek, skipper Damien James and Shane Rothe played well. Myponga Sellicks finally scored a win with a 19 point victory over Goolwa Port Elliott. After failing to score in the first term they added 6.1 to nil to set up the winning margin for coach Clay Sampson. Mt Compass scored a comfortable 94 point win over Encounter Bay. A seven goal first term set up the match, sadly the Eagles could only manage one goal in the first three quarters. Jamahl Liddle (6 goals) and Ziggy Vitkunas were the best for Mt Compass while for Encounter Bay, who are now bottom of the ladder, Cameron Lintern and Dylan Frank tried hard. DAY VICTOR UPSETS STRATH, YANK GOES TO TOP SPOT Victor Harbor upset top side Strathalbyn, winning by 6 points. The homeside had obvious chances to win the last term when they added an inaccurate 3.5 to 3.0, but failed to get their noses in front when it counted at the final siren. Best for the Kangaroo’s was Tim Boyd thanks to his five goals, along with Luke Whatman and Cam Simmons. Best for Strath were Ben Cousins and Ashley Weckert. With Strathalbyn losing, Yankalilla took over top spot, thanks to a 35 point win at Encounter Bay. The Eagles put up a decent fight after last weeks massive loss to Willunga, getting to within 3 goals in the second half, before the Tigers pulled away in the last term to secure their 10th win of the season. Best for Tigers were Peter McFarlane and star forward Glenn Dundovic, who kicked eight goals to now have 64 for the season. For Encounter Bay,  Jacob Baggs and Aaren Harvey played well. Mt Compass grabbed their 5th win of the season, beating McLaren by three points. The homeside led by what appeared to be a comfortable margin of 22 points at three quarter time before McLaren mounted a late challenge, adding 6.2 to 3.1 in last term. It wasn’t enough to get them over line, despite the best efforts of Chris Johnson and Elliott Schneider (3 goals) and 15 year-old Braden Altus did very well, kicking four goals on debut. For the victors, Shaun Maxfield and Jamahl Liddle were the stars, with Liddle’s eight goal haul his best for the season which has yielded 37 goals. The remaining games were very one sided, Langhorne Creek defeating Goolwa/Port Elliott by 150 points with Paul Sherwood on fire kicking ten goals and Ben Moore on fire also, kicking six. The Magpies defence had little answer as Sam Jones and Zac Ewer both gave their all. While Willunga thrashed Myponga Sellicks by 88 points, with David Hams kicking six goals to move to 61 for 2010 to be on track for another century season. Round 11 scores – June 26, 2010
