MAGPIES FLYING HIGH AFTER TOPPLING GLENCOE IN GRAND FINAL
by Terry Willoughby – Sepointember 24, 2019
Kalangadoo, a MSE powerhouse team in the past 20 years, came into this Grand Final as the underdog but not without plenty of support. Glencoe, on the other hand were warm favourites after disposing of minor premier, Hatherleigh in the second Semi.
The first quarter was an even affair with both teams booing three goals but Kalangadoo wasted several chances with poor finishing. Former Magpie coach, Ben Mules, was already looming as a threat to the Glencoe defence and at the other end the Kalangadoo were combining well to restrict the normally prolific scoring Glencoe forwards. Kalangadoo were on the march early in the second term and started to control play all around the ground. Glencoe’s height advantage seemed of little use as Kalangadoo bypassed the “talls” at every opportunity with Ethan Maney and Chris Mules outstanding on the backline. Ben Mules was now having more influence for Kalangadoo as the Glencoe failed to man-up on many occasions and he punished them with goals and assists and the Magpies went to the long break with an 11 point lead.
Glencoe managed two goals for the quarter but Kalangadoo seemed to score at double the rate. Leading goal-kicker Brodie Foster was well held and Glencoe had no other options up forward. Whilst play was not high-scoring Kalangadoo were always in control with Ben Mules dominating at one end with Brett Lindner winning plenty of touches around the midfield and the defence led by Maney, Bannister and Chris Mules shutting out most Glencoe attacks. Tom Edwards on the ball, veterans Zac Cocks and Martin were battling hard but with little result as Kalangadoo again outscored them with 4 goals to two and the margin blew out to 24 points at the last change.
Glencoe looked a bedraggled team as the last quarter began and the buoyant Kalangadoo were letting them know all about it. They were in no mood to let the game coast to the finish and rammed through another 5 goals without a miss to win easily by 34 points. Ben Mules booted 7 goals in an outstanding game and defenders Maney, Bannister and Chris Mules were excellent performers for Kalangadoo. For Glencoe it was a disappointing finish after promising much.
HATHERLEIGH CRASH OUT OF FINALS IN STRAIGHT SETS
by Terry Willoughby – September 16, 2019
Minor premiers Hatherleigh crashed out of the finals with a limp effort against a hardened Kalangadoo by 57 points. Kalangadoo, whose finals hopes looked wobbly midway through the season, overcame a sluggish start in which they conceded an early burst of goals including two from Brad Wight. The Magpies reeled the lead and trailed by just three points at quarter time with growing confidence and momentum. Ben Gregory and Lindner were winning many possessions across the midfield and also contributing on the scoreboard whilst defenders Lowe and Auld made life difficult for the Hatherleigh forwards. Kalangadoo were in control early in the second term and Hatherleigh were having little impact ahead of centre when Kalangadoo applied the brakes on scoring. A four goal to two quarter gave Kalangadoo a nine point lead at the long break.
Hatherleigh fell away badly in the third term as Kalangadoo dominated around the stoppages and midfield with Ben Mules and Gregory goaling as the Hatherleigh defence unravelled. The minor premier was in serious trouble approaching the last quarter as the Magpies had booted five goals to a lonely one and bolted to a 37 point lead. Hatherleigh had few consistently good players with only Jason and Matt Faulkner and Bateman showing much resistance. Kalangadoo bolted further ahead in the last quarter as Hatherleigh showed signs of surrender. Adding another five goals to a token two, Kalangadoo cleared right ahead to win by 57 points over a bedraggled Hatherleigh and will now meet arch-enemy Glencoe in next week’s Grand Final at Mt Burr.

GLENCOE RUN ROUGHSHOD OVER MINOR PREMIERS HATHERLEIGH IN SECOND SEMI
by Terry Willoughby – September 8, 2019
A switched-on Glencoe were quick to test Hatherleigh’s resolve in the rough weather at the bay when they bounced out of the blocks with a six goal first quarter. The threatening forwards of Glencoe had the Hatherleigh defence in trouble from the start and although Hatherleigh goaled twice they trailed by 22 points. The second quarter was crucial for Hatherleigh who needed a big lift but many players seemed off the boil. Telfer was Hatherleigh’s major contributor but he was playing a lone hand and Glencoe matched Hatherleigh almost goal for goal and the margin was still a healthy 17 points at halftime.
Glencoe sensed Hatherleigh’s discomfort in the conditions and went further ahead in the third quarter and despite inaccuracy held Hatherleigh scoreless for the term. Bates, Clay von Duve and Edwards were the prime movers for Glencoe who now led by 40 points and in complete control. Hatherleigh were a beaten side with only a handful of players showing much fight. Glencoe roared again in the last quarter to boot five goals to just one from Hatherleigh and win by 64 points and a place in the Grand Final. Hatherleigh looked shattered and now look a forlorn chance for even next week’s prelim final against Kalangadoo.

KALANGADOO ELIMINATE REIGNING PREMIERS ROBE FROM FINALS SERIES
by Terry Willoughby, September 3, 2019
Robe with seven players returning after long term injury embarked on a strategy that left them exposed for fitness and form. Robe made a slow start in very windy conditions and Kalangadoo although not very effective led by nine points at quarter time with Bannister defending strongly and Stone lively around the stoppages. Robe sharpened in the second term with Cuthbertson the target up forward and the reliables, Wehl, Dickinson and Deane providing extra drive. The Roosters booted 4 goals to just a minor score from Kalangadoo to lead by 17 points at the long break.
The real test came in the third quarter where Kalangadoo started to get more of the ball and Robe looked shaky with players showing signs of fatigue and match fitness. A lone goal aids them with a two point lead at three quarter-time but they look very tired. Coach jack Kelly has hardly had a possession and others squander theirs with poor finishing. Kalangadoo outscored them and now have momentum with Ben Gregory having a strong influence. The last quarter is all Kalangadoo as they add four goals and Robe struggle to go forward for their only one. Injuries and lack of match hardness have taken their toll and Kalangadoo come away with an 11 point win and a place in the preliminary final.

GLENCOE STUN LEAGUE LEADER IN SURPRISE RESULT
by Terry Willoughby August 26, 2019
In the final round Robe were hoping for a Hatherleigh win so that they would regain the double chance but Glencoe had other ideas! The Murphies were switched from the outset and led for all but a brief moment before halftime. Leading goal-kicker Brodie Foster was presenting Hatherleigh with headaches around the goal-front and veterans, Cocks, Clay von Duve and Tom Edwards were prominent around the stoppages and midfield to give Glencoe a lead of eight points at quarter time. Hatherleigh were only spluttering along but contained the Glencoe ball-movers in the second term through McGrath and Wight and narrowly reach a three point lead at halftime. The stage was set for a tight finish but Glencoe stormed away with an 8 goal burst in the third quarter to stun Hatherleigh. They won the ball across the middle and at stoppages and the forwards did the rest to give Glencoe a 29 point lead at three quarter time and seemingly on the road to victory. Hatherleigh were now in serious trouble but had little in reserve as the last quarter began and Glencoe seized their chances and stormed ahead to boot another 4 goals to one and record a 49 point win and more importantly a psychological edge over Hatherleigh who disappointed after halftime. The two teams meet again in two weeks in the second semi-final.
GLENCOE 17-14 116 TOO STRONG FOR HATHERLEIGH 10-7 67
Robe’s bid to regain the double chance was in the hands of others as they set about punishing Nngwarry. The Roosters piled on the goals early and Nangwarry provided no resistance. The score mounted steadily at one end but not with the usual rapidity in the windy conditions. Deane with seven goals, Sawyer six and Lockwood five had a day out as Robe racked up percentage and Nangwarry remained goal-less and plunged to another soul destroying loss, this time by 190 points but it didn’t help Robe’s bid for the double chance one jot!
ROBE 28-26 194 SMASHED NANGWARRY 0-4 4
Mt Burr had an easy 61 point win over the disappointing Tantanoola for whom the season couldn’t finish soon enough. Mt Burr were hardly their usual ruthless self, considering they will miss finals for the first time in years and only raced clear in the third quarter after holding Tant scoreless. Jack Gregory booted nine goals for the Mozzies but they counted for little at the end.
MT BURR 15-12 102 EASILY DEFEATED TANTANOOLA 6-5 41
Port MacDonnell had a comfortable 28 point win over arch-rival Kongorong which gives them little more than an off-season worth of bragging rights. Port Mac were in front from the opening siren but Kongorong challenged strongly in the third quarter to draw within a goal. Port Mac steadied in the last quarter and booted four goals to snuff out the Kongorong challenge to win another local derby.

ROBE’S PREMIERSHIP REPEAT ON SHAKY GROUND
by Terry Willoughby, August 19, 2019
Robe tumbled to third spot on the ladder after being outplayed by Hatherleigh for most of the game. Hatherleigh may have led only narrowly at the first change but were much better in terms of how they were playing. They continued to call the tune in the second term when they could have sewn the game up but wayward kicking for goal enabled Robe to be within striking distance but in reality not close at all. Play was constantly in Hatherleigh’s half of the ground with Robe having only one winner ahead of centre in Cuthbertson who finished with seven goals. Robe always seemed in damage control whilst Hatherleigh had many good plyers headed by McGrath, Waring, Leek, Parish and McGregor.
HATHERLEIGH 14-21 105 TOO GOOD, ROBE 9-6 60
Arch-rivals Mt Burr and Kalangadoo went hammer and tongs in the first half with the Magpies getting on top just before the halftime break to lead by 19 points. Ben Mules and Andrew Stone had given Kalangadoo a more potent look on the forward line and Mt Burr struggled to hold them. Mt Burr, despite missing finals tried hard to resurrect some respect and booted four goals to two in the third quarter and moved within a goal at three quarter time but Kalangadoo responded in style with seven goals in the last quarter to run out winners by 38 points. Ben Mules booted five goals and Stone four with Maney, Fatchen and Casey among the best players.
KALANGADOO 17-12 114 COMFORTABLY DEFEATED MT BURR 11-10 76
Tantanoola’s disastrous year had a high note when the easily defeated Nangwarry by 61 points. Tant made sure of victory with a six goal opening burst from which Nangwarry never recovered. The margin should have been much greater but woeful kicking for goal, particularly in the third term when they managed just two goals from 13 scoring shots hindered Tant’s efforts. Nangwarry’s failure to score in the last quarter sums up the quality of play.
TANTANOOLA 15-23 113 THRASHED NANGWARRY 8-4 52
Glencoe showed no mercy to Port MacDonnell and raced to a five goal lead by quarter-time. Century goal-kicker Brodie Foster was again far too good for the Port Mac defence. Booting another six goals to one in the second quarter sealed Port Mac’s fate with Glencoe 10 goals in front at half-time. Port Mac rallied in the third term and matched Glencoe, at least on the scoreboard but by then all the sting had gone out of the game. Glencoe coasted through the last quarter to win easily 39 points and rise to second spot on the ladder. Foster booted seven goals for the winners.

A ROUND OF GAMES THAT NO FOOTBALL LEAGUE WANTS, TOP 4 PLAYS BOTTOM 4
Terry Willoughby – August 12, 2019
On a day where good football was going to be difficult to play, what with blizzard weather and gale-force winds, the MSEFL had such a round with only game being remotely close to competitive.
Glencoe quickly sliced through the Kongorong defence to lead by six goals at quarter time with leading goal-kicker Brodie Foster eyeing of a sizable bag for the day. Kongorong were barely sighted in the second term as goal tally rose rapidly at the Glencoe end and many others joined in the scoring spree which saw the lead out to 81 points. Glencoe must have paused for breath in the third quarter and only expanded the lead by 17 points but there was still hardly any sign of Kongorong. Foster was still going strongly at full forward for Glencoe as the last quarter got under way and the Glencoe wheels were well pumped as they romped away to a 154 points win. Foster booted 13 goals and has the century in sight. Nothing can be said for Kongorong.
GLENCOE 28-16 184 TOYED WITH KONGORONG 4-6 30
Nangwarry were again on the receiving end of a thrashing, this time from Kalangadoo by 101 points, but it could have been much worse as the Magpies sprayed scoring shots all over the place. Forty-three shots to just seven from Nangwarry suggests how dominant Kalangadoo were. Nangwarry battled hard to stay within touch in the first half but the door blew open in the third quarter and suddenly the Kalangadoo lead was 80 points. Both teams would have been keen to head for the showers but not before Kalangadoo had reached the three figure margin. No player booted more than three goals and Bannister, Stone and Lowe headed the Magpies best players.
KALANGADOO 17-26 128 THRASHED NANGWARRY 4-3 27
A low scoring first quarter suggests that Hatherleigh were not all that keen on being out in the weather at Tantanoola when they led by just 17 points. They put their foot on the pedal in the second term as any Tant resistance fell away and at the long break the Hatherleigh lead was 70 points. The powerful winds made scoring difficult but Tant were simply not good enough to make any use of it! Hatherleigh again roared ahead in the last quarter to win by 118 points. Telfer booted seven goals for Hatherleigh who remain on top of the ladder. Tant may get a little joy out of the season when they play Nangwarry in next week’s final round.
HATHERLEIGH 23-13 151 CRUSHED TANTANOOLA 4-9 33
Robe and Port MacDonnell had the only close game of the round and for much of it Robe looked largely unconvincing which belied their second place status on the ladder. Port Mac, whilst not relishing the conditions which made scoring near impossible, led narrowly by six points at quarter time with Daron McElroy doing well in ruck and around the ground aided by the strong work of Ben McGregor and Wilke. Robe made little headway in the second term as Port Mac maintained a tight grip on the game. Jack Sneath in defence for Robe was doing a man-size job of containing the Port Mac forwards and Lockwood continued to push the ball forward for not much result with Port Mac still four points up. This was Port Mac’s chance to cause a major upset but Robe gathered some momentum in the third quarter and goals to Docking put them in front for the first time and they held the biggest margin of the game when 22 points ahead at three quarter-time. Port Mac weren’t finished with yet but several critical misses enabled Robe to steady and win by 14 points in what could have been a costly defeat.

HATHERLEIGH SURVIVE A SCARE FROM KALANGADOO FROM KALANGADOO
Terry Willoughby – August 5, 2019
Hatherleigh booted six goals in the first quarter and looked set for a good day but Kalangadoo lifted and booted four to stay in touch. The second term was much the same with Hatherleigh leading by eight points.
Kalangadoo drew uncomfortably close to Hatherleigh late in the third quarter. The defences of both teams worked hard to restrict the forwards and goals were hard to come by but Hatherleigh had their noses in front throughout, albeit narrowly. Kalangadoo were all set to mount a challenge when they trailed by just two points entering the last quarter but it was Hatherleigh who finished strongly with four goals to one and eased ahead to win by 17 points. Wight with four goals was best for Hatherleigh, others to play well were Pulmer, Leek, Fabris and Walker. Kalangadoo battled hard but just faded at the finish. Their best were the Casey boys, S and J, Krieger, Auld and Lindner.
HATHERLEIGH 13-9 87 TOO STRONG FOR KALANGADOO 10-10 70
Second placed Robe had a comfortable 26 point win over struggling Kongorong who probably played their best football for the year but all to no avail. Robe led all day and looked set for a big win at quarter time when leading by 21 points but Kongorong lifted strongly with 6 goal burst before half-time to be only nine points down. A shaken –up Robe kicked away in the third term but Kongorong were snapping at their heels but just didn’t have the quality players to match. Scoring slowed right down in the last quarter but Robe were in no danger. Todd Lockwood was outstanding for Robe and booted seven goals, McInnes got five and Deane, Wilfred and Wehl headed the best players. For Kongorong, Brian Cordy with four goals, Modra, Hein and Hann played well.
ROBE 16-11 107 COMFORTABLY OVER KONGORONG 12-9 81
Mt Burr, out of the running for finals for the first time in years had a regulation easy win over Nangwarry by 117 points which is far less than in previous seasons. The Mozzies took a half to really get on top but piled on the goals in the second half, seventeen to four to win easily. Jack Gregory booted eight and Dylan Ridley five for Mt Burr but no finals will seem hollow to them.
MT BURR 24-12 156 THRASHED NANGWARRY 6-3 39
Port MacDonnell’s best form has also come too late but they belted Tantanoola by 100 points. Tant have had a season to forget only wins over Nangwarry. McElroy, Turner and Chant stood out for Port Mac. Not much to be said for Tant whose best was Pitts which is about the position that Tant have been in all year.

SHOCK, HORROR MT BURR SMASHED BY 101 POINTS
by Terry Wiloughby, July 28, 2019
For the first time in years Mt Burr have suffered the sort of humiliating defeat that they have inflicted on every other team in the MSEFL. Hatherleigh , their near geographical rival took the chance to inflict some pain on the Mozzies and didn’t relent at any stage. Averaging almost seven goals per quarter the flat-track bullies that they normally are, Hatherleigh seized the day in no uncertain way! Thirty-five points up at quarter time and 81 at the half-way probably saw most Mt Burr supporters in tears or heading to “can hill”. More was to follow as Hatherleigh pressed on, never letting Mt Burr off the hook. No doubt Mt Burr sensed the possibility of a 100 point loss looming and fought on tenaciously but Hatherleigh had the magic figure in sight all the way to the finish, 101 points! Wight with five goals , McGrath, Walker, Leek and Pulmer headed Hatherleigh’s best but they didn’t have any passengers unlike Mt Burr. Finals are only a dream now for Mt Burr.
HATHERLEIGH 26-15 171 CRUSHED MT BURR 11-4 70
Kongorong very nearly found themselves on the losing end against a team below them on the ladder when Tantanoola, eighth placed led by eight points at ¾three quarter-time and looked set to breakthrough for a belated win. It wasn’t to be however as Kongorong raised enough effort to squeeze past Tant in the closing stages and win by six points in a game that confirmed the status of both teams, seventh and eighth on the ladder.
KONGORONG 10-13 73 JUST OVER TANTANOOLA 10-7 67
Kalangadoo had too much at stake to allow Port MacDonnell a second win in succession when they easily accounted for seasiders by 31 points. Small forward and on-baller Andrew Stone led the way with 5 goals as Kalangadoo had the game safely in their keeping with a 42 point lead at half-time. Port Mac matched the Magpies in the second half but the damage had been done as Kalangadoo cruised to victory safe in the knowledge that they had secured their place in the top four.
KALANGADOO 16-10 106 EASILY DEFEATED PORT MACDONNELL 11-9 75
Robe looked set to record a good win over finals rival Glencoe when they bolted to a 38 point lead by quarter time. Consistently good players Wachtel and Wehl were again instrumental for Robe whilst Glencoe just couldn’t get their hands on the ball enough or indeed at all! Glencoe regrouped and changed all that in the second quarter and slowed Robe’s momentum with Foster and Hentschke getting among the goals. Robe wasted valuable chances to put Glencoe away when they booted only six behinds for the quarter and saw their lead cut to nine points at the long break. Revitalised Glencoe took a big grip on the game with six goals to just two from Robe in the third quarter and led by 16 points at the last change. Foster and Hentschke continued to do the damage and it was Robe now in trouble. The Roosters battled their way back into the game and levelled the scores but again were hampered by poor finishing and Glencoe steadied with two goals to win narrowly by six points and move into second place on the ladder. Robes’ loss drops them to third place and potentially a cut-throat first semi-final.

THRASHINGS NOW THE REGULAR FEATURE
Terry Willoughby – July 22, 2019
The dominance of the top teams on the ladder continues relentlessly in MSE football and would have occurred in all four games but for inaccuracy in one. Tantanoola were unable to kick a goal for three quarters. against Glencoe and were reduced to spectators mostly as the goals piled up at one end. Glencoe’s leading goal-kicker Brodie Foster got in some useful practice to boot 12 whilst Alex Hentschke and McCrae slotted through six and five respectively. Glencoe romped in by 147 points to heap more misery on Tantanoola.
GLENCOE 25-16 166 THRASHED TANTANOOLA 2-7 19
Hatherleigh, the flat track bullies extraordinaire, seem to relish their practice sessions with the lowliest teams and again went to town with Nangwarry to the tune of a 232 point belting. The Telfer boys with eight and seven goals respectively meant that almost every other Hatherleigh player shared the goals.
HATHERLEIGH 39-29 263 BELTED NANGWARRY 4-7 31
Kalangadoo, a former powerhouse team whose form has been shaky at best, were fortunate to be opposed to Kongorong who have graced finals only once since their last premiership in 1988 and sit ingloriously in seventh spot, only able to defeat those in eighth and ninth. The Magpies piled on nine goals to nil in the first quarter and it was game over! Ben Mules, back in the team after a broken arm, led the way with eight goals to be best along with Andrew Stone, Davies and Casey. You could be excused for thinking that Kongorong only have Evans and Hein because they are in the best players every game. Kalangadoo cemented their spot in the top four but that is about all!
KALANGADOO 21-14 140 CRUSHED KONGORONG 3-3 21
Port MacDonnell could have had a win of similar proportions had they made better use of their chances in the first quarter against Mt Burr but three goals from 13 scoring shots was a poor reward for such dominance. Mt Burr recorded only a minor score for the quarter and trailed by 27 points. The gale force winds obviously played havoc with the standards of play but Mt Burr fared little better in the second term and Port Mac held a 24 point lead at half-time. Goals became harder to get in the second half as players tired after being battered by the wind. Port Mac extended their lead to 35 points at three quarter-time, a match-winning one. Despite Mt Burr discovering some form in the last quarter with five goals Port Mac had enough gas left and won by 18 points.

KALANGADOO OUTLAST GLENCOE IN THRILLER
Terry Willoughby, July 7, 2019
Glencoe may have squandered a big chance to inflict a major blow to arch enemy Kalangadoo when they only managed one goal from 8 scoring shots in the first quarter and trailed by a solitary behind. Kalangadoo seized their chances in the second term and booted five goals to hold a 10 point lead going into the second half. Kalangadoo held Glencoe at arm’s length for most of the third quarter and held a seven point lead with only a quarter to play. Small man Andrew Stone was a constant pest for Kalangadoo and had good support from Ben Gregory, Hay and Fatchen. Both teams booted four goals in the final quarter but Kalangadoo held on. Glencoe’s Achilles heel appears to be the reliance on Foster and Ben Hentschke to kick the goals and Kasparian, Edwards and Clay von Duve to be the best players which they again were!
KALANGADOO 14-12 96 HELD ON OVER GLENCOE 13-10 88
Nangwarry suffered in the usual way once again when Port MacDonnell raced to a big lead in the first half. The only difference here was that Port Mac couldn’t turn it into a 200 point shellacking like most others have but then Port Mac are not a top side either.
PORT MACDONNELL 25-9 159 THRASHED NANGWARRY 7-7 49
Mt Burr made short work of the perennially under-performing Kongorong by 94 points to stay on the periphery of the top four, they are currently locked in a battle for fourth spot with Kalangadoo. Six goals in each of the first quarters. put paid to any lingering doubts of Kongorong’s chances. Two different goal-kickers in Scott with five and Dowdy with four bobbed up for the Mozzies with Davis another new name in the best players along with stalwart Nick Morrison. Evans, Weaver and Hein were the only Kongorong battlers to show out.
MT BURR 20-9 129 CRUSHED KONGORONG 5-5 35
The final game of the round typified most MSE games when the top teams meet the bottom four, it results in a thrashing which shows the disparities between the haves and the have-nots! The game was reduced to a one-horse race by quarter time when Robe led by 39 points. The difficulty of maintaining concentration in such games is emphasised by Tant being able to outscore Robe in the second term with two goals to one but only be three points closer. Robe switched on again in the third term as Tant wilted. The last quarter was hardly anything to enthuse about as Robe had goal-kicking practice and failed miserably with just three of thirteen shots registering a major but they were 88 points up at the final siren and on top of the ladder.

A NEW THREE TEAM RACE AS MT BURR AND KALANGADOO FALL
by Terry Willoughby, June 30, 2019
On a day where heavy rain was a constant companion Glencoe inflicted a heavy defeat on former powerhouse team in Mt Burr. Electrical storms threatened games early in the day but M t Burr were given the shock treatment from the outset by Glencoe who led at all stages and ultimately thrashed the Mozzies by 96 points. Mt Burr had no answers as Glencoe were superior in almost every position on the ground. The Glencoe forwards in Brodie Foster with 5 goals and Alex Hentschke with 4 were too strong and midfielders in Childs, Edwards and Clay von Duve won many possessions. Glencoe powered ahead in the second quarter to lead by 42 points at halftime and Mt burr were cooked.Mt Burr are now fifth on the ladder a game behind the fourth team but form suggests a minor miracle is needed. Glencoe are locked in a three way battle at the top and were the only team to kick over a 100 points in the south east.
GLENCOE 18-20 128 THRASHED MT BURR 5.2 32
Robe also showed Kalangadoo that the pecking was changing when they easily defeated the Magpies by 34 points. Jon Agnew led the way for Robe and had willing assistants in Wehl, Wachtel, Zac Deane and Jarrett. Kalangadoo had only one goal on the board in the first half while Robe had five and a 30 point lead. Robe had their only moments of concern in the third quarter when Kalangadoo lifted and pared back the lead. Robe responded strongly in the last term and but for inaccuracy would have won by more. Kalangadoo are showing signs of wear and tear whilst Robe are eyeing of another premiership.
ROBE 9-15 69 EASILY OVER KALANGADOO 5-5 35
Hatherleigh maintained top spot on the ladder with a strong second half performance to defeat Port MacDonnell by 45 points. Port Mac challenged strongly early and the scores were level at quarter time. Wade chant and Schleter were doing well against highly rated opposition and helped put their team five points up at halftime. Hatherleigh shaken up, bounced back strongly and shut down Port Mac by adding five goals to nil and hold a 27 point lead at three quarter-time. The top side now had all the momentum as Port Mac fell away quickly and failed to kick a goal in the second half.
HATHERLEIGH 12-12 84 TOO GOOD FOR PORT MACDONNELL 5-9 39
Kongorong had a rare win but only at the expense of Nangwarry who managed to keep the margin below 50 points for the first time in years but it could be put down to weather conditions as much as anything.

TOP FOUR HAVE SOLID WINS
By Terry Willoughby – June 24, 2019
Robe started well enough against Mt Burr and led by 13 points at quarter time. Their defence was solid and restricted any forward moves that Mt Burr made and the dangerous Zac Deane was already causing some worry on the Robe forward line. The second quarter produced a flurry of goals as Mt Burr suddenly found their best form in quite a while to slam on six goals and briefly hit the lead but Robe were not to be overwhelmed as they booted five goals to lead by just seven points at the long break and suddenly it looked like a real contest. Robe, the reigning premiers, started the third quarter determined to show Mt Burr why they are now the top team as they tore through the Mt Burr defence and piled on nine goals to the Mozzies solitary one and the game was ripped from Mt Burr hands in a flash. That Mt Burr outscored Robe in the last quarter was irrelevant as the game was already done and dusted. Robe’s best were Wachtel, Wehl, Jarrett, Zac Deane with five goals and Agnew. Mt Burr’s best were much diminished after halftime but Muhovics, Stanley and Ridley stuck at their task.
ROBE 17-13 115 OVERRAN MT BURR 11-7 73
Glencoe piled on the goals from the start as they demolished Nangwarry in the same manner as all others. Foster booted 10 goals to maintain a healthy lead on the goal-kicking ladder but not much more can be said in the 196 point win.
GLENCOE 34-19 223 SMASHED NANGWARRY 4-3 27
Kalangadoo regained fourth spot on the ladder with a 103 point thrashing of Tantanoola. Tant’s season has been disastrous but Kalangadoo’s form has been unimpressive but a wins a win and the Magpies were never in danger of defeat. They started with a seven goal opening burst and that killed off any thought of a contest especially when they stretched that to beyond ten goals by halftime. McManus was named best for Kalangadoo with four goals and many others made a contribution.

Hatherleigh had a comfortable if not impressive win by 33 points over the perennial disappointing Kongorong. The margin could have been much greater but for inaccurate kicking for goal. The standard never rose to any great heights.

HATHERLEIGH OVERCOME SLOW START TO DEFEAT GLENCOE IN MSEFL
Terry Willoughby – June 17, 2019
Glencoe started brilliantly and were all over Hatherleigh like the proverbial cheap suit when they bolted to a 31 point lead by quarter time. The Hatherleigh defence was more than stretched with Glencoe winning at the stoppages and through the midfield. The pace of the game slowed a little in the second term but Glencoe continued to call the shots even though Hatherleigh plugged the scoring avenues. Kasparian in the ruck and Childs had given Glencoe a great platform to lead by 33 points at the halfway mark. Hatherleigh started the third quarter with far more purpose and an obvious ear-bashing and led by Gerard Mcgrath they stormed back into the game. Brushing aside the Glencoe opposition they piled on nine goals in a powerful surge and raced to the lead before three quarter-time. Glencoe’s earlier match-winners had been quelled and now Hatherleigh had all the momentum. Hatherleigh started the last quarter with an eight point lead and never looked like letting the game slip from their grasp even though they only managed two goals in the last quarter. Glencoe faded badly after having dominated earlier.
HATHERLEIGH 16-13 109 OVERCAME GLENCOE 12-17 89
Port MacDonnell had a comfortable 41 point win over arch-rivals Kongorong after leading from the start. The result was pretty much known by quarter time but Port Mac could have been further in front but for inaccuracy. With Jacob Langdon in top form they went further ahead in the second quarter as Kongorong could only match them in small bursts. The game was not of any great standard but Port Mac were always in control even though they couldn’t put it on the scoreboard. Damien O’Dine reached into his past to be a good player for Port Mac and booted 3 goals, Langdon, Wilke and Williams also played well. Kongorong remain firmly anchored to the bottom three on the ladder.
PORT MACDONNELL 14-19 103 EASILY DEFEATED KONGORONG 9-8 62
Robe had the task of sending more bad news Nangwarry’s way with a 248 point monstering. The Roosters allowed Nangwarry a token goal only in the last quarter. With 22 goals to nil by half-time perhaps the mercy rule should be introduced.
ROBE 39-21 255 CRUSHED NANGWARRY 1-1 7
Mt Burr, not the powerhouse of previous years battled for three quarters. to despatch a more determined Tantanoola who have been easy beats most of the season. The Mozzies led at every change but Tant with goal-kicking Robbie Versace back and booting 5 goals they made Mt Burr earn every kick. Mt Burr began the last quarter with three goal lead but quickly extended it as the Tant challenge petered out. Mt Burr’s five gaols to one blew the margin out to 40 points at the finish.

ROBE WIN ANOTHER CLOSE ONE, NANGWARRY SHOT DOWN AGAIN IN LAST CHANCE SALOON
Terry Willoughby, June 2, 2019
Robe, who seem to be making a habit of winning in nail-biting contests, did it again with a 2 point win over nearest neighbour Hatherleigh. The Roosters trailed throughout the first half where Hatherleigh had most of the play and the most effective forwards on the ground in the Wight brothers. Goals were hard to get but play opened up in the third quarter and a fired up Robe booted five to just two from Hatherleeigh to hit the front for the first time. Regular goalkicker Todd Lockwood broke free and coach Jack Kelly also hit the mark as Robe now led by just 4 points and Hatherleigh had squandered an earlier advantage. The last quarter saw the play see-saw from end to end as Hatherleigh sought to regain the lead and although they narrowly outscored Robe it wasn’t enough and they fell short by 2 points at the final siren. Dickenson, Pettit and Wehl were best for Robe and Lockwood and Kelly each booted 3 goals. Skeer, Walker and Gray headed Hatherleigh’s best and Brad Wight’s 5 goals maintained his average.
ROBE 10-12 72 SCRAPED IN, HATHERLEIGH 10-10 70
Tantanoola fired all the shots as Nangwarry’s last chance for a win this season disappeared in a blaze of goals in the first quarter, 10 in fact, and the game was as good as over. Nangwarry no doubt fancied their chances against the winless Tantanoola but it was over in a flash. Haniford booted 13 goals for Tant as they charged away to win by 155 points and eighth versus ninth on the ladder was just as lopsided as nearly every game Nangwarry have endured since 2014.
TANTANOOLA 29-17 191 SHOTDOWN NANGWARRY 5-6 36
Glencoe went on their winning way against Port MacDonnell after a close first quarter where the margin was just 6 points. From there-on Glencoe asserted their authority with Foster and Gregory finishing off the midfield dominance of the usuals in Kasparian, Clay von Duve, Cocks. Port Mac had plenty of scoring chances but tended to spray them about which made Glencoe’s game much easier. They led by 43 points at the half time break and maintained a similar margin to the finish. Newton, Ben McGregor and Stevens battled hard for Port Mac but Glencoe had a greater number of contributors.
GLENCOE 22-14 146 COMFORTABLY OVER PORT MACDONNELL 15-18 108
Kalangadoo, looking to revive their season which has been unconvincing so far, led Mt Burr for almost three quarters. of the game before succumbing in the last. Goals were hard to get as both teams defended strongly with Bannister for Kalangadoo and Ty Stanley for Mt Burr being the most prominent. The harder grounds of earlier rounds have changed to winter type surfaces and Mt Burr battled hard to reach a 5 point lead by halftime. Jones, Casey and the consistent Fatchen lifted their games for Kalangadoo who slogged away to a 12 point lead at the final change. Mt Burr, who had more scoring chances, now seized their opportunity and had much the better of play in the last to edge their way to the lead and won narrowly by 9 points. Stanley and Josh Wallis in defence were good for Mt Burr whilst Jack Gregory’s 5 goals and Ridley’s 3 were telling.

ROBE HAVE CLOSE CALL BUT BOTTOM THREE BELTED AGAIN
Terry Willoughby – May 27, 2019
On a day where weather came to play a part with strong winds and frequent showers Port MacDonnell looked set to topple last year’s premiers when they led for most of the game. Robe actually made a good start to lead by 17 points but Port Mac used the conditions better in the second quarter and raced to a 16 point margin at the long break. Players were finding the changing weather tough going and Robe battled hard to get on terms with Port Mac despite kicking to the scoring end and they still trailed by five points at the final change. Port Mac had done well to stifle the influence of the key play-makers for Robe with youngster Ned Wilke and Mark Smith doing well. Robe raised another effort in the final quarter and booted 2 vital goals to snatch the lead whilst limiting Port Mac to just six behinds. Zac Deane with four goals was best for Robe and defender Jack Sneath cut out many Port Mac forward moves.
ROBE 9-9 63 SCRAPED IN OVER PORT MACDONNELL 8-11 59
Glencoe had an easy 61 point win over lowly Kongorong but it could have been much greater. Woeful kicking for goal particularly in the second and third quarters flattered Kongorong on the scoreboard but they had the better players in Childs, Tom Edwards and Kasparian. Kongorong’s seem to be much the same week after week and Lightbody and Evans were again there. Glencoe managed to boot five goals without a miss in the final quarter which just shows the wind cannot always be blamed.
GLENCOE 15-24 114 THRASHED KONGORONG 8-5 53
Hatherleigh, riding high at the moment, had an easy 63 point win over the injury hit but equally under –performing Tantanoola. A variety of goal-kickers have been the big thing for Hatherleigh so far and this week it was Chay who bobbed up with six whilst Wight added another four to go with his bag of 11 from last round. Hatherleigh broke clear with a six goal burst in the second and were much better skilled and consistent throughout the second half whilst Tant wasted most of the few chances they had.
HATHERLEIGH 17-10 112 TOO GOOD FOR TANTANOOLA 6-13 49
It was Kalangadoo’s turn to inflict more pain on Nangwarry but this time it wasn’t so monstrous a belting. The Magpies have shown signs of age fatigue recently and Nangwarry made them work much harder than expected while battling manfully for much of the game. On-baller Andrew Stone was best for Kalangadoo ahead of McManus, Fatchen and defender Jason Bannister. Nangwarry’s best usually reside in the backline but Hicks with 3 goals made a change.

86 POINTS THE CLOSEST MARGIN, AT LEAST THE TOP 4 LOOKS DIFFERENT!
Terry Willoughby – May 20, 2019
Robe bounced back to the winners list when they ran over the top of Kongorong after an even first quarter where they trailed by one point. Switching to overdrive in the second term the Roosters raced to 45 point lead as their Kongorong opponents fell away as the goals mounted rapidly. The second half was much the same as Kongorong fell apart with only a few doing the chasing as the Robe lead extended to 70 points. The further the game went the wider the scores became as Robe brushed aside all opposition to win easily by 86 points in a canter. Wehl, Wachtel, Dickenson and Jarrett all starred for Robe and suffice to say nobody starred for Kongorong although Lightbody and Evans battled gamely.
ROBE 20-23 143 THRASHED KONGORONG 8-9 57
Mt Burr were in no mood for fun after several weeks of mediocre form which sees them outside the top four, a most unusual position for the MSE power team. They quickly exerted control over the haplsesss Nanga’s and bombarded the goals at every opportunity to lead by almost 40 points at quarter time. The pattern was the same in every quarter as the scoreboard attendants worked feverishly to keep up. Jack Gregory booted nine as Mt Burr had seventeen individual goal-kickers in the 188 point demolition. At least Nangwarry booted eight goals, their highest in a long time.
MT BURR 38-24 240 DEMOLISHED NANGWARRY 8-4 52
Port MacDonnell had an easy 88 point win over struggling Tantanoola whose season has already gone down the gurglers. The battling Tant tried to maintain touch during the first half, trailing by only 25 points. Port Mac romped away in the third term to lead by 10 goals at the last change with Newton having a great day to finish with nine goals. The Bay boys pressed on in the last quarter as Tantanoola fell apart. Newton, Schleter and Mark Smith all played well for Port Mac.
PORT MACDONNELL 18-18 126 EASILY DEFEATED TANTANOOLA 5-8 38
Kalangadoo, another MSE powerhouse team suffered a humbling 107 point defeat at the hands of Hatherleigh, a team not noted for such wins over the Magpies. Hatherleigh were switched on from the opening bounce and set up a 19 point lead by the first change. Fabris and Leek were outstanding for Hatherleigh and Wight up forward just didn’t seem able to miss anytime he had a kick for goal. Hatherleigh continued to dominate play which would have had their supporters ecstatic but apprehensive, surely Kalangadoo would fight back soon. The second half began with Hatherleigh 42 points ahead and showing no signs of stopping as Wight continued to boot goals with little opposition and the lead blew out to 70 points and Kalangadoo were powerless to stop it. Hatherleigh careered on to the finish to record their best win in many years, especially over Kalangadoo who have dealt out many thrashings, by 107 points. Fabris, Leek and Wight with 11 goals were the best for Hatherleigh. Maybe the toll of years is starting to show for Kalangadoo who managed only 4 goals for the day.

Robe had plenty of chances in the early stages but were unable to make the most of them and led by only 10 points at the first change. Glencoe looked dangerous with leading goal-kicker Brodie Foster and big Alex Hentschke already amongst the goals. Nine goals in the second term from Glencoe had Robe playing catch-up footy with Childs and Tom Edwards pushing the ball forward often for resulting goals. Robe were now in unfamiliar territory. Glencoe continued to call the tune but Robe continued to press hard but their finishing was erratic and Glencoe still held a 22 point lead at three quarter-time. Robe were still in the contest but the Glencoe forwards stepped up again when required. Foster with nine and Hentschke with six goals were too strong for a variety of opponents as Glencoe went on to win by 32 points. It was a timely reminder for Robe in their first loss for the season.
GLENCOE 21-11 137 IMPRESSIVELY DEFEATED ROBE 15-15 105
Hatherleigh stunned Mt Burr to win by 44 points in a low-scoring contest. Goals were very hard to get and Mt Burr went goal-less in the first quarter although Hatherleigh managed only one and the dour pattern was set. The second term was much the same with Sam and Josh Wallis defending grimly for Mt Burr but the Hatherleigh defence was equally as mean and Mt Burr still had only one after a dour half of football. Hatherleigh started the third quarter with 16 point lead and slowly but surely extended that with a five goal to nil last quarter from Mt Burr to win convincingly. Better players for Hatherleigh were Leek, Parish, Bateman and Rayson. Mt Burr struggled all day for good performers with only Fiebig and the Wallis brothers standing out.
HATHERLEIGH 10-11 71 TOO GOOD FOR MT BURR 3-9 27
Port MacDonnell showed their best form the season when they dominated the first half against Kalangadoo. Seven goals to three had the Magpies in deep trouble going into the second term but Port Mac rose to every challenge as Kalangadoo battled to get on terms with goals from Galpin and Gregory but it was Jeffree and Bannister in defence who closed down many forward moves from Port Mac but the lead had been reduced to five points. Port Mac now had a real challenge as Kalangadoo continued attack strongly and matched Port Mac all over the ground to level the scores at three quarter-time. Both teams traded goals in the last quarter but it was Kalangadoo’s greater depointh and experience that prevailed and they steadied at the end to win by 13 points but not without a fright. Dallas Jeffree repeated last week’s form to again be best for the Magpies, McManus, Ethan Maney and Bannister in defence repelled many attacks. Port Mac, brave in defeat were best served by Hamish Stevens, Newton with four goals, Wilke and Langdon.
KALANGADOO 14-10 94 NARROWLY OVER PORT MACDONNELL 12-9 81
Tantanoola looked set for a win after a dismal start to the season when they led Kongorong narrowly by seven points at quarter time but that was the end of the beginning for them. Kongorong, also unimpressive in 2019, took control with a six-goal burst and raced to a 24 point lead by the long break. Simkin and Phillips were lively on the forward for Kongorong who went further ahead in the second half as Tantanoola’s efforts fell away badly. The Hawks booted another five goals in the third quarter to have the in their keeping entering the last quarter. Tantanoola now face a gigantic task to win a game with only Nangwarry below them on the ladder. Kongorong at least get separation from the bottom of the ladder and that’s about all.

BIG MARGINS SIGNAL A FAMILIAR LOOK ON THE LADDER
by Terry Willoughby – May 6, 2019
Hatherleigh again inflicted a heavy loss on hapless Nangwarry and extended the losing streak further with no end in sight. The margin could have been much greater had Hatherleigh kicked straighter but 166 points gives their percentage a considerable boost. The only consolation for Nangwarry could be when they play Tantanoola who were defeated in a similar manner.
HATHERLEIGH 25-27 177 CRUSHED NANGWARRY 1-5 11
Glencoe were the other team to have monstrous win, this at the expense of a very poor Tantanoola who never looked likely. Glencoe’s key forwards Foster and Gregory had little opposition and booted nine and six goals respectively as the ball was rarely out of the forward line. The margin grew larger by the quarter and ended up a whopping 153 points. Are Glencoe’s big wins over the seriously weak ominous or should we wait until they defeat the top teams? The following weeks should tell.
GLENCOE 30-13 193 TOYED WITH TANTANOOLA 6-4 40
Kalangadoo were challenged early by Kongorong and led only narrowly by five points at quarter time but they shook off the challenge in the second term with former coach Ben Mules and Dallas Jeffree doing the damage around goal. Kongorong continued to stay in touch but couldn’t get on terms with the Magpies whose greater depointh of players saw them push ahead to lead by 21 points at the last change. Kalangadoo really put their collective feet down in the last quarter and slammed on nine goals to brush aside the Kongorong challenge to win easily in the finish by 61 points. Ben Mules with six and Jeffree with five goals were the big difference for the Magpies. Simkin booted six goals for Kongorong but they lacked the impact that the winners had.
KALANGADOO 21-13 139 EASILY DEFEATED KONGORONG 12-6 78
Port MacDonnell have been steadily improving in recent games and despite facing Mt Burr, a MSE powerhouse for many years, met every challenge head-on and were never far off the pace. Trailing by just two points at quarter-time the Demons went goal for goal during the second term and made the most of every opportunity but the Mozzies had a 12 point lead. Mt Burr maintained the lead in the third quarter and started to get away from Port Mac who continued to challenge but didn’t have the firepower to get the lead. Mt Burr steadied in the last quarter as Port Mac faded and four goals to just one saw them run out winners by 36 points. The top four has a striking resemblance to previous years with a tough winter ahead for the bottom three.

MT BURR GET ON THE WINNERS LIST AFTER ROUND THREE
Terry Willoughby – April 29, 2019
In a lack lustre game Mt Burr had a mountain of chances to boost their percentage but most of them were sprayed far and wide. Thirty-one scoring shots for only 11 goals is not a great reward and it keeps the opposition, in this case Kongorong, in the game for longer. The Mozzies were always in front with coach Thomas Renzi leading the way and speedy Dylan Ridley running the opposition ragged. Mt Burr increased their lead to 39 points at half-time and by 47 at the last change but Kongorong were continually chipping away but never really looked threatening. Jake Dowdy booted five goals for Mt Burr.
MT BURR 11-20 86 UNIMPRESSIVELY DEFEATED KONGORONG 7-11 53
Port MacDonnell, a disappointment in the first two rounds racked up their first win by crushing the hapless Nangwarry by 188 points. Unfortunately for Nangwarry who haven’t won since 2014 a win doesn’t look likely anytime soon.
PORT MACDONNELL 30-22 202 CRUSHED NANGWARRY 2-2 14
Kalangadoo conceded an early lead to arch-enemy Glencoe before hitting the front in the second quarter to lead by 13 points at the long break. Brodie Foster was the most effective forward on the ground for Glencoe but Kalangadoo had more players contributing and always seemed have Glencoe under control. The usual suspects in Childs, Cocks and Tom Edwards were doing everything for Glencoe but Kalangadoo‘s defence conceded very little with Foster playing a lone hand around goals for Glencoe. The game tightened in the final stages but Kalangadoo won by 8 points, the closest that Glencoe have been to the Magpies for many years.

GLENCOE HAVE BEST WIN IN YEARS AGAINST MT BURR
Terry Willoughby – April 14, 2019
A potent forward line and solid defence combined for Glencoe to bring down perennial finalist Mt Burr who have now suffered defeat in the first two rounds. Glencoe were on top from the outset but unable to put the score on the board with Sam and Josh Wallis working overtime in defence for Mt Burr. Key forwards Hentschke and Foster were constant threats around goal for Glencoe who steadily increased their lead to 23 points by half-time. Mt Burr were floundering as Glencoe continued to outplay them and the lead blew out to 51 points at the last change. Glencoe now had their feet collectively on Mt Burr’s throat and piled on another seven goals in the last quarter to win by 56 points. Mt Burr snagged six late goals but it was too little too late.
GLENCOE 19-15 129 UPSET MT BURR 11-7 73
Robe continued on their merry way with an impressive win over another finals rival in Kalangadoo. The Roosters began in scintillating fashion with an eight goal first quarter. Kalangadoo battled hard and booted four goals in reply but were unable to repeat the Robe fireworks when they changed ends. Scoring slowed before half-time but Robe were in command by 39 points. Kalangadoo edged a little closer in the third quarter with former coach Ben Mules providing a target up forward with five goals. Robe again took control in the final term and booted 4 goals to just two from a tired looking Kalangadoo to win by 43 points. Robe coach Jack Kelly and speedy Todd Lockwood made big contributions with five and four goals respectively.
ROBE 18-12 120 TOO GOOD FOR KALANGADOO 12-5 77
Kongorong, an under achiever for almost 30 years had a big win over Nangwarry by 129 points. The first quarter was relatively even with Nangwarry trailing by 14 points but it was all Kongorong from there-on as the piled on 22 goals to three. Simkin seven and Pannenburg six were the major goal-scorers for the winners.
KONGORONG 27-11 173 THRASHED NANGWARRY 6-8 44
Hatherleigh and Port MacDonnell looked likely to be the closest game of the round but even that became a bit one sided after quarter time. The Eagles led by just seven points at the first change but gained control in the second term without a mountain of scoring. Port Mac steadied in the thirdquarter and made more of a contest but Hatherleigh still had a healthy 24 point lead entering the last quarter. They rammed on seven goals to just two from Port Mac and ran out easy winners by 54 points. Bateman, Walker and Wight were good for Hatherleigh and Jacob Langdon battled strongly for Port Mac.

ROBE WIN AGAIN IN A TIGHT CONTEST OVER MT BURR IN MSE GRAND FINAL ENCORE
by ABC’s Terry Willoughby – April 8, 2019
The Mid South East season began almost as it finished in 2018 with reigning Premier Robe prevailing over Mt Burr by just two points. Robe had more of the play early but wasted many chances and only led by 16 points at quarter-time. Mt Burr hit back strongly with deadly accuracy in the 2nd term to hit the front close to half-time and lead by 5 points. Robe again wasted opportunities in front of goal and this played into Mt Burr’s hands. the battle continued in the third quarter and Robe again controlled most of the play at led by only 16 points at the last change with Mt Burr favoured by the scoring end. The Mozzies deadly straight kicking now proved invaluable when they went forward. making the most of every forward entry they slowly narrowed the margin with time running out. Robe were still right in it but they needed goals to make the game safe. Mt Burr managed 5 goals in 6 scoring shots but it wasn’t enough with Robe clinging on for a two point win.
ROBE 11-15 81 FELL IN, MT BURR 13-1 79
Nangwarry started the season full of hope after the disastrous loss of their clubrooms during the summer and after 5 seasons without a win if ever a team deserved a slice of luck it was this one. Glencoe however were in no mood to be generous and quickly raced to a comfortable lead by quarter time. The lead should have greater than 22 points but they really put their foot down in the second quarter when they slammed on 11 unanswered goals with Brodie Foster, ex-Penola, dominating around the goal-front where he had much help from McRae and Alex Hentschke. Glencoe held an 89 point as thesecond half began and continued to play all over the hapless Nangwarry and it was soon shades of the previous five years. The last quarter was a formality for Glencoe who dominated all facets of play with a nine goal final term to win by 171 points.
GLENCOE 32-19 211 UNCEREMONIOUSLY BELTED NANGWARRY 6-4 40
Kalangadoo, a MSE powerhouse team for more than a decade wasted no time in dispatching Tantanoola to the bottom regions of the ladder. The magpies bolted to a big early lead and never looked back. The margin was 37 points at quarter time and just grew in every quarter thereafter. Tantanoola provided little resistance as Kalangadoo brushed them aside to win by 84 points.
KALANGADOO 18-17 125 THRASHED TANTANOOLA 5-11 41
Hatherleigh the flat track bullies of recent years started the season in their usual fashion with a 93 point demolition of Kongorong who appear to be in no better shape than previous years. Hatherleigh were slow to assert themselves against the enthusiastic Hawks but battled away to a 34 point lead by half-time. They went further ahead in the third term when Kongorong were goal-less and they bombarded the goals in the last quarter when put through eight to a solitary one from the unimpressive Kongorong to win easily by 93 points.

ROBE WIN FLAG WITH LAST KICK OF THE GAME
ROBE SINK MT BURR ON THE SIREN WITH ANOTHER LAST GASP KICK
by Terry Willoughby, September 16, 2018
The South Pole gales came to the South East and made playing conditions extremely difficult. Mt Burr started well and as they did in the second semi appeared to be in complete control. The Mozzies raced to an early when they booted the first four goals of the game and Robe looked to be in deep trouble. Henry Crauford was a big winner in the ruck and around the ground for Mt Burr and this provided smaller men in Puiatti and James Wallis to drive the ball forward repeatedly. The Robe defence was in danger of being overwhelmed but fought back strongly. The Mozzies continued to pound the goal-front and led by 26 points at quarter time.
Robe had managed two valuable goals against the flow of play but when their turn with the wind arrived so did the heavy rain. The Roosters had plenty of chances but wasted most of them and only booted one goal from six scoring shots. On-baller Jon Agnew was doing everything in a bid to lift Robe but still Mt Burr led by 24 points and were looking comfortable. Defenders, Ty Stanley and Josh Wallis were doing a great job for Mt Burr and Robe found goals hard to get.
Robe started to get some momentum in the third quarter but Mt Burr still seemed to have the game under control as the wind started to change to more across the ground. Cory Gamble was having an influence for the Mozzies but Jack Sneath was on top at full back for Robe as they got three goals for the term against two from Mt Burr. Mt Burr had led for three quarters and still appeared to be the better team with a lead of 17 points.
Any wind advantage seemed to have gone as the last quarter began, Agnew was still winning kicks at the stoppages for Robe and Craig Pitt also but Mt Burr was strong in defence through Stanley and Josh Wallis. At the other end Sneath and Riley Dickinson cut out the Mt Burr forwards and play was stuck between half-back lines with many ball-ups and throw-ins. Slowly Robe cut into Mt Burr’s lead but the clock was running down. Robe had nearly every player behind centre in a bid to clog the Mt Burr forward line but couldn’t break clear to get the play forward themselves. Mt Burr lost a player to the blood rule and play was held up momentarily but Robe found a way forward from the congestion and got the ball to Craig Pitt who found himself alone in the forward 50m with only seconds remaining, his kick crossed the goal-line to put the Roosters in front for the first and only time as the siren sounded to give Robe a three point win and devastate Mt Burr who failed to score in the final quarter. It was the second time in the finals that Mt Burr had been defeated on the siren. It was the icing on the cake for Craig Pitt who recently returned from a broken jaw.
Best for Robe were the tireless Jon Agnew around the stoppages and mid-field, Craig Pitt, unheralded youngster Jack Sneath and Riley Dickinson in defence, Jake Pitt at half-forward and Jordan Pettit on the wing. For the disconsolate Mt Burr, Cory Gamble, on-baller Chris Puiatti, ruckman Henry Crauford and defenders Ty Stanley, Josh Wallis.
