KAROONDA STARTS WITH A WIN, AS DO LAMEROO & PINNAROO
The Mallee season got underway on Anzac Day with the Karoonda favoured to defeat Peake after some strong off season recruiting. Peake had lost one of their better players in Matt Seyers to Imperials in the River Murray League in the off season, but they came out strong scoring the first three goals of the game and led by 13 points at quarter time. The Magpies got going in the second term adding 4.1 to 2.1, but still trailed at half time. In tough conditions due to the welcome rains, it was a battle to score and the homeside managed to add 2.2 to 1.2 in the third term to go into the last break with a 3 point lead. In the end the Magpies proved too strong in the final term to run out 34 point winners with new recruits Sean Barrett and Justin Jackson (2 goals) in the best players, with veteran Luke Hocking kicking three goals. For the Lions, James Hewett and Todd Hillam played well with James Fiegert kicking three.
At Pinnaroo, the rain had done plenty of good but a little bad as the boundary lines washed away prior to the first bounce. Pinnaroo had the use of the wind in the first term and added 3-4 to 1-1 to lead at quarter time. Murrayville had their turn with the breeze and in while adding 3-1, the Suparoos grabbed two goals into the breeze to main a narrow nine point lead at half time. Neither team scored a goal in the third term, but in the final term Murrayville kicked the first goal to bring the margin to within a kick. Pinnaroo then kicked away adding the next couple to give them the nine point victory. Pinnaroo’s Wade and Ryan Nickolls were their best while for Murrayville Rian Crane and Damien Fenoughty were their best.
At Coonalpyn, the Grand Final re-match saw Lameroo too good for BDT running out winners by 22 points. Lameroo breaking the game open in the second term where they added 4.2 to 2.1. Ruckman Ben Greiger and Mark Benham were named best for the Hawks while for the Crows, last years Mail Medalist Josh Richardson played well as did James Sampson.
This week, BDT host Pinnaroo at Tintinara, Murrayville meets Karoonda and Lameroo travels to Peake.
