ROUND FOUR – Sunday April 30, 2005 Famous win for Ports (from Sean Holden of The Transcontinental who saw the match)
It is very tempting to use the well-worn cliché “It was an old fashioned arm-wrestle” to describe the clash of the Bulldogs but I wont…even though it was. Rather I will describe the Port victory over South Augusta as famous. That is, the galloping greens came to Central Oval to play the team that has played in the past two grand finals with a team that had beaten the 2005 Premiers in West Augusta the week before.
The game was tough, uncompromising, fast-paced and at times bad-tempered. South went into the game without three talls in Crombie, Di Paolo and Smith leaving the ruck work to Gilbert Taylor and Mark Reid against the well-credentialed Michael Burford. The ex-WAFL ruckman won every centre bounce tap feeding the hungry midfielders as Port won much of the clearances out of the middle. If it weren’t for the hard-working backline of South the advantage of first use of the ball would have buried Kernahan’s charges well before the last quarter.
The first quarter was very entertaining and play accentuated with contested possessions all over the ground as Kevin Harris kicked the first score of the match, a goal. Almost immediately Vance Remphrey replied as Mc Namara and Magor kept the Port boys in the contest rebounding out of defence as Harris pumped the ball in towards Brown and Reid in the South forward line. Impressive was utility Coombe and it took until five minutes to go before early Madigan Medal fancy Chad Parrish got going on a wing. With Ricky Johnson slotting a major on the siren South lead by four points at the first break.
The first ten minutes of the second quarter saw Michael Reid extend South’s lead only to watch as Parrish and then Bergsma goaled and Port got within two minors. Then Amos, Lee and Struck goaled as the ball moved quickly end to end. The peripheral vision of Harris and his foot skills were underscored in a neat passage of play involving a pass to Struck who found Brown to score six more points with ten minutes to play. Youngster Darren Shillabeer was the veritable “unregistered dog” as he seemed to be everywhere with no obvious owner, Christian Reid and Matt Grantham both were “fighting above their weight” in defence against taller/bigger opponents. However, Port full forward Mudge was just beginning to shake Grantham in this quarter and goaled. Rugged Ben Lee helped to have Port within two points at half time.
The third stanza started and finished in a rough and ready fashion and was interspersed with scuffles and pushing and shoving as the ball was more often than not in dispute with five or six players looking to resolve the issue. At the risk of boring the reader and “banging on” about the lack of reporting it is apparently okay to multiple punch someone whilst they are on the ground and it seems that “square-ups” are permitted and whilst it is a football truism that the player who retaliates always gets pinged whilst the thrower of the first punch never seems to be reported “two wrongs don’t make a right” (there and I thought I would get through without an obvious cliché!). Suffice to say no reports were made! From the fifteen-minute mark it became increasingly obvious that the Port players wanted the ball and the win more. In particular Port’s Fleming, after kicking a goal from the free kick and fifty-metre penalty he received for an infringement by Digance, was excellent. The standard dropped as both teams seemed to be looking forward to ending hostilities and starting again for the last quarter with the scores tied.
Port had the comforting knowledge that they would finish the game with the breeze but it was South who took the early advantage as Digance found Shillabeer with a magnificent one step forty metre pass across the fifty metre arc and full points were gained. The dogged Magor had Brown’s measure and at the other end Mudge was gaining the upper hand over Matt Grantham goaling after four minutes to level the scores once again. A focussed Fleming led the charge of the green and white brigade as Port steam-rolled through centre time after time as Mudge, Coombe, Lee and Bergsma starred. For South, Shillabeer, Heron and Amos tried desperately to right the sinking ship. In one passage of play Amos gathered the ball backward of centre ran through a pack of ‘dogs and remarkably bounced the ball as he sidestepped and ran around an opponent put in ten quick metres to deliver into the forward line only for it to be rebounded out. With five minutes to go and nine points down Abrahamson had the chance a to pinch a goal and possibly set up a win as he worked magnificently along the wing, cut inside and had a leading Brown to hit only to miss-kick and find the only defender, Mc Namara within coo-ee on the chest. When youngster Paterson goaled with only minutes to play it was game over. Port coach Donny De Palma was ecstatic and celebrated as if he had won the flag and fair enough his charges had just one a magnificent finals like game and further enhanced their growing reputation as last quarter “game-closers”.

ROUND FIVE PREVIEWS – Saturday May 6 2:20pm Central Oval
South Augusta (3rd) v Solomontown (5th) This is an absolute must win for the Bulldogs after an agonising last quarter loss to Port last week confidence needs to be restored. The Cats were unceremoniously thrashed by the Bloods in Pirie and have more than pride to play for. Their season is going to hinge on victories over sides like South, West and Wolves. The Bullies need bigs in Crombie, Di Paolo and Smith to return to add height and grunt and help undersized Matt Grantham, Brusnahan and Heritage in defence and Taylor in ruck. And if Jones can get back and add much needed spark out of the centre Conroy Street will be much the happier.
Tip: South 25-30 points.
2:20pm Memorial Oval: Lions (7th) V West Augusta (4th) Looming as another demoralising defeat for the Lions as the Hawks will atone for the fourth quarter fade out against Port two weeks ago. Westies have had a week off to fine tune and re-focus. The Lions must surely play man-on-man, field a lot of runners and attack on the rebound. At the risk of being disrespectful to the Blue & Gold’s’, I shudder to think how many Hayden Warren will kick against them and if Gary Hull returns to the paddock look out!
Tip: West 50-60 points.
Sunday May 7 Central Oval Central Augusta (1st) V Port Pirie Bulldogs (2nd) – Potentially a blockbuster! The Bloods are undefeated and are fresh from hammering the Cats in Pirie last week, whilst Port outlasted South in an epic at Central Oval. As meritorious as Port’s win against the Red and Whites was it is difficult to see how they will beat Centrals. The midfield duels will be a purist’s dream with the low centre of gravity thickset body types of Luteria, Adams, Lee, and Fleming versus the more lithe Blaschek, Keatley and Pannach. The importance of Sawford will be even more obvious as he is the one Centrals midfielder that is difficult to budge over the ball. Increasingly impressive is Centre Half Forward Anthony Ruffles and would almost be firming in the Madigan Medal stakes perhaps with Chad Parrish. The now expected strong finishing last quarters of Port will hold them in good stead but will not be enough to claim the points.
Tip: Centrals 20-35 points.
